Mick had taken a week off work before my mum died, I wrote about the things we got up to in my Holiday Week post and I mentioned that we'd had lunch out on the Tuesday of that week and that I'd tell you all about it in a separate post.
Each month, the houses in our area receive a free booklet which contains advertisements from various tradesmen and businesses as well as regular features. There's also regular competitions and I'm pleased to say that I've finally one won of these, namely, a two course meal for two with a bottle of wine at a local pub and restaurant, The Three Horseshoes.
We've often passed this establishment and oohed and aahed at the dozens of hanging baskets outside, it really is a sight to behold during summer. It's been recognised with many Britain in Bloom, Leeds in Bloom and Pubs in Bloom awards. We've never actually been inside though, until the Tuesday when Mick was on holiday when we went to cash in our prize.
It's a traditional pub with good old fashioned hospitality and there's an extensive menu. It was quite challenging to come up with a final choice but in the end we both opted for steak and ale pie with chips, Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. Mick's plate is in the foreground, he's not a lover of veg and usually leaves them whenever we eat out, though he's not quite so bad at home.
The portion sizes are huge, I couldn't manage all my meal and when it came to dessert we decided to share chocolate fudge cake and ice cream. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was a double portion, there's two slices of fudge cake and three scoops of ice cream, but this was actually for one. I'm so pleased we'd decided to share.
It was lunch time so we didn't indulge in the wine, instead we were given a sealed bottle to take home with us.
Although we didn't pay on this occasion, I did glance at the prices and they're very reasonable. We enjoyed it so much that we'll definitely return.
Sounds a nice place to eat, a bit far for us to travel.
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoyed our meal. Yes, a bit far for you to travel but you never know, if you're ever in the area!
DeleteHow lovely to win a meal out. Your pudding looks very yummy and the pub looks good. It's so nice when you find a good pub especially if it's local. We're fortunate as our local is exceptionally good and friendly. We have both the bookclub and the knit & natter group meetings there. The bookclub (monthly) have a meal together and the Knit & Natter have a meal about 4 times a yr. Some eat there each week too but mostly we have a drink and a cookie whilst we knit/crochet & natter. Cx
ReplyDeleteIt was a lovely treat having such a scrumptious meal and not having to pay for it. How lovely to have a local pub where you can hold social meetings, I wish there was something like that here.
DeleteWhat a lovely prize. The food looks lovely but I always find the huge portions very off putting so usually go to places where they offer a ‘lighter’ meal option. I’m impressed that they gave you the wine to take home instead of insisting you drank it on the premises.
ReplyDeleteI often enjoy a lighter meal too, especially when I'm eating through the day. I was surprised that they gave us the wine to take home, we were quite happy just having the meal without drinks included but they insisted, which was very nice of them.
DeleteLovely to go somewhere different and what a bonus that it was a prize. After such generous portions, no wonder you could only share dessert, thats huge for one person. Hopefully you will pop back again sometime xcx
ReplyDeleteWe've often passed this pub but I doubt we'd have ever gone inside if we hadn't won this prize, we'll definitely return though, the food was really good, and plentiful!
DeleteWhat a lovely prize. And yes that pudding, although scrumptious looking, is an enormous portion for one, it's no wonder there's an obesity problem. How lovely of them to give you the bottle of wine to take home.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, the pudding was absolutely delicious, but plenty enough for the two of us to share. We don't often have more than one course when we go out, it's usually enough for us, but I'd probably share a portion of this again, yum yum.
DeleteWhat a fun place to eat! It looks like good hearty, filling food. That dessert is amazing seeing as it is only one portion! Good thing you shared, for sure!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Thursday- xo Diana
The menu was extensive and all full of good, home cooked food. Neither of us would have managed that dessert to ourselves, it's definitely a good job we shared.
DeleteHow nice to win a prize like that and enjoy a good meal in a pub/restaurant that you haven't visited before, but would return to. The food looks delicious with generous portions. It sounds as if the staff were helpful too.
ReplyDeleteI was thrilled to win this prize. We had a wonderful experience with delicious food and friendly staff.
DeleteLucky you, that all looks and sounds delicious. xx
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe I'd won the competition when I got the phone call, it was all fabulous.
DeleteWe really enjoyed it and will be going back for more.
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely to have a meal out and really enjoy it. we do eat out on the odd occasion, usually when we go into Ceredigion.
ReplyDeleteWe enjoy meals out. We're not ones to go and spend nights out in a pub drinking but it's nice to eat out once in a while.
DeleteI love a good hearty pub meal, nice that you won it.
ReplyDeleteI was thrilled to win a prize and even more so when I found out which prize I'd won. It was a real treat.
DeleteWe pass this pub frequently too. The floral displays are always beautiful. We’ve never eaten there though. It’s rather expensive isn’t It?
ReplyDeleteThose hanging baskets must take some looking after, there's just so many of them but they certainly make an impact. I looked at the prices on the menu and they were very reasonable.
DeleteCongratulations on your win. What a lovely treat and that fudge cake looks delicious! - I wouldn't have shared 😆
ReplyDeleteThe fudge cake was delicious and if I hadn't stuffed myself full of steak and ale pie I wouldn't have shared either.
DeleteCongratulations on your win, what a nice thing for the community to have something through the door like that.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good looking pudding!
It's a nice little mag full of useful information and interesting articles. It was one of the best fudge cakes I've ever tasted.
DeleteWhat a lovely prize to win and how lovely of them to give you a bottle of wine to take home! I love fish and chips, but I'm not a big eater and I hate to waste food, so I order a child's meal. Best, Jane x
ReplyDeleteThey have a wide variety of meals on the menu and there's the option with some of them to have a smaller portion, which I think is great for people with a smaller appetite.
DeleteLovely Jo & the meal looked delicious. I'm the opposite to Mick & love my veg best. DH & I also share sweet eats these days & occasionally a full meal, though we very, very rarely eat out, except on our travels, which is usually just quick takeaway type food. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI love veg too. We eat out quite regularly these days, our little treat to ourselves, but it was lovely to win a meal and not have to pay on this occasion.
DeleteWhat a great win! The meal looks amazing...and huge!! It's always nice when you find somewhere good to eat and even better when you don't have to pay for it :)
ReplyDeleteIt was certainly a hearty portion. I agree, it's always nice to be treated to a meal.
DeleteI'm sure it tasted even better because you won it as a prize. Great fun and very tasty by the look of it.
ReplyDeleteIt was very tasty indeed, I think we made a good choice from everything on offer. There was so many different things on the menu.
DeleteWhat a lovely win.
ReplyDeleteThe food looks and sounds very nice indeed.
All the best Jan
It was a fantastic prize, we had a delicious meal and really enjoyed ourselves.
DeleteLooks like a wonderful lunch, how cool you won it. Congrats. The portion do look huge. Think hubby and I might share a meal there.

DeleteIt's always great to win something like that. Love the name os the pub. That dessert is enormous!xxx
ReplyDeleteIt was a great prize for us as we enjoy eating out. The dessert was huge, we'd have never managed one each even if we weren't already full from our main course.
