No Pancakes Here Today

Today is Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day. We're not huge pancake lovers, but I would usually make some as an after school snack and then have a late tea. I've got all the ingredients at the ready, I even bought a Jif lemon, something I usually forget, as we like our pancakes with lemon and sugar.

Unfortunately, Eleanor is at her drama group tonight, so we can't have a late tea, which means no after school snacking. Instead, I've made lasagne ready for tea, and we'll have our pancakes for breakfast at the weekend.

We always used to make pancakes for supper when Daniel and Eleanor had friends staying for sleepovers when they were younger. I used to let them flip the pancake, something that some of them had never tried before, and they though it was great fun. I used to make sure we had plenty of different toppings, even though we always have lemon and sugar. I remember one of Daniel's friends having Golden Syrup on hers, I can't think of anything more sickly.

  1. I think I'd choose lasagna over pancakes, though chocolate pancakes for pudding would be nice :)

    1. I'm with you on lasagne over pancakes. I'm not a lover of sweet pancakes, and I'll be full up after the lasagne, so I'll pass on chocolate pancakes.

  2. I'd forgotten that it was Pancake Day! I'm afraid that I was a huge fan of Golden Syrup when I was little. We even had it on bread for breakfast. Jx

    1. I find Golden Syrup extremely sweet, which is surprising really as I have a sweet tooth. I'd never think of eating it on bread.

  3. Hope to making some later today! It has to be sugar and lemon for me too!

  4. Could just eat one of your lasagnes right now mmmm. Pancakes will be made when I finish this cup of tea. Assortment of toppings here. Lemon juice, chocolate spread, golden syrup, babanas and squirty cream. Chocolate spread, nana & cream seem to be a favourite with the girls. I like syrup and lemon but shall be good this year and have none. Got a few pounds to lose that recently snuck on oops x

    1. That's quite an assortment of toppings, everyone's well catered for there. I need to get back on my healthy eating too, though we've got a few celebrations coming up so I'm waiting until after those.

  5. I eat them but I'm not really fussed so I don't bother doing them. When I do have them a squeeze of lemon and sprinkling of sugar is my choice of topping.

    1. I'm exactly the same, take them or leave them. Good choice of topping too.

  6. I don't make them - I can't stand the smell. When I was working in school one of the TAs took the children to the staff room to make them - the smell was overpowering and I felt nauseous for much of the day.

    1. It's awful if you can't stand the smell of something. Don't you like Yorkshire Puddings either? It's the same batter.

    2. I love Yorkshire puddings but don't eat them now because of the eggs. I think it is the sickly smell of pancakes frying that I don't like- I don't like fried food of any description, and always grilled bacon, sausages etc when we ate meat.

    3. I forgot about the eggs. We're huge Yorkshire Pudding lovers in our house, they go with any meat here. I can understand the frying issue, it doesn't smell very nice, I agree.

    1. The lime pancakes must have been a little tart, don't know if I fancy that. It's great to hear what other people have on their pancakes. Lasagne was delicious.

  9. Lemon and sugar... I've never heard of that. I'll have to give it a try.
We devour ours with good old Canadian maple syrup which I am proud to say we are the biggest producers of in the world. Must be because of all the glorious sugar maples and a frigid Winter!
    Enjoy them...

    1. Lemon and sugar is a common topping here, try it, it's delicious. I'm sure we'd all be having ours with maple syrup if we had it on tap like you do. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I've never tried maple syrup, I wonder if we can get it over here.

  10. I've never heard of pancake day. Where does it come from? My favorite is called a banana fritter which is basically a fresh banana inside a pancake.

    1. The idea behind Pancake Day being on Shrove Tuesday, is that all the fatty foods in the house are used up before Lent, the period of fasting, the following day. I've never tried a banana inside a pancake, that's a new one on me.

  11. Hi Jo, we had some with freshly squeezed orange juice and sugar as is tradition in our house.Yummy they were too even if they did stick to the pan and end up a bit of a mess!

    1. I've never tried them with orange juice, I must remember that. They always stick to the pan when Mick makes them, Eleanor always asks that I make them now.

    Yes please!!
I'm sorry you got no pancakes, but you either love them or you don't and it seems you don't so... it's all good right? Oh and I've never heard of lemon on pancakes!! I'd give it a go though!

    1. I can take them or leave them, but I'll definitely make some for breakfast at the weekend seeing as we didn't have them on the proper day. Don't forget the sprinkling of sugar if you try them with lemon.

  14. Sugar and lemon on the English ones, maple syrup on the fat American style ones. Although my kids like nutella on theirs and I have to admit it's tasty. But golden syrup - no, too sweet!

    1. I don't eat the fat ones, they're a bit stodgy for me, though I can take or leave the English ones too, I'm not a huge lover of them.

    1. I'd promised pancakes this weekend but we've just been so busy that we haven't got round to it. It's half term this week though, so we should have plenty of time on our hands to have them more than once, if so required.
