Trebarwith Strand

This was the fifth year out of the last six that we've holidayed in Cornwall. There are some places we know fairly well now as we've visited them most years, these include Padstow and Ilfracombe, which I wrote about in my Crossing The Border To Devon post.

As well as returning to certain villages each year we usually frequent the same beaches, but this year we found a fabulous place called Trebarwith Strand. I'd read about it before we went so during our first week away, we went and found it. There's a convenient car park just up the road from the beach and a few little gift shops and eateries on the way down.

What I didn't realise was that when the tide's in, it covers the whole of the sand and all that's left to see are the rocks at the base of the cliffs.

I've never seen so many muscles, limpets and periwinkles clinging to rocks as I did here.

The tide was right in and there was no chance of getting on the beach so we decided to abandon our plan for that day.

When we got back to the lodge, we checked the tide times for the rest of the week. The following day dawned sunny so we decided to make a second trip, this time ensuring that our visit coincided with low tide.

The crustaceans were still there, I was fascinated by them, so many to see.

Even Archie was intrigued by them.

There were lots of anemones attached to the rocks too.

We saw a few jellyfish along the beach, nothing to worry about though, they were few and far between.

I don't know what this is, perhaps another variety of jellyfish, quite odd looking though.

There's 800m of sandy beach at Trebarwith Strand when the tide's out, which is contained by cliffs. Natural caves are found in the cliffs.

We decided to go and explore one of the caves, though I have to say I wasn't all that excited about the prospect as I get a little claustrophobic sometimes.

Looking out through the mouth of the cave, you can see that this area of the beach is quite rocky. There's lots of little rock pools with all manner of creatures swimming about.

The cave walls were interesting. We'd left Daniel on the beach, I'm sure he'd have been able to tell us something about the geology of them had he been with us, he got an A* in his GCSE.

There were lots of rocks inside the cave as well as outside.

Right at the back of the cave, you can see how it narrows. I nearly turned round when I was half way in, I'm glad I made it now. There was lots of dripping water from  parts of the roof.

The sun was shining brightly as we came back out of the cave.

Archie had fun again in the rockpools. He always dries himself off by rolling in the sand. Daft dog!

Trebarwith Strand is a fabulous beach, you just need to make sure that you've got the tide times before making a trip there as you could be disappointed. There's lots to see, and it's great for adventures, especially if you've got children with you, caves, rockpools, sand, sea, rocks, what more could you ask for?

On our way back to the car, we stopped off at one of the beach cafes for a portion of chips and some hot doughnuts.

Mmmm, those doughnuts were delicious, my mouth's watering just looking at the photos of them.

We had a perfect day. A wonderful place to go in summer when the sun's shining.

This post has been submitted to dotcomgiftshop as an entry in their summer competition.

  1. Thank God for tide tables! There is nothing worse than getting to a beach and not getting your paddle on! This one looks lovely, and please, please, please why torment me with the donuts? I can smell them now!

    1. I wish we'd found this beach when we first started visiting Cornwall, it's one I'd return to time and time again. I absolutely love freshly baked doughnuts, I can never resist them.

    1. It a wonderful place, somewhere I'd return to if we visit Cornwall again. There's some lovely little cafes just off the beach too. We always take picnics with us when we're out for the day but we had a treat that day, I can't walk past the smell of doughnuts without succumbing.

  3. It looks like you had a lovely time indeed! There are certain things about the coastline of Cornwall and Devon that are completely different from anywhere else, even Dorset is different. Glad you had a great time exploring :)

    Best wishes,

    1. We've never been to Dorset but it's somewhere I'd love to go. We've found lots of different beaches in Cornwall, and Devon too, all with something different to offer, but I have to say that I loved Trebarwith Strand.

  5. We would love to go to Cornwall Jo, it is on the list and the main reason is to actually go rockpooling there! Trebarwith Strand sounds like just the place for us. It is quite a long journey for us though, around 6 hours drive(!) so we are just waiting for the children to be a little older. 5 of us in one car for 6 hours is not appealing right now, especially with my youngest who is difficult at the best of times! We normally go to Wales for rockpooling with it being close. Archie is such a good looking chap, I love the photo of him getting dry! And those donuts have made my mouth water, ha ha. :)

    1. It's about six hours drive for us too, though it takes us longer as we have to keep stopping to let Archie stretch his legs. Long journeys are usually difficult with young children, it's a long time for them to just sit in a car, but Cornwall would be perfect when they're a little older. I can definitely recommend Trebarwith Strand, they'd love it there.

  6. I had to laugh at Archie drying himself on the sand. Rosie was the opposite - she'd do anything she could to avoid going in the water. :o)

    1. Archie ends up full of sand after he rolls, it gets everywhere, even in his eyes but it doesn't stop him. He absolutely loves water, we have a job to keep him out of it.

  7. That was a brilliant post and I've popped that place in my notebook. The sealife was amazing and the photos stunning of the scenery. Take care.

  8. What an interesting beach, we are not really beach people, but that would be a good day out. Might leave the cave out though, not a happy bunny in caves lol xcx

    1. There's so much to see on this beach. I don't think a holiday would be a holiday without a beach for us, it was nice to find some we haven't been to before. I'm not too fond of caves either, I went potholing in my teens and didn't enjoy the experience at all.

  9. You've had a lovely time away and I can see how enjoyable it must have been for all the family with a special birthday celebration as well. I spent so many enjoyable holidays in Devon and Cornwall as a child and one or two others with our own children so your beach scenes reminded me of those. The chips and doughnuts are making me feel hungry especially as I'm trying to lose some weight after all the wonderful meals we've had on our recent holiday and when there are plenty of delicious fruits, salad and vegetables available just now!

    1. I'm sure this is the last holiday that Daniel will come on with us so it was important to create some lasting memories, I think we achieved that. I'd never been to Cornwall or Devon until we started coming here six years ago, but I've fallen in love with both places, we're so lucky to have such beautiful places to visit in our own country. Summer is a great time to lose weight with all the wonderful salads around, though I find it quite hard to stick to a diet when I've got people at home with me through the day. Come September, I'll be back on my healthy eating regime.

  10. We always holidayed in Cornwall when we were kids. Living in Dorset I can thoroughly recommend it as a holiday destination! Our beaches have unfortunately been inundated with jellyfish much like your second picture because of the hot weather!

    1. Thank you for visiting and letting me know. I love to hear when my posts have inspired someone to take a trip somewhere so I'm really pleased that you enjoyed it, though I'm rather jealous now, I'd have loved to have been there yesterday instead of here in Leeds.
