A Sunny Day

Sunny days have been few and far between just lately, so when I woke up and saw bright light shining through the bedroom curtains, I jumped out of bed and decided that a day outdoors was the order of the day.

We decided on a trip to Roundhay Park, primarily to visit the gardens, which you can read about on my Garden Visiting In February post on my The Good Life blog, but also so that Archie could have a good run in the park.

I'm always transported back to my wedding day, nearly 24 years ago, when I visit Roundhay Park as we held our reception in The Mansion. It was July and we had torrential downpours of rain as well as sunshine on the day.

Yesterday, the temperature had risen to double figures and it had tempted lots of people to get out in the fresh air, the park was full of dog walkers, couples out for a stroll, families with children on scooters and people just enjoying a break from the incessant rain.

We walked down to the lakeside. Archie had to be put on his lead here otherwise he'd have jumped in, he loves water.

Hundreds of birds were waiting for people to throw bread to them, they were making a raucous noise.

Although we're still in winter, the newly emerging bulbs are reminding me that spring isn't far away. They too were enjoying a rare day of sunshine.

I'm glad that we made the most of it while we could, it's dull and windy again today, though so far, it's been dry. A few more nice days would be very welcome.

I've recently reviewed a book, Rosehips On A Kitchen Table, on my The Good Life blog. The publishers are offering the book as a giveaway prize, and as I know that many of my readers over here on Through The Keyhole would enjoy the book, I thought I'd let you know about it. If you want to be in with a chance of winning it, head over and leave a comment on the relevent post, but be quick, the giveaway ends at noon on Tuesday the 25th of February 2014.

  1. We must visit Roundhay Park - haven;t been for years! Only saying yesterday that we should visit their Tropical House. Something I always think when passing the sign of the motorway and then do nothing about.

    1. It's funny you should mention Tropical World, it was going to be the place I visited for my garden visit in February until I woke and saw the sunny day. I think I shall put it on hold now until the end of the year when I will probably be looking for somewhere dry to visit. It's many years since I last visited it, it's grown somewhat since then and has just recently been closed for refurbishment.

    1. Thank you. There's two lakes in Roundhay Park, the largest, Waterloo Lake, was a former quarry. It was constructed by soldiers who had returned from the Napoleonic wars and therefore, named after the battle of Waterloo. Mick used to fish on the lake when he was a boy.

  3. It looks like such a beautiful place to visit and the weather looks lovely too. I enjoy seeing places like this in other countries, so much the same yet different. It looks like a wonderful place to get married. :)

    1. It's fabulous park. We didn't get married in The Mansion, we just held our reception there, though it is licenced for weddings now. There's a beautiful sweeping staircase where brides, including me, have photos taken.

    1. I think the snowdrops and crocuses were enjoying the sunshine as much as we were, there were huge swathes of crocuses, all with their petals unfurled.

    1. There's certainly something for everyone at Roundhay Park, especially when the sun's shining. I'd have like to have had a little snack in the Lakeside Cafe but we had Archie with us so we couldn't.

    1. Archie had a whale of a time running around. There's so much open space at Roundhay Park so it's ideal for dog walking. He slept for a long time when we got home.

    1. It really is. I feel like spring is on the way now, though we haven't had a particularly cold winter. Plenty of rain yes, but not many frosts.

  11. It was a good opportunity to get out for a stroll around the park and gardens on Saturday morning wasn't it? Roundhay Park looks lovely with plenty of space and a large lake. Lovely to see the crocuses - always uplifting at this time of year, especially as it's turned cold, windy and dull again.

    1. It was a lovely day on Saturday, the sun was shining and it was quite warm too. Roundhay Park is always great for a walk, especially if you have a dog with you as there's so much open space. It started out dull here today but the sun has now put in an appearance again.

  13. Hello Jo,
We stumbled across your blog through Annie at 'Knistofacto' and were immediately taken aback by the mention of Roundhay Park. It is now many, many years that I left Leeds for pastures new but the mere mention of it took me back several decades.

Oh how I remember the Rolling Stones giving a concert there ........when could that have been? And hearing the sound in my parents' back garden...all for free. The park is a wonderful green space in the heart of the city and looks to be well maintained. That is good to know.

    1. Roundhay Park has attracted many top performers, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Williams spring to mind. I saw Michael Jackson there in 1988. The Rolling Stones concert was in 1982, hard to believe it's now over thirty years ago. Roundhay Park is beautifully maintained, and there's something there for everyone. Thank you for letting me know how you found my blog, I'm always interested to know how people find their way here.
