I was bought a ready planted bulb as a gift. I've never grown an Amaryllis before, so it was a bit of a surprise when I saw the bulb, I wondered how such a large flower would grow from such an insignificant thing. I actually wondered if there was life in it, but it started to show a bit of green soon after I started watering it.

The leaves grew first. I started thinking that I was going to have nothing but leaves, but eventually, the flower stalk started growing. Buds emerged, and it wasn't long before they opened to show these magnificent flowers, two of them.

Apparently, it can be quite hard to get an Amaryllis bulb to flower for a second time, but I'll give it a go, and I shall be putting a new one on my Christmas list just in case I don't manage it.
They are beautiful flowers and I love the colour. Never grown one myself. Wonder why they don't flower a second time!?
ReplyDeleteThe colour is stunning, really brightening up my living room on such a dull day. Perhaps the bulb puts so much energy in to producing that flower that it runs out of steam. I'm going to give it a go to try and get another bloom from it though.

ReplyDeleteI'll give you a tip. Wait until after Christmas, I saw loads in the shops and they were reduced to half price. It's a gorgeous flower, I'm wondering how long it will last.

DeleteYour amaryllis looks fab, Jo. We gave my mum one for Christmas 2011 and she tried to grow it again last year but it only grew leaves - no flowers. Good luck with yours. :o)
ReplyDeleteIt will be a bit of a challenge getting it to flower again, but I'll give it a go. They make great inexpensive presents, I've enjoyed growing mine and watching all the stages.

DeleteI've never been able to grow one the second year - kept a few but in the end had to chuck them away. Yours has grown well. I had a similar one earlier this year and that flowered well too but after it flowered I threw it away! Good luck with trying to keep it going next year!

I'll give it a go again next year, but if I don't succeed, I won't bother again. I've heard so many people say that they couldn't get a second flower out of it. They must use up their energy producing one spectacular flower.
