Under The Weather

I've had the lurgy, in fact, I've still got the lurgy. It's not often I'm ill, which is just as well as I make a bad patient when I am, but this time, I've had it well and good.

I started at the beginning of last week with a really sore chest and it developed into a dry cough, I coughed so much that I was physically sick. It's not a cold, I haven't had a runny nose, but my whole body has ached and I've had a high temperature.

It wouldn't be so bad if my dad wasn't in hospital. We took him to A&E on the Sunday night before I was ill as he had chest pains and he was having trouble breathing, his ankles were also very swollen. They hooked him up to a heart monitor, took blood to test and did a chest x-ray and they discovered that his kidneys weren't working as they should. My dad's got prostate cancer and he knew that he'd lost the function of one kidney completely and was down to 27% function in the other kidney. They wanted to keep him in hospital but he refused point blank so they allowed him home, but on the Monday he received a phone call from the urology specialist asking him to go in and see him on Tuesday. It was the first day I was feeling off it so Mick took him to the appointment. He was told that the function of his one remaining working kidney is now down to 16% and that they needed to drain it. He wasn't impressed that he had to stay in hospital but Mick eventually talked him round and he's been in there ever since.

I didn't think it was a good idea being in close proximity to my dad, or anyone else in hospital, when I'm obviously carrying germs around so Mick's been doing all the toing and froing whilst my dad's been in hospital, not that I felt able to get there anyway. I don't know what I'd do without him.

Mick also had a big interview last week and has just earned himself a big promotion. He's worked for his company since leaving school thirty six years ago and has worked his way up through the ranks so his promotion is very well deserved. He's now responsible for all his company's UK factories. We haven't celebrated yet but I'm sure we'll do so as soon as I feel up to it.

I've still got a really bad cough but I'm feeling a lot better in myself than I have done over the last ten days so I'm hoping that it doesn't last much longer. I'm also hoping that my dad gets sorted out soon and is allowed home. It never rains but it pours!

  1. the bugs this year are horrible, Hubby has a simular bug and was ill for 3 weeks. I am trying to keep bug free, we will have a new baby in 3 weeks so I don't want to have to stay away .

    1. There seems to be so much going around this year, perhaps that's why I've succumbed this time round. It's the shaking it off which is the problem, as your hubby knows, three weeks is a long time to have it hanging around. You must definitely keep bug free, just think of all those baby cuddles you'll miss out on otherwise.

  2. I hope you feel better soon Jo, all this damp rainy weather's not helping, we need some frost to kill off the germs! Touch wood I don't get coughs and colds very often, good job as I can't take over the counter cures, I have to rely on ginger tea, hot lemon and extra doses of vitamin C. I hope you dad is able to come home soon, it's an extra worry. Congrats to Mick on his promotion.

    1. I don't often get coughs and colds either but I seem to get them tenfold when I do. Yes, it's a worry my dad being in hospital when I can't get there to see him myself, he's been a bit up and down over the last week or so but I'm hoping he'll soon be on the mend. Thank you, I'll pass on your congratulations to Mick.

  3. Ooh, sorry you're not well. I hope your dad's condition improves as well. Not an easy time for you. The rain is definitely metaphorical as well as literal in your neck of the woods.

    1. Yes, the title of my post can be taken in two different ways at the moment, we've more rain forecast today. We've missed the flooding here but Mick was in South Yorkshire last week and passed some terrible scenes, my heart goes out to all those who have been affected.

  4. Chesty coughs do seem to hang around for ages don't they? Hope it goes soon and you're feeling better. It's always a worry when elderly parents are in hospital - I always worry that my Mum will catch something even worse in hospital! Congratulations to your husband. We're sick of the rain down here too, it feels neverending. We rarely seem to get colds or coughs anymore (probably will now I've said it!).

    1. Coughs can be such niggly things as they take so long to go. I've always found that my parents are worse when they're in hospital, I think most people feel better when they're in their own house. We've had more bad weather today, winter is definitely here.

  5. You are in the stage when you have grown children to worry about and also parents, its very challenging to say the least. I remember when I was there trying to do it all. Just remember that 'Everything Passes' and things will be okay again. Hope you continue to feel better, Hugs.

  7. Glad to hear you are feeling a little better, horrible when you feel so rough and it just lingers on. I double up on the zinc supplement when something is pending, which does seem to help. So sorry to hear your Dad´s unwell too, hope things improve very soon, but a lovely comfort for you that Mick was able to give his support. Congrats to Mick, unusual to hear someone has been with the same company for so long so it´s great to hear his hard work has gained him such a huge promotion. xcx

    1. I feel as though this illness has been ongoing for such a long time, it wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't worrying so much about my dad. There aren't many people who stay with one employer for such a long time these days, it's good that his loyalty and hard work has been rewarded.

    1. I think it's probably been a flu bug or some type of chest infection. I'm sure it will pass in time but I definitely shan't go passing it on to my dad or other patients in hospital. Thank you, I'm very proud of Mick getting his promotion.

  12. I m so sorry you have all this going on, but thrilled for your husbands promotion! Get well and know that I'm praying for your dad. My father was in congestive heart failure last week with poorly working kidneys. It seems they are so closely intertwined. Hope you can see him soon

    1. It's so very worrying as our parents age and become unwell, there have been lots of hospital stays over the last few years for both my mum and dad but it's extra worrying when I can't get there myself. I hope your dad is soon on the mend.
