Hermione's Everyday Socks

I'm so thankful for my lovely hand knitted socks at the moment, they keep my feet so warm and toasty, just the thing for the cold weather we're now experiencing. I've knitted quite a few pairs of socks, many for other people, but I've got a new pair to add to my own sock drawer.

These are Hermione's Everyday Socks by Erica Lueder, inspired by the Harry Potter character. I really like the pattern, both to knit and to look at, and it's available free on Ravelry.

I shall definitely be knitting these socks again, however, I'd like to knit them in a plain coloured yarn. I don't think a variegated yarn shows off the pattern as well. I've used Laughing Yaffle yarn in Mango Tango colourway on this occasion.

I've got another pair of socks on my needles at the moment and this time they're for Mick, they'll be the first pair of hand knitted socks I've made for him.

  1. Lovely cosy socks. I'm wearing my own knitted socks today and my feet are nice and snug. I like the colour but I can see what you mean about it not showing off the pattern as well as a plain yarn would. It's a good excuse to make yourself another pair though. X

    1. I don't think you can beat hand knitted socks for warmth and cosiness. I shall definitely knit this pattern again, it's nice to knit up and looks good but I shall use plain yarn next time, though I do love the colour of these ones.

  2. I enjoy knitting socks, I do have 2 pairs for myself but mostly I knit for gifts. I have a waiting list of friends who want a pair, they seem to be just about the ultimate handmade gift.

    1. I love knitting socks too, it's a good job that other people love hand knitted socks just as much as I do otherwise I'd have a drawer full. It it nice to have a new pair for myself though.

    1. I love this design and it's so easy to knit up too. I think plain yarn would show off the pattern really well.

  5. I really must have a go at socks, can you suggest an easy design, I can knit but never made socks.

    1. I started off with the Crofter Socks which you can see in my sidebar. They're from a Sirdar pattern and knitted on two needles. They were good for getting used to the structure of socks before moving on to double pointed needles and working in the round. I started this type of sock from a pattern provided free with the sock wool I bought from Get Knitted, it was an easy pattern and one I still use now, but there are lots of plain sock patterns available free on Ravelry. If you type Vanilla Socks in to the search it will bring up lots of patterns. If you feel confident enough to start with a pattern, Hermione's Everyday Socks is easy enough, and I like the Thuja pattern too which you can see in my sidebar. Both of these are available free on Ravelry.

  7. Lovely! I think you are right though, the stripes do seem to interfere with the pattern, which is so nice in that close-up shot. I've added those to my que. I'm sure that Mick will be delighted once he gets his very first pair!

    1. I'm looking forward to trying the pattern again with plain yarn, I think they'll look lovely in just one colour. I'm knitting Mick a thicker pair so wear with his walking boots, they should keep his feet nice and toasty.

  10. Lovely socks I love the colours, I made some socks for a male friend's birthday they seemed to take forever to make and I used dark yarn which made the whole process even harder, good luck with yours. :) x

    1. Men tend to have larger feet than us ladies so they do take longer and the darker colours don't help either, as you say. I'm sure your friend loved them though so definitely worth the work you put in.

  11. Good Evening Jo, Perfect snuggly socks for these colder days and nights we are experiencing at the moment.
I love your choice of colours and what a fabulous name for the colour of the wool, Mango Tango.... I love it.
Talking of Tango, I am organising myself so that I can sit down in time to watched Strictly..... I love it.
    Enjoy your evening.
    Best Wishes

    1. I don't think you can beat hand knitted socks in this weather, it's true that wool keeps your feet toasty warm. I'm attracted to anything with a good name, I think Mango Tango suits this yarn well. I love Strictly too, Blackpool tonight, exciting.

    1. Mick's socks are knit in thicker yarn so they shouldn't take too long, I think he's waiting for them now he knows they're on the needles. I'm looking forward to my Strictly fix.

  13. Lovely socks Jo, that yarn is gorgeous........I've used the Hermione sock pattern a few times, it's a great pattern. I hope Mick's feet are not as large as my hubby's size 12's.....the foot section seems to go on forever, lol.

    1. I love the Hermione pattern, it's definitely one I'll use again and again. Mick's feet are a size 8 so they shouldn't take much longer than mine, which are a size 6.

  15. The socks look lovely, & I've still not attempted any (really must make note for next winter), but definitely won't be wearing any tomorrow as it's supposed to reach 38deg C here (yuk). Look forward to seeing what you knit Mick. Take care.

  16. I love hand knitted socks. The colours are very pretty but the pattern would be more visible in plain. They're still lovely though, and very toasty I bet!

  22. Beautiful socks, Jo. I love the colourway of the yarn. I'm sure they're very warm and perfect for this cold weather. We missed the snow whilst we were away, but saw how it had settled on the moors on the way back from the airport. Mick will appreciate the socks you're knitting for him.

    1. It's a lovely colourway, I just wish it showed the pattern off more. We got quite a bit of snow here but it didn't hang around long, thank goodness, though I think we're in for some more bad weather again this week.

    1. I'd definitely recommend a plain yarn if you're going to knit these socks, it's such a lovely pattern and a shame to hide it in a variegated or striped yarn, as I've found out.

    1. The pattern isn't too bad in these colours but I think it would get totally lost in more variegated yarn. I'm planning on knitting them again in plain yarn, I think the pattern will really pop then.
