In The Making - November 2019

A roundup of the things I'm working on at the moment.

I'm pleased to say that crafting is firmly back on the agenda at the moment. My mojo has been coming and going since my mum died back in March, which I suppose is to be expected as my grieving navigates its twists and turns, but it's nice when I'm at a period where I'm getting enjoyment from the things I usually do. I've even completed a project this month, my Strictly Cha Cha Chevron Socks 2019 are off the needles.

I've been working on my Winters Frost socks. I usually knit my socks using double pointed needles but I'm beginning to enjoy using the magic loop method which I'm giving a go on these socks. The pattern is a pleasure to knit and I love the colour of this yarn. I'm knitting the heel flap of the second sock at the moment so these socks may be finished soon.

I asked for Opinions Please on my Beach Days wrap. Thank you to everyone who left a comment. I wasn't sure whether to follow the pattern and include the centre wave panel on the wrap or omit this, I didn't know if it added anything to the wrap or not. I think most people who commented on my post said that they'd leave out the centre panel so this is what I'm going to do. I shall add some extra blue and gold waves and eyelet bands instead but I need to work out how much yarn I have in order to do this first.

Only a couple of projects which I'm actively working on at the moment but it's nice to be focusing my efforts and seeing some progress. I'm hoping for another finish before my next monthly roundup.

  2. I'm glad your crafting mojo is coming back. I find a bit of crochet works wonders when my anxiety is bad. Crafting has a soothing way of distracting our thoughts for a little while. I love the colour of your new socks. Best, Jane x

  3. I love the colour of your socks. I have tried the magic loop method and couldn't get on with it but glad you have been able to make it work for you. I am also glad that you have been able to make a decision about your wrap, it is so hard to know what to do when the pattern doesn't quite do it for you isn't it. I hope you have enough yarn and are happy with the results.

Having been away from blogland for a while I had not realised that you Mum had died this year, I cannot begin to imagine how hard that is and how hard this year must be for you. I hope that you are slowly moving forward in your life without her, thinking of you x

    1. I've tried magic loop in the past and though I'm okay with it for sleeves and hats, it's been a different matter with socks. I don't know why but it's been a different story this time, I'm getting on with it really well. I'm glad to have made a decision about the wrap, I just need to do some weighing of yarn and work out how many different sections I'm able to add and then I can crack on with it. It's been a very difficult year with my mum dying in March. My dad isn't in the best of health either so we've had the added worry on top, but it's the firsts of everything without my mum which is the hardest. It was her birthday a couple of weeks ago and we've still got Christmas to get through without her. It's all very sad.

  6. So pleased you've got your crafting head back on. I know how it feel to be in the wilderness, I often go there and always think I won't get back but of course always do. Bereavement is't easy either but actually craftin always helps me when I'm down.
I have never made socks on a circular needle, must have a go at it some time.

    1. I've had large spells of time this year when I just haven't been able to concentrate on anything, which isn't really conducive to crafting, but I'm feeling quite good at the moment so I'm making the most of it whilst I can. The thing with bereavement is that it just hits you and there's nothing you can do about it when it does, so I'm just going with the flow. I think there are pros and cons to knitting socks on a circular needle, as there are to double pointed needles, I think it's just a case of preference really.

  7. Lovely to read you are getting enjoyment from crafting again Jo. Winter Frost socks are nice yarn, and also that must mean you are feeling much better too. Someone kindly shared their cold germs with me so i'm nursing the tissue box today. I've never tried the magic loop method.

    1. There's so many bugs doing the rounds at the moment. I've still got a bad chest two weeks on, and I can't sleep for coughing, but I'm beginning to feel much better now. I've given magic loop a go in the past but haven't got on with it for socks before now. Hope you're feeling better soon.

  8. Its nice to hear your getting your mojo back slowly but surely Jo. Its not easy to get yourself out of that slump and really its still early days for you since you lost your mum. I can't believe it will be 30 years next year since my mum passed away it only seems like it happened 5 years ago.

    1. How sad to have lost your mum so long ago. Once of the things I'm thankful for is that my mum had a long life, she was 84 when she died, and that gives me some comfort. It's very sad when people die young. My crafting mojo has come and gone this year, I expect it still will for some time to come.

  9. So wonderful that you are again enjoying knitting. Yes it is. No one is obligated to put one's life on hold, after someone dies. I'm so happy that yours, now has a beloved occupation, in it, again.

    Gentle hugs...

    1. It's a bit of a relief when I feel the urge to do some crafting again as it usually means I'm getting a bit of a let up from the grief. I think we're all different when someone dies, we all feel differently and we all act differently, there's no right or wrong way. I've allowed myself the time I've needed, and I'm still just going with the flow, it's much easier than trying to fight it.

  12. Love the colour of the sock yarn and the wrap will be pretty whatever you chose to do. Glad you are starting to enjoy your knitting again. My daughters boyfriend has just lost his dad and he is not coping very well at all at the moment, it's still early days for him but that in turn is having an effect on Stevie, she is worried about feeling happy about anything in front of him, which is not good. I keep telling her she needs to get him to talk about things, but men are not always good at that are they. I'm sure your mum would be happy that you are getting your knitting mojo back. xx

    1. The sock yarn is lovely to work with, not a colour I've used before so it's different from the norm. I'm sorry to hear about Stevie's boyfriend's dad, he must have been a young age. It is hard for men to talk about their feelings, but it's also hard to lose someone at a young age too. I think bottling things up leads to problems later on down the line, but it's easier said than done to get someone to open up if they don't feel able. I do hope things get a little easier for him soon.

    1. It certainly does have its ups and downs, it's no wonder that our creative mojo comes and goes whilst we're grieving. I'm pleased to be at a place where I'm enjoying working on my projects again.
