Messing About On The Water

I still haven't finished telling you about our holiday in Norfolk at the beginning of September so we're back there again today.

The day dawned bright on the Tuesday so we decided we'd head for the Broads and hire a boat for a couple of hours. There's quite a few different marinas where boats can be hired from, we chose Wroxham,

We had a short holiday on the Norfolk broads when Daniel and Eleanor were very young, I think Eleanor must only have been about three or four and she can't remember anything of it now so she really enjoyed having a go at steering the boat herself and she soon got the hang of it.

I've never seen so many herons in one place before, they could be spotted all the way along the river bank.

There were swans too, and different types of ducks.

This salty sea dog enjoyed his time aboard. The life vest was not his, he was just wearing it for the photo.

We could have gone on a boat trip rather than hire a boat ourselves but we definitely did the right thing, it was much more fun.

About half way into our hire it started to rain. It wasn't a problem though, we just pulled the roof across to keep us dry.

The rain soon passed by, which Archie was pleased about as he could go back to sticking his head over the side and watching the other boats go by.

It's a pity that this ice cream boat was closed for the day.

There's some beautiful little riverside cottages, lots of them even have their own mooring for their boat,

There's some beautiful larger cottages too.

Number 7 on my 50 Before 50 list is Take a boat ride, so that can now be crossed off.

This little trip has whetted Mick's appetite for a weekend away on the Broads next year. Nothing's been decided yet but we may very well end up back there. I won't be complaining.

    1. We had a lovely day. Archie went to the groomers yesterday so his long ears are now short ears for the time being, until they grow again.

  2. I'm not good on water in small boats, so we would have done the tour. Archie took to the boat better than I would have.

    1. Archie loved it in the boat, I wasn't sure he would but I needn't have worried.

  3. Looks like you had a great time 'messing about on water'. Glad your sea salty dog enjoyed it too, I can see he loved all the views. So nice that he's content wherever you take him. Have a nice weekend. Cathy x

  5. We use to own a boat and I can truly say I'd rather rent one than own one. Loved Archie in the life vest.

    1. I'll have to tell Mick that, I think owning a boat would be top of the list if we ever had any spare cash.

    1. It's a lovely place for a holiday. I can't think of anything more restful and peaceful than floating along a river in a boat.

  7. That looks like a really nice thing to do. I haven't been on a boat in a long time - not much water where I currently live - but I'd like to do it again sometime. I used to enjoy going out on lakes or rivers when I was a kid. I knew a few people with small boats, including my grandparents who had a sailboat for a short time.

    1. Mick is drawn to water wherever we go so I shouldn't have been surprised that we ended up on the Broads whilst in Norfolk.

  9. The last time I went on the Norfolk Broads I was in my teens. I wa in a rowing boat that was swamped by a paaaing motor boat. Our boat went down and I nearly drowned as no life jackets had been provided and I can’t swim. I had to be life saved!

    1. Oh my goodness, I wouldn't blame you if you've never been in a boat again since. I remember going on an outdoor pursuits course with work when I was in my teens and we had to go on a lake in a two man canoe. The other girl who was with me decided to stand up for some silly reason and the boat capsized. Luckily, I can swim, but we were both rather wet and smelly.

    1. It's a beautiful area and even more beautiful when you see it by boat. Archie enjoyed looking over the side and watching all the other boats pass by, some of them had dogs looking over the sides too.

  12. What a lovely way to spend the afternoon! I totally agree - taking a boat out would be far more fun than going on commercial boat. You can go where you want and take your time whenever you see something interesting.

  16. Looks like you had a super day. We're a long way from The Broads but have hired canal boats in the past, it's great, just don't drop the lock key in the canal.

    1. We had a lovely day. We were watching some larger boats coming into Wroxham and then pulling over and waiting for someone to come and take them under the bridge. It's a rather low bridge and we've noticed that the conditions on some of the boats which are hired out is that you have use the pilot service to take the boat through the bridge. We decided to go the other way.

    1. We really enjoyed the short holiday we took on a boat many years ago. Archie has had lots of different experiences, at least we now know that he'll be fine on a boat should we decide to take a holiday on one next year.
