Temple Newsam Rhododendrons

We've been making the most of these warmer days and once Mick gets in from work we've been taking ourselves and Archie off for a nice walk most evenings before we have our tea. Lotherton is a regular haunt but late afternoon on Wednesday we decided to venture to Temple Newsam instead to see the rhododendrons.

I wrote a post about Temple Newsam Rhododendron Walk back in 2012 but I thought you might like to see the flowers again.

It's a stunning sight to see them all in bloom.

There's so much colour about at the moment, even the trees zing at this time of year with their new growth.

The grass in front of the lake looks parched but everywhere else is so green with the odd rhododendron giving a splash of colour on the other side of the water.

There's sometimes donkeys in this field but none on this visit. There's a mass of clover and buttercups though.

It's raining today, I doubt the plants will be complaining as the ground has been so dry that we've been having to water. It's supposed to be nice over the weekend again but in true bank holiday style we're due rain on Monday. If you happen to be in the area I can definitely recommend a visit to Temple Newsam, I think the rhododendrons will be blooming for a few weeks yet but best not to leave it too long.

  1. The Rhododendrons look stunning, we have lilac one, planted by the previous owners, but I do like the white ones.
We have rain here this morning too, the garden needed it though. Luckily I cut the grass and tidied up yesterday afternoon :-) Have a good weekend.

    1. I've never grown rhododendrons but they put on such a super display. We always have a trip to Temple Newsam to see their collection at this time of year. The rain hasn't let up all day, Mick cut our grass last night, just in the nick of time, though I'm sure it'll need cutting again after all this rain.

    1. I grew up more or less over the road from Temple Newsam, it was my playground as a child so it'll always hold a special place in my heart. The rhododendrons are spectacular at this time of year.

    1. I'm always out walking Archie so it's good that we have so many wonderful places on our doorstep, we have a great choice. Of course, it's always nicer when the weather's good though, not like today when it's throwing it down. Fingers crossed that it brightens up again for the weekend.

    1. The great thing about rhododendrons is that they're a mass of blooms and each plant intermingles with another providing a mass of colour, a stunning display. I've noticed lots of buttercups too, it must be a good year for them as you say.

  7. How beautiful! It seems like rhododendrons are very common there, which has surprised me when I realized it. I always thought of them as a warmer-climate plant, but I guess it's actually pretty warm there. I'm always amazed to see how many of the same plants you have there that we also have thriving in the desert, such as pyracantha and yucca. I often notice rhododendrons in woodsy scenes on Midsomer Murders, as if they grow wild in the woods, which is interesting because I think of it more as a landscaping plant here.

    1. We do have plenty of rhododendrons here and they're used in all manner of settings. The gardens at Temple Newsam are landscaped yet the rhododendrons at RHS Harlow Carr grow in a woodland setting. They're grown in many gardens here, though they're an acid loving plant so they need the right soil conditions. Pyracantha is a very common plant here and some people do grow yuccas, though they can be an indoor plant here as well as outdoors.

    1. We're lucky to live so close by. The grounds are so extensive that we can walk in different areas each time we visit and see something new, I do love the area around the lake though, especially at this time of year.

    1. The only problem with crocus time is that it's usually chilly, it was lovely to have a stroll in the late afternoon sunshine.

  13. Re: Your comment on my post.... I didn't know that such things happened, in your country. (motorway was built which cut through those fields and their view was no longer of fields but towering office blocks.)

I thought there were laws, which protected the countryside.... -sigh-

    1. We have greenbelt land here which is land designated to remain wild and undeveloped, however, it seems it stands for nothing these days. There's an action group here at the moment trying to save greenbelt land in the next village from developers and there's plans to build thousands of new houses on greenbelt land in Leeds. We'll be lucky to have any green space left in this country before long.

  16. The flowers are stunning. It's good to embrace these light evenings, it feels like we have so much more time in our days at the moment.
I tried to photograph a field of buttercups the other day but it was so windy they would have just been a blur! X

    1. The lighter evenings are something I look forward to all winter so I do try to make the most of them, especially when we've got good weather too. It's lovely to get out of the house at the back end of the day and it's something for Mick to look forward to after a day at work. Buttercup filled fields look stunning but very hard to photograph when it's windy.
