Granny Stripe Blanket

My granny stripe blanket had been on the hook since January 2015, the yarn was a Christmas gift in 2013 and I was anxious to get it crocheted up into something as I'd been dithering the past year over what it should become. It came as an Attic24 granny stripe blanket pack, though I was thinking of using it for another design, however, in the end I did indeed begin making a granny stripe blanket.

Skip forward a few years and by the middle of 2019 there hadn't been very much work put into it and I did consider taking it to the charity shop for someone else to finish before I reconsidered and decided to finish it off myself. Yes, it's still taken me a long time to do that but I've finally got there.

I have to say that this isn't my favourite blanket, it isn't the most enjoyable blanket I've crocheted and the end product isn't my favourite either. I think it's the colours, it's just too colourful for me. There's seventeen colours all together and it's all too much, they jar.

It's quite a big blanket measuring 75inches X 55inches and it will get used, I think it might be nice for picnics or a beach rug, the happy colours would work well in that setting, it's just a little too big for a sofa blanket.

It's made from Stylecraft Special DK yarn and there's quite a bit left over. I'm thinking of adding this to the other Stylecraft Special DK I've got and crocheting up some lap blankets or doggy blankets for charity. It's good to have a bit of mindless knitting or crochet to work on when I'm watching TV.

  1. I think it is fabulous, Jo and I love all the colours. (However, I do appreciate that not everyone loves mixed colours like I do). I am sure the charity blankets will be really popular. Have you heard about Twiddle Muffs for people with dementia? Perhaps your local hospital/care home would like some of those too?
    Best wishes

  2. Well done for persevering. It must feel really satisfying to have it finished even if it’s not going to be a favourite piece.
I like Stylecraft Special DK, my Mum crocheted a bobble blanket for Bub and it’s lovely and soft.

  3. It looks great, Jo. I love colour but, like you, this seems too colourful somehow. 17 colours? Wow! Is your next blankie already under way?

  4. I love the colours on your blanket, but I have made loads of them, so the colours sing to me. I love Stylecraft special, I do only use 4ply, the yarn works well and it great in the laundry. I made a scrappy blanket last year which I use on my floor when the babies are here. Your hard work has created at lovely addition to your home.

  6. Beautiful work! I still have the final scalloped edge to crochet on my daughter and son-in-law's wedding afghan. They got married August 14th! I'm determined to finish it this weekend ;)

  7. I think your blanket is lovely, it's bright and cheerful but if you don't like it I'm sure a charity for the homeless or refugees would be happy to take it and someone would benefit from it's warmth and lovely mix of colours. xx

    1. It's far too colourful for Eleanor. Since she bought her house she's become a bit of a colour snob, haha.

  12. Well done Jo & it's an accomplishment that you decided to finish it & maybe use as a picnic rug. It is colourful, but still quite pretty, not in your face bright or with some fleuro colour jarring it. Enjoy, take care & hugs.

  13. It does looks fabulous. All that colour! But I know what you mean, it could feel a little overwhelming in the house. I always keep a couple of blankets in my car, just in case - picnics, chilly legs, getting soaked on a walk :) X

  14. Congratulations on completing your project in spite of all your misgivings. I actually quite like the bright colours and would be lovely like Jules suggested for the car. We always keep a blanket in the car 'just in case'!
