What does 28p buy you nowadays? Not a lot, does it. That's why I was pleased to find lots of veg available for this price when I visited Morrisons today.
A bag of onions, a bag of carrots, a head of broccoli and a swede all at 28p each. There were bags of potatoes at this price too but I didn't bother with those as I always buy mine from my local greengrocer unless I'm harvesting my own.
Another few things to note from my shopping today, melon, Magnums and cavolo nero.
The melon had been reduced from £1.08 to 35p, worth having. The magnums are a box of eight which cost £3, a box of four usually costs this price. It's not something I eat myself but I know Eleanor's boyfriend is particularly fond of them so it's handy to have some in the freezer. Cavolo nero is one of our favourite veggies, I'm very keen on dark leafy vegetables. Not all supermarkets sell it but Morrisons do so I usually pick some up when I visit. It's very easy to grow too. I thought I'd mention this as Jan over at The Low Carb Diabetic blog wrote a post about it recently in which she asks Cavolo nero have you discovered it yet? It's worth reading if you haven't already, it tells you all about this delicious vegetable.
Daniel and his girlfriend arrived home from university yesterday to spend Easter here, they're staying until Tuesday. It's wonderful spending some treasured family time together. They've popped in to Leeds to do a bit of shopping this afternoon so I thought I'd grab the chance to write this post and also to wish everyone a very happy, peaceful and fun Easter weekend, I hope you're able to spend it with your loved ones.
Happy Easter to you all.ReplyDelete
28p is a great price for all those veggies. We don't have a Morrisons anywhere near us which is a shame as I need carrots and broccoli for our roast tomorrow!
Thank you. I really like Morrisons but it's a bit of a car ride away so we don't shop there all the time. We don't often have a roast dinner on a Sunday, we usually have roasts in the week, but we're having one tomorrow with it being Easter Sunday. Beef and Turkey is on the menu.Delete
Happy Easter Jo.ReplyDelete
Well, you did find some good bargains? I looked up Magnums but couldn't find out what they were - is it ice cream? I'll have to pop over to read that post on Cavolo Nero - that's one kale variety that hasn't found it's way into my garden...yet. Have a wonderful Easter weekend with your family, Jo!ReplyDelete
A magnum is an ice cream on a stick which is covered in Belgian chocolate. I don't mind ice cream occasionally but I don't eat lots of it, these were too good an offer to pass up though, they will definitely get eaten. We're big fans of cavolo nero, that and Savoy are are kale/cabbage of choice. Thank you.Delete
Happy Easter to you Jo, we are having a family roast tomorrow with creamy rice puddingReplyDelete
Thank you. I've never been a fan of milk puddings since I was put off them at school but I know lots of people love rice pudding, and the creamier the better. Enjoy! Have a lovely day.Delete
Wow, you got so great deals, Jo. I have never had cavolo nero, but it looks a little like Chinese cabbage to me. I often buy produce from the discounted section, sometimes it's very good. My in-laws buy tons of bananas this way, and freeze them to make healthy "ice cream" in the blender with other frozen fruits like berries. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Easter.ReplyDelete
Cavolo nero is a type of kale, it's a veg we all enjoy so we eat it quite often. I always look at the reduced counter when I'm doing my shopping, there's often things I can pick up from there to save me a bit of money. Thank you.Delete
Happy Easter. Did the carrots taste of carrots?ReplyDelete
Thank you. We haven't eaten the carrots yet but they're bound for a casserole later in the week so I'm sure they'll be fine, not as good as home grown though.Delete
A Very Happy Easter to you and yours.ReplyDelete
Happy Easter Jo. Going to find out about the cabbage it sounds intriguing. I buy the mini magnums' during the summer its just enough for us. The veg wars between supermarkets is very interesting. Each one I trying to headline with 4-5 types each week. Good for the consumer but I fear for the farmer!ReplyDelete
Thank you. We really enjoy cavolo nero, I'd urge everyone to give it a try. I'm not a huge fan of ice cream so I think the mini Magnums would be just the right size for me too though I've never bought them that size before. There's always a down side to food wars, isn't there. I buy most of my vegetables from my local greengrocer but I couldn't resist these when I saw the price, not good for farmers as you say, and not good for local businesses either.Delete
