I'm back to reading my Gervase Phinn books. There's five in the Dales series, of which I'd read the first three. I had found the fifth one in a charity shop but couldn't find the fourth book, Up and Down in the Dales, for love nor money. I found one on Ebay, and though it was a little more expensive than I would have paid for it in a charity shop, I decided to buy it.
I'm nearly at the end now and it's been another good read. I'm pleased that I've still got the fifth book to go at.
Another book I've recently read is The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I really enjoyed this book, and it did keep me wanting to read more, though I have to say that not a lot happened in it. I usually read in bed before I go to sleep, so I enjoy books which are light reading and this is one of them. I lent the book to my mum and she enjoyed it too.
It's not long until we go away on holiday now, and I usually take a few books with me. It's one of the things I really enjoy about my holiday, having time to sit and read. I've got quite a few magazines stacked up which I bought when they've been on offer, but I haven't got round to reading them yet, so this year might be the year when I catch up with those on holiday rather than reading lots of books, we'll have to see.
I shall have to have a look out for them, like you I enjoy reading in bed & quite often go early just to relax & do that. Have you read any of the Miss Read series? I enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of the Miss Read series, I shall look it up. I like to relax in bed with a bit of light reading before I go to sleep. Reading makes me really tired though and I often can't get through a chapter.
DeleteThat happened to me last year and it took me ages to get a copy of the missing book. Like you I tend to read a 'light' book in bed.
ReplyDeleteGoodness nearly holiday time again, I bet that you're looking forward to it. Flighty xx
I've been waiting on this fourth book for some time now, so I was pleased to finally get my hands on it. I can't wait till we go away, I'm really looking forward to it.
DeleteI read the secret lives of bees a few years ago and did really enjoy it. I've never read a Gervase Phinn book, but have heard very good things about them. It's nice to have a pile to look forward to reading :) xx
ReplyDeleteI like reading a series, it's good to have the next book lined up ready to read. I really like Gervase Phinn, though The Yorkshire Dales is my very favourite place, so I enjoy reading about the area.
DeleteI like Gervais Phinn books too, they make you laugh out loud dont they?
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great holiday and that you get chance to read plenty of your books!
I do laugh out loud when I'm reading Gervase Phinn books. I'd love to hear him speak, apparently he's a very good after dinner speaker. Another few weeks until we go away yet, though I'm looking forward to it already.
DeleteA similar series has been written by Jack Sheffield so when you've finished Gervase Phinn you might like his books set in a school based on his experiences. I've hear him speak at a literary festival.
ReplyDeleteThe Miss Read series is one of my favourites, too and I've passed them on to my daughter who works in a small infant school. I'm looking forward to a holiday break, too.
Thank you for the suggestion, it's good to get recommendations. I'm so looking forward to a break away, rest and relaxation is just what I need.
DeleteI've heard "The secret life of bees" is good... I'll have to read it!
ReplyDeleteHave a great time on holiday! Where are you off to?
Tammy xx
We're going to Cornwall for a fortnight, I'm so looking forward to it. We're staying at a place we've stayed at twice before, so we know we like it there.
DeleteMy daughter bought me a Gervaise Phinn book and I loved it, so will have to see if I can get some more. I've also seen him on The Dales Diary and that was interesting. I came across series 2007 and 2008 on the internet and bought them and love them too much, but can"t access any more, and I also know the series finished in 2008 after 17 years. Hope you get lots of reading done in the holidays.
ReplyDeleteMight look out for those authors in the comment above, as I also like light reading these days.
I've never seen The Dales Diary, though by the title, it sounds as though it would be something I'd like. There's a series on tv at the moment called The Dales, it follows various people and their lives living in The Yorkshire Dales. I tune in to that every week.
DeleteI've enjoyed collecting the Jacquline Whinspear "Maisie Dobbs" series recently. Given that they are murder mysteries, they are remarkable gentle and a really nice read. This sounds a rather odd combination - but it works! Jx
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of that series, I shall look it up. I need a nice easy read before I go to sleep, I often drift off whilst reading.
DeleteI've never read any Gervaise Phinn, I must try his books some day. I love to choose my holiday reading, it's a lot more fun than the packing! x
ReplyDeleteI love the connection to the Dales in his stories. I like choosing holiday reading too, and crochet or knitting projects to take with me.
DeleteI have seen the Dales books but not read any of them. Its nice to have a holiday to look forward to a change from the norm. :)
ReplyDeleteI've really enjoyed the the Dales books, I'm on the last one in the series now, I'll be sad when I finish it.
DeleteWe read the Bees in our book club the other year, everyone liked it. I saw on The Hen House blog the other week that Penny has seen the film too and she liked that just as much as the book.
ReplyDeleteLisa x
I shall look out for the film as I'd like to see it. I prefer to read a book before seeing a film though, rather than the other way round.
