Moving Home

You'd think we were moving house ourselves the way our house has been looking over the past week, there's been bags, boxes and suitcases everywhere.

Daniel and his girlfriend have been living in York since they finished at university earlier this year but they're both starting new jobs tomorrow so they've been packing everything up and it's all been making its way here ready for the big move.

Daniel's going to be working in Surrey, it took Mick the best part of five hours to drive down there yesterday when he took Daniel and dropped him off at his new house with all his belongings. Mick then had the same drive home again, alone this time.

His girlfriend is American and she was running out of time on her student visa, it was touch and go whether she'd have to return home. The visa allows a period of four months after the end of their course to find a job otherwise they face deportation. Luckily, she has now found a job and she'll be living and working in Essex. She was hoping that she could start a week after Daniel so that Mick could move her in too, however, her company need her to travel to Germany in a couple of weeks and to allow enough time for them to arrange the necessary visa she'll need, they require her to start tomorrow. She hasn't found anywhere to live yet so her employers are paying all her travel expenses and footing the bill for hotel accommodation and once she's found somewhere to live, Mick will take her belongings down for her.

Obviously, being apart isn't what they'd hoped for but it could have been so much worse, there'll be seventy miles between them, which is better than the four thousand seven hundred miles which would separate them had she had to return to Colorado. They're quite a way from us now too. We're hoping that we'll see them at Christmas but nothing's certain yet.

They've both done really well for themselves and landed good jobs with good salaries and benefits, all the hard work they put in at university has been worth it. I'm really proud of them and just hope that they're both happy in their chosen careers.

    1. My mum always said that you never stop worrying about your children and it's true. We're really pleased for them that things are working out as planned, they put lots of hard work in at uni and it's now paying off.

    1. It was a long day. While he was there, Mick took Daniel shopping and also collected some bits of furniture he wanted, so it was a long day. Mick got a well deserved lie in this morning but he'll be going off to play cricket shortly. Thank you.

  3. You should be proud of them, proud of their accomplishments and proud that they are so committed to each other. My oldest will soon be looking for employment as he graduates in December, I am a worried Mom!

    1. It's a good job that Mick doesn't mind driving, you wouldn't catch me driving up and down the motorways. Thank you, we're really pleased that they've done so well. I'll just get rid of the boxes and then Eleanor will land home from uni for Christmas with all her paraphernalia.

  5. I'm so pleased for both of them. Goodness me it was getting close for Jasmine but I'm so happy for her that the job came through in the end.
What a busy old time it's been for them getting all of this sorted, not to mention all the driving for Mick and of course all the behind the scenes jobs which I bet you've been doing too!

    1. We were starting to get worried for Jasmine but she got this offer just in time. The problem with getting a visa is that they have to work for an approved company and also be earning above a certain amount, which makes things even more difficult. I'm just glad that everything's sorted out now and they can both get to grips with their new jobs.

  7. Great news Jo, hard work always pays in the end jobs well deserved. Such a shame that they have to move so far away to achieve their dreams, thank goodness for technology.

    1. Neither of them wanted to move away but it's a case of having to go where the work is. I think technology makes it bearable these days.

    1. Thank you. They're both excited about their new jobs but a little apprehensive at the same time, I think that's because it's such a big step moving to a part of the county where they know absolutely no one.

    1. I couldn't go this time as the car was jam packed with all Daniel's belongings but we'll definitely go down and stay for the weekend at some point in the future.

    1. Daniel's girlfriend was getting quite desperate, it was so close to the time she'd have to pack up and return to America, so we're pleased that this job came along.

  13. A new town, new home and new job. They have so much to look forward too - it's both exciting but perhaps a bit scary too, especially at the start. Best of luck to them both!

  14. One of our daughters had similar problems. She is now married to a man from Panama, who she met at Uni. A little bit of separation will be a good test of their love for one another! (and hopefully only temporary).

    1. That's true, they do say that distance makes the heart grow fonder. They're hoping to meet up on weekends and they're not that far apart, it could have been much worse.

  15. Richard and I used to live in Portland (OR) and Switzerland respectively and I can completely sympathise with Daniel and his girlfriend. I am happy for them that they are 'only' 70 miles apart. You sound like the best possible parents in law! Wishing a good week. x

    1. It's hard when couples are separated but it's not that unusual these days, you have to go where the work is and hopefully, once they both have more experience, they'll be able to find work closer together. We try to help and support Daniel's girlfriend as much as we can, her family are thousands of miles away and I hate to think of her here on her own.

  18. Congratulations to both of them! KL has now got a job with more hours which means she has been able to give up the other 2 that she was working. Despite her good degree and prize winning dissertation she has chosen to work in a precarious industry that has nothing whatsoever to do with the subjects she studied. She's doing something she enjoys though and is happy, so all we can do is love and support her in her choices. It is a worry though.

    1. Thank you. I don't think we'll ever stop worrying about them. I know so many people that go to university and then work in a totally different industy to that in which they got their degree. Jobs are hard to come by these days and it doesn't always follow that people can find work where they want. Luckily, both Daniel and his girlfriend have found the type of jobs they want but even though Daniel had three offers, one nearby and another a couple of hours away, he chose one which was furthest away as it was more what he was looking for. Wishing KL all the very best, I hope everything works out for her.

    1. Thank you. I think it's quite an adventure for Daniel moving down south, I can't imagine the huge step it's been for his girlfriend. She's been here over three years now studying for her degree and now she's found a job she's hoping to make a life for herself here. I hope it works out for them.
