I've had an amaryllis bought for me for Christmas for quite a number of years now, they're always ones which come from the supermarket, already planted up and waiting to grow. All I have to do is add water and watch the magic happen. In the past they've done so well, usually producing two flower stems, last year I was thoroughly spoilt with three.
I can't say I'm particularly enamoured by this year's offering though. I'm not over keen on the red flower adorned with a white star and a lime-green throat, nor has it produced more than one flower stem. This variety is called Minerva but it isn't a patch (in my opinion) on Queen Of The Night which I had last year which I thought was stunning.
It's still been enjoyable to grow though. It's an inexpensive gift which I get an enormous amount of pleasure from and I shall be putting an amaryllis at the top of this year's Christmas list again.
I actually like your Minerva, but having looked back at your Queen of the Night, it does rather pale into insignificance! I've never had an amaryllis before, perhaps I'll get one for next winter.

ReplyDeleteI love them but can't have them in the house because they are poisonous to cats. All of the lily family are the same, shame as I would like one.

I like the colours, but I do love red blooms on my amaryllis, I only had one bulb flower this year, I just can't get a second flower ever.

Mine didn't do too well this year either. I tend to go for the pink and white ones, but your red one is pretty i think

ReplyDeleteThe markings on the amaryllis are very pretty. The amaryllis I have called Dancing Queen has begun to produce new growth. I'm looking forward to it producing flowers once more. It's a gift that's given a lot of pleasure.

ReplyDeleteOkay, after looking at last year's flower, I agree that I prefer the deep, rich color of last year's, but this year's is pretty too, just in a different way. The shape of the flower is just gorgeous, and I love how easy it is to spot the star shape in this year's! :)