You've got plenty of good bargains to enjoy.ReplyDelete
Thanks, and you too. Flighty x
I always love a bargain. Thank you.Delete
I stocked up on the veg again, not sure when the offer ends, enjoy your time with Daniel, Happy Easter xxReplyDelete
It's such a good offer, isn't it. It's lovely having Daniel home for a while, we don't get to see him very often these days so I'm making the most of his company. Thank you.Delete
Wishing you and yours a wonderful Easter. We are expecting my eldest daughter/husband and two boys, one been the new baby for lunch tomorrow. I am so excited so will be pushing the boat out with a roast and all her favourite sides and puddings.ReplyDelete
Thank you. I love spending time with family, it's turkey and beef for us today with all the trimmings. Enjoy your day.Delete
Happy Easter to you and yours, Jo. That is a good price for the veg. We're fans of dark green veg too and often have carrots and swede cooked and mashed up together instead of mashed potatoes.ReplyDelete
Thank you. I think there was some kind of cabbage in the offer too, it's good to get something at such a good price. I love my veggies, I always make sure I do a good selection when I'm making a roast dinner.Delete
Happy Easter to you too. What a bargain 28p each well done. You must be feeling quite chuffed with all your goodies. I love dark leafy veggies too, especially spinach, raw, steamed, or just in smoothies, not heard of cavolo nero, will go and have a look. Enjoy your family time xcxReplyDelete
Thank you. I'm always pleased when I get a bargain. I love spinach too but we don't have it very often because the rest of the family aren't keen. It's lovely having all the family home for Easter.Delete
Amazing bargains!!!! Even if I double that to get Ozzie dollars, we'd never find anything to go near it. I often buy 'The Odd Bunch' vegies in one of our big supermarkets at a good price, but that's about all. We sometimes pick up meat marked down, though I've been buying from a small village butcher who belongs to our car club and he does the best sausages. Have a happy easter, enjoy family time and take care.ReplyDelete
I was really surprised that they were selling these veggies so cheap. I'm a big fan of smaller, local shops and I think the quality of their produce is much better than supermarkets too. I use my local greengrocer regularly and there's a few butchers I use too. Thank you, it's lovely having Daniel home for a while.Delete
Great bargains, Jo. Have a good weekend with all your family! :o)ReplyDelete
I'm very pleased with my bargains. We'e had a lovely weekend so far and the sun's even shining today.Delete
Have a wonderful Easter weekend with your family. Enjoy every moment of your visit.ReplyDelete
Thank you. It's lovely having Daniel home to celebrate Easter with us, I'm making the most of every moment.Delete
Jo, many thanks for the link you gave me, and the low carb diabetic blog. So good to see your purchase of cavolo nero here, it is something I must buy soon!ReplyDelete
I think all of the supermarkets are getting price conscious when it comes to vegetables, I am finding some good buys too ... and I just love using fresh vegetables when you can. Although I've nothing against frozen or tinned!
Great to have the family around especially at Easter ... enjoy all the time together - special moments.
Hope the new week ahead will be a good one for you.
Happy Easter to you, and all your family.
All the best Jan
You're welcome. I must admit that I rarely use frozen or tinned veg, the exception being peas but as the family turn their noses up at them, it's something we don't have very often. It's been lovely having Daniel home for Easter, we've got another full house today with Eleanor's boyfriend joining us. Thank you.Delete
Happy Easter Jo. We are a full house this bank holiday weekend, with family and relations all together. Pity about the weather.ReplyDelete
Thank you. It's lovely having the family round, isn't it. I must admit that the weather hasn't been too bad here, certainly not as bad as was forecast. We've had some rain of course but there's been lots of sunny intervals too.Delete
Hi, Jo! Hope your Easter was a happy one....filled with family.ReplyDelete
It certainly was. We've had such a lovely weekend.Delete
A very happy Easter to you and your family. It's not often that veg is reduced is it, all the offers seem to be on the processed foods so I love it when you find a bargain, looks like you did really well!ReplyDelete
Thank you. That's very true, it's good that something healthy is reduced for a change.Delete
What a bargain! Glad you had a good Easter.xxxReplyDelete
They were good bargains, I'm always on the lookout for them.Delete
