Opinions Please

I've been knitting a little more on my Beach Days wrap and have now got to the point where I start knitting the centre colour block.

What I can't decide is whether to follow the pattern or omit this centre panel of blue and gold waves and just continue with the design I've followed so far, blue wave, eyelet band, gold wave, eyelet band, and so on. The centre panel looks something similar to the blue and gold waves that I've already knit at the end of the wrap and I'm not sure I like that block in the centre.

What do you think? Would you follow the pattern or would you miss out that centre block? Help me decide please.

  1. I agree with you. The solid colour block might look a little heavy. I think the wavy pattern you've followed so far looks very nice with the blue and gold acting as a border.

    1. I really like the pattern but I'm just not sure about that block in the middle, I'm not sure why really but now you say it might look heavy I think that may be it.

  2. Personally I'd go with the blue and gold wave at either end and continue with the 3 colour pattern in the middle :)

  3. I would prefer it without the centre block. Are you doing the blue/gold waves at both ends?

    1. The blue/gold waves will be at both ends. I really like the pattern as it is at the moment, I'm really not sure about the centre block.

  4. Tricky! I quite like it without the block but I suppose if the wrap is long, the block would break up the lighter section. How are you going to wear it? Where would the block end up when you put it on? There, I haven't been very helpful at all, have I!

    1. The wrap isn't going to be really long, though I suppose it will block longer once it's finished. If I do miss out the centre block I will knit some extra waves and eyelet bands so there will be a reasonable expanse, but I hadn't thought about where the block would fall when I wear it. I suppose it's something I'd have to consider each time I wore it, which is another negative to including it really.

  5. I can see why you're unsure what to do. The blue band is gorgeous and I love how it looks at the end of the wrap, although I think I'd be tempted to leave it from the centre. X

    1. That's my way of thinking too at the moment.

  6. Hi, Jo. Your shawl's looking wonderful! I'd leave out the centre band if it was me. I like a simple and unfussy design, but I think it'd look fabulous either way. Best, Jane x

    1. I like the colour blocks on the ends but I think it looks a bit too fussy, as you say, in the middle. I'm definitely edging towards leaving it out.

  7. Dear Jo
I am no crocheter or knitter, but to me, it looks like that section should be at each end like a border, rather than in the middle.

    1. I feel that way too. I think the blocks look good at the end but I'm not so keen on it in the middle.

  8. If it were me I would carry on and just finish up with a corresponding end to the one you have. I can just feel how snuggly this will be on a windy beach.

    1. I think that's what I will probably do, especially since so many people feel the same way as I do about it. I love the yarn I'm using, it will be very snuggly indeed.

  9. When you first said you were knitting this pattern and I looked at it on Ravelry, I thought that if I made it I would omit the centre section. Personally I think it will make it more consistent, and give more attention to the ends.

    1. It's such a big section in the middle, it doesn't feel balanced in some way, I think that's what's putting me off. I do like the section at the ends, just not in the middle of the wrap.

  10. Please don't pay attention to me.... Because I don't knit, so have no idea, what this "should" look like, when done.

But since you asked, I'd like to leave out the deeper blue and gold.

But... Take the advice of knitters!

Or...... Just do it, as you want to!!!! That is always the best way, me'thinks. -smile-

    1. You're definitely on the same wavelength as the knitters who have offered their advice. I definitely think it will look better without the colour block in the middle.

  11. It's beautiful and will be so comfy to wear. Lots of opinions, I'm not sure I would like the colour block in the middle either, but then again I like symmetry in things.

    1. It would still be symmetrical as there's colour blocks at each end and one in the middle, I'm just not sure it's to my taste having the heavy colour in the middle of the wrap. Perhaps smaller mixed bands of waves would look better spread across the wrap, just not all in one block in the middle.

  12. I too think it would look odd with the section in the middle, it looks lovely at the ends. I would go with what feels right for you, you dont always need a reason! Hope you are feeling a little better now.

    1. I don't often deviate from patterns and I think this is why I'm a bit hesitant to go my own way and leave the colour block section out. I haven't had one comment yet saying they'd leave it in though so there's plenty of people who have the same opinion as I do. Thank you, I'm feeling a little better now so I'm sure I'm on the mend.

  13. Go with your instinct. I think it'll look nicer with the colour block at either end.

  15. I think I like it either way, but I wouldn't knit the solid band if you are uncertain. Are there any others on Ravelry who have left out the solid band?

    1. I haven't seen any on Ravelry who have left out the band but there are those with the band which I'm not keen on. I suppose that answers my own question really.

  16. Dilemma, but like others, I really like it the way you have done it, you want to wear it in a carefree way, not worry about the big block. Must say it is looking really good xcx

    1. I'm really pleased with how it's looking, that's why I'm unsure about mixing it up and including the colour block. I think I've made up my mind now that I'm going to leave it out.

  17. I'd leave out the center block, it does look odd sitting there.xxx

    1. I think there's just too much colour in that one block, it doesn't seem to add anything to the wrap. I think it'll look much better without.

  18. I think you should go with your gut feeling on this. I think either way it would look beautiful and once it is made, you will never worry which way you had created it. Does that make sense?

    1. It does make sense. I think once something's finished it's just there and that's the way it is, you don't start wondering if a thing would have looked better if it had been complete in another way.

  19. I'm a little late to this post … so you've probably decided and I'm sure it will look good :)
