The Three Horseshoes

Mick had taken a week off work before my mum died, I wrote about the things we got up to in my Holiday Week post and I mentioned that we'd had lunch out on the Tuesday of that week and that I'd tell you all about it in a separate post.

Each month, the houses in our area receive a free booklet which contains advertisements from various tradesmen and businesses as well as regular features. There's also regular competitions and I'm pleased to say that I've finally one won of these, namely, a two course meal for two with a bottle of wine at a local pub and restaurant, The Three Horseshoes.

We've often passed this establishment and oohed and aahed at the dozens of hanging baskets outside, it really is a sight to behold during summer. It's been recognised with many Britain in Bloom, Leeds in Bloom and Pubs in Bloom awards. We've never actually been inside though, until the Tuesday when Mick was on holiday when we went to cash in our prize.

It's a traditional pub with good old fashioned hospitality and there's an extensive menu. It was quite challenging to come up with a final choice but in the end we both opted for steak and ale pie with chips, Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. Mick's plate is in the foreground, he's not a lover of veg and usually leaves them whenever we eat out, though he's not quite so bad at home.

The portion sizes are huge, I couldn't manage all my meal and when it came to dessert we decided to share chocolate fudge cake and ice cream. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was a double portion, there's two slices of fudge cake and three scoops of ice cream, but this was actually for one. I'm so pleased we'd decided to share.

It was lunch time so we didn't indulge in the wine, instead we were given a sealed bottle to take home with us.

Although we didn't pay on this occasion, I did glance at the prices and they're very reasonable. We enjoyed it so much that we'll definitely return.

  1. Sounds a nice place to eat, a bit far for us to travel.

  2. How lovely to win a meal out. Your pudding looks very yummy and the pub looks good. It's so nice when you find a good pub especially if it's local. We're fortunate as our local is exceptionally good and friendly. We have both the bookclub and the knit & natter group meetings there. The bookclub (monthly) have a meal together and the Knit & Natter have a meal about 4 times a yr. Some eat there each week too but mostly we have a drink and a cookie whilst we knit/crochet & natter. 1. It was a lovely treat having such a scrumptious meal and not having to pay for it. How lovely to have a local pub where you can hold social meetings, I wish there was something like that here.

  3. What a lovely prize. The food looks lovely but I always find the huge portions very off putting so usually go to places where they offer a ‘lighter’ meal option. I’m impressed that they gave you the wine to take home instead of insisting you drank it on the premises.

    1. I often enjoy a lighter meal too, especially when I'm eating through the day. I was surprised that they gave us the wine to take home, we were quite happy just having the meal without drinks included but they insisted, which was very nice of them.

    1. We've often passed this pub but I doubt we'd have ever gone inside if we hadn't won this prize, we'll definitely return though, the food was really good, and plentiful!

  5. What a lovely prize. And yes that pudding, although scrumptious looking, is an enormous portion for one, it's no wonder there's an obesity problem. How lovely of them to give you the bottle of wine to take home.

    1. I have to say, the pudding was absolutely delicious, but plenty enough for the two of us to share. We don't often have more than one course when we go out, it's usually enough for us, but I'd probably share a portion of this again, yum yum.

    1. The menu was extensive and all full of good, home cooked food. Neither of us would have managed that dessert to ourselves, it's definitely a good job we shared.

  12. We pass this pub frequently too. The floral displays are always beautiful. We’ve never eaten there though. It’s rather expensive isn’t It?

    1. They have a wide variety of meals on the menu and there's the option with some of them to have a smaller portion, which I think is great for people with a smaller appetite.

  16. Lovely Jo & the meal looked delicious. I'm the opposite to Mick & love my veg best. DH & I also share sweet eats these days & occasionally a full meal, though we very, very rarely eat out, except on our travels, which is usually just quick takeaway type food. Take care.
