Houseplants

Although I've spent years growing many different things outdoors, I've never really gone in for houseplants. I've had various orchids over the years, at present I'm down to one which Mick's auntie and uncle bought me for my 50th birthday, but as for other houseplants, they just haven't rocked my boat. Things are changing though.

Over the last year or two I've picked up a couple of Christmas cactus and a money plant, but just recently these little plants keep jumping into my basket when I'm doing my shopping. The one at the front was bought from Tesco, it had a yellow sticker on it and was reduced to just a pound. It was a little droopy but it soon picked up when I gave it a drink of water. The other two were bought from Lidl for £1.99 each. Aren't they cute?

I remember having spider plants when I was a child, they're easy to grow so it shouldn't give me too many problems. I have no idea what the other two plants are though. Fingers crossed I manage to keep them alive.

  1. I have house plants, loads in my sunny office, and a few shade lovers in our sitting room. I am a plant adict, hubby is supporting me, but he does insist I keep numbers down inside.

  2. I would love house plants but I know to my cost that with 5 cats they gets shredded, lol
There's nothing better than buying a poorly plant and reviving it is there?

  3. Oh, well done, they look very healthy and happy. No house plants here I am afraid - too much horticulture outside!

  5. I love house plants but never could grow them well until lately for some reason! I prefer succulents though because they are just too easy!

  6. Good for you. I only keep a few houseplants on the windowsill, which I showed in a recent post, including a spider plant. I hope to grow one or two others from seed this year along with a couple of dwarf tomato plants. xx

  7. I used to have a spider plant, that a friend gave me. But all in all, I do not do well with plants.

Or maybe, I just never really tried. -smile-

Best of luck with your new "friends."

And isn't it amazing, how just a drink of water, can revive growing things?!?

  9. My houseplant collection is slowly increasing too. It doesn't help that my Pilea keeps having babies. At the moment they are all fighting for space on the kitchen windowsill, as at this time of year it's the sunniest area of the house. X

  10. Your plants look lovely. I have a few indoor plants but not many. Our house doesn't get good sunlight for plants.

  11. If you have one spider plant be prepared to eventually have a forest of them as they are prolific baby producers

  12. well, One looks like oxalis to me. I just can't be bothered with the special water here. Our water is hard and we use salt to soften i t. SO nothing from the taps can be used. I can use outside taps in the summer, but they would freeze here in winter. I enjoy everyone elses plants. Oh, I do overwinter Zach's ponytail plants that are about 5 years old now. They do best ignored all winter under a sky light. I used to feel a lot o pressure to keep them alive, but We have a little agreement I guess, those plants and me! And they are in a room the cats cannot access. Or.....someone would chew on them!

  13. Lovely Jo & the funny thing is, that I used to have houseplants when the kids were growing up, but stopped about 12 years or so ago and like you, have just bought some at the end of last year & a couple on Thursday last week. I'll pop a photo through in an email that I owe you. Take care.

  14. There seems to be a bit of a renaissance of house plants generally. Like you I have one or two orchids that flower sporadically. I have started to amass a very small collection of succulents in the kitchen and pride of place is given to a juvenile String of Pearls plant. I saw one on someone’s blog and thought it looked interesting. It is now hung in a macramé pot. Very Seventies.

  15. I've never had any luck at keeping houseplants alive :( Houseplants are considered beneficial as air purifiers and mood boosters; although seeing the poor things die at my incompetent hands does little to boost my mood :( I have quite a few artificial plants though. Your little plants look beautiful and I hope they thrive for you. Best, Jane x

  16. I've only got a couple of houseplants now, I did have a huge spider plant but it developped little black flies so i got rid of it. Plants seem to do well in my house until i notice them and then they take a turn for the worse, lol Your's look very healthy

  18. I used to have loads of house plants before I had children, one by one they have died and we are now down to two. One of those was given to me by my brothesr for my 19th birthday which makes it pretty old now, it has survived a lot of moving around and is now about two foot tall. It seems to thrive on neglect! I hope your plants thrive, I read or heard somewhere recently that you don't really need to water house plants much during the winter.

  19. They are lovely and a bargain to boot! I don't have many house plants these days. I always forget to water the poor things. I just bought some cacti seeds, I've never grown them before.xxx
