Down By The River

We had a trip to York on Saturday, mainly to see Daniel, but the weather was so nice that we had a detour before we went to call on him and ended up by the river. It's such a wonderful place to be when the sun's shining. You can just see the Minster in the background of this photo above the trees.

We love seeing all the different boats moored by the riverside.

How cute is this little goose family. Although the gosling at the back looks as though it has a broken neck, I can assure you that it was fine.

The boat sporting a cow is an ice cream boat, it was doing a roaring trade.

I spotted the bar behind the ice cream boat so we decided to cross the bridge and go for some refreshment.

It was really lovely sitting in the sunshine watching the boats on the river. It's always nice to do something unplanned like this.

As it happened, York Marina had organised a flotilla of 30 boats to sail from York Marina to Clifton Bridge and back so we watched them all go by.

Some of the boats had been decorated and their occupants were dressed up too.

I think if we ever won the lottery, a boat would be the first thing that Mick would buy.

We didn't stay long before carrying on our journey to see Daniel but it was a lovely break in the day and we enjoyed our time catching up with Daniel too.

  1. One of the first things that my brother did when he emigrated to Oz was get his captains license and buy a boat. A year later he sold it and upgraded his motorbike, he just did not make full use of the boat, he plans to get another when he retires. Your photos are lovely, I have never been to York, it was not that far fro me in Tydd but i never made the time. Now that I am in Wales I try to visit somewhere new at least once a month. There are some really stunning places around.

    1. I think you probably need plenty of time on your hands to make full use of a boat, it's something that Mick would love, he's drawn to water somehow. We're so lucky to live so close to York, we're about twenty minutes away, a little longer to get to the centre. It's such a beautiful city with so much going for it and I never tire of looking around there. We are lucky that we've got some wonderful places to visit in this country.

  3. How great that you got to enjoy the boats going past. It looks as though the weather was good for you too. I have never seen an ice cream boat before, a fun idea though isn't it! xx

    1. We arrived at just the right time to see the flotilla, we struck lucky there. I've seen a few ice cream boats on my travels, makes a change from the many ice cream vans round and about.

  5. I love the walk along the river in York, we stayed on holiday once and used the walk each day to get into the walled part, water changes the out look every where you go.

    1. I agree, the walk along the river is lovely, especially on a sunny day. This part of the river is well used too with the rowing club being situated here.

    1. We did. It made a change to do something on the spur of the moment like this, we're usually rushing here or there with days planned with things we have to do, especially at the moment.

  7. I've never seen an ice cream boat! Every year when we go to Majorca, we walk round the marina and Malcolm dreams of winning the lottery and buying a boat - but given the size of some of the boats it would have to be a Euromillions win!

    1. There's some really beautiful boats. I'm definitely a land person but even I can see the attraction.

  9. I quite fancy a boat myself, ideally in the Mediterranean! Better renew that lottery ticket :-)

    1. I wouldn't say no either, I can just imagine myself sitting on deck, glass of wine in my hand. That's the life.

  11. We love York, and its smaller cousin Chester. All the old buildings and street life is brilliant.

    1. I've never been to Chester, though Eleanor's going to the university open day there soon, it's a shame I'm not going with her as I'd have liked a look round. I do love York though.

  12. York is one of our favouritist (!!) places to visit. We've visited it so many times over the years and never tire of it. We do have to be careful though as, according to ancient laws (apparently) Scottish people can still be shot with a bow and arrow on Sundays!! Eeeek!! :oD

    1. I'm exactly the same, there's so much to see and do in York that it's a place you can go to time and time again and never get bored. Ha ha, I didn't know about that ancient law.

  13. Great photos, and beer at the bar is a lovely treat, especially when its spontaneous. Just think, if Mick bought a boat he could start his own ice cream boat business ;)

    1. Judging by the type of boat Mick likes, I don't think his idea of boat ownership is selling ice cream. Let's just say it would have to be a huge lottery win to afford what he's after.

  14. That looks a lovely detour on the way to see Daniel. My dad restored boats as a hobby when I was a child, I remember spending hours at the boatyard and going up and down the river, happy days! xx

    1. I think unexpected things are always so much nicer, the sunshine was just as unexpected as the trip out. I really appreciate it when people put the effort in, I enjoyed watching all the decorated boats and looking at all the costumes.

  16. I have a fantasy that involves selling the house, buying a boat and chasing the sun round the world. Sadly Mark doesn't share this!!!!! Jx
