The North Wind Doth Blow...

...And we shall have snow, And what will poor robin do then, poor thing?

Well, we didn't have the wind, but we certainly had snow yesterday. It fell thick and fast, and look who was visiting the garden.

I love my little feathered friends and try to keep them well fed so that they visit me often. I see a much wider variety of birds in the garden now than I used to, I think they realise that there's always a meal available here.

A pair of collared doves were perched in the lilac tree nearly all day just watching the snow fall, and I had many different birds coming and going, I'd have thought they'd got more sense than to venture out in the snow.

The snow was quite thick by yesterday afternoon, but I'm pleased to say that it's all gone again now. It didn't last long at all this time.

  1. Your variety of Robin is wonderful and its lovely red breast is so vibrant against the snow.
    Enjoy the day!

    1. This robin, which is a frequent visitor, has a lovely rounded breast. I had one that visited a couple of years ago and he was very thin and quite bedraggled. They're such friendly little birds.

    1. I've only seen a wren in my garden once, they're not very common here at all. The snow's all melted now, I'm so glad, I hate it when it goes all mushy, or else it turns to ice.

    1. I could sit and watch the birds from the window for hours, I find them so entertaining. It's good for them to have a regular food source, but it's in my interest to keep the feeders topped up too so that they keep visiting.

  4. I'm always amazed at how quickly and heavily it falls, then how quickly it goes the next day! I had a hairy journey back from visiting a friend in Sheffield yesterday, and almost get stuck on a hill 200 yards from home. Next year - winter tyres!!

Lovely robin photos, I do love robins, especially in the snow.

    1. I was really surprised yesterday, it was quite a covering in so little time. I can imagine you almost getting stuck, I was skidding and slipping up our little cul-de-sac, I really don't like driving in the snow. Photos of robins in the snow always remind me of Christmas.

    1. Thank you. It's a lovely hobby, watching the birds, especially when it's too cold to be out there with them.

  6. We have a couple of robins that visit. Yesterday one was waiting nearby while the other finished at the feeder. It's surprising as they are known to be very territorial. Last year we had one who we named Ragged Robin because it looked a bit tatty. We have a much wider variety of birds here than we did at the old house. I think it's because we are surrounded by hedges and trees rather than fences, and the fact that like you, J keeps the feeders well stocked!

    1. Yes, they are usually territorial. I feel sorry for the tatty ones, rounded robins are so much cuter. There's definitely more birds around when there's hedges and trees, though the neighbourhood cats tend to climb mine and scare the birds away sometimes.

  7. I've been enjoying my birds at home, especially the pair of robins.
The birds have to venture out as they need to keep finding, and eating, food. Flighty xx

    1. Robins must be high on the list of people's favourite birds. The collared doves weren't looking for food, they were content to perch in the lilac tree for much of the day. I hope they didn't get too cold.

  8. The snow seems to be really hanging on this year. I hope that you haven;t had too much disruption with the high winds and rain too. Jx

    1. If I remember right, we had snow in April last year, so we may not have seen the back of it yet. It's been quite a nice day today, I hope we get a good weekend too.

    1. I'm glad the snow didn't hang around. We've got a bit of sunshine here today, it's been a while since I last saw the sun so it's very welcome.

    1. I didn't think it was possible that the amount of snow we had could thaw so quickly, I'm very glad it did though. There's a robin at the allotment who perches on our spade handle and watches what we're doing. So cute.

    1. Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment. It's so nice to see a bit of bright sky at last, it seems so long ago that the sun last shone. I hope it keeps it up for the weekend.

    1. We've had a lovely sunny weekend here, but it's going to take more than that to dry everywhere out, it's just so wet. No chance of digging over my allotment.

  15. We've been missed out of the snow distribution this winter - very strange to see the rest of the country deluged and Edinburgh in a snow-free zone!
