M&S Hyacinths

I'll admit, I succumbed to these gorgeous hyacinths because I'd seen so many photos on blogs and Instagram of spring bulbs in these lovely tin pots. I'd read that they'd been designed by Emma Bridgewater, though I'm not sure how true this is as they weren't marketed so, there's nothing on the label to indicate this, but I was drawn to them nevertheless.

I'm a sucker for hyacinths, they've got such a strong scent and I love it, though Mick seems to have an aversion to any flowers with any sort of fragrance. I'd rather have Mother Nature's natural air freshener rather than an artificial one any day.

Isn't this design lovely, bees and polka dots. Of course, the pot can be reused once the hyacinths have finished blooming.

And here they are a week or so later, flowering in all their glory, or nearly so. The second one is yet to open out properly and the third bulb, shown in the first photo at the front of the pot never grew at all, it must be a dud. Never mind, the scent is intoxicating and making the house smell sweet.

There's so many gorgeous flowers about at this time of year.

  1. Years ago in my teens (yes I can remember), I saw bulbs in Woolworths and decided to get some for my mum as a gift, she loved her garden. Even before I left the store I had a huge allergic reaction to the bulbs, it was horrible, took me years to get to like them again. These days the bulbs have been altered to stop the allergic reactions. I don't have any this year, but previous year bulbs are in my raised bed by back door, and are shooting nicely.

  2. As far as I know Emma Bridgewater does do commissions for shops so it is likely she designed the pot and they are rather nice. Any flowers at the moment are welcome for a bit of colour and the scent is a bonus

  3. They're lovely, I too love hyacinths, both the look and the smell. However, husband hates the smell!

  4. I love the smell too. I planted 4 together and only 2 have come up, which is a shame. They were the shorter variety and really are short!

  5. Yes the design is beautiful it's a lovely pot. I love hyacinths although I do find the scent a bit overpowering in the house I have pots of them just outside my conservatory door and you get a lovely waft of scent as you step outside. xx

  6. I'd buy that just for the pot (I'm just Not Good at gardening) and so the beautiful flowers would be a bonus!

  10. Lovely Jo & I must go & get some bulbs before winter & fuel prices are out of reach to get to a good bulb nursery up in the hills near Melbourne. Take care & hugs.

  11. I usually get hyacinth bulbs from a garden centre in the Autumn and grow them for Christmas, but for the last two years that hasn't happened and I miss this seasonal tradition and of course the sight of them on the window sill and the strong fragrance. What pretty pots yours are in!

  18. I really like the pot, I would have chosen that myself. My husband is the same and doesn't like strong floral scents. The hyacinths are beautiful.
