Traveller's Notebook

I absolutely love my Filofax. Actually, Filofaxes, I have a few, but only two that I use on a regular basis. I have a red Chameleon in the A5 size which I use for finances and household things and a crimson Malden in the personal size which is for everyday use.

My set up is still very similar to what I blogged about in my A Tour Of My Filofax Crimson Malden post back in 2014. A few things have changed but not a great deal.

I still love using my Filofax, it keeps me organised and it contains so much information at the tip of my fingers. There's so many other organisation tools out there but I've never been tempted to try any because of how happy I've been with my Filofax, however, reading Nikki's Stationery Sunday: Elrohir Leather Steampunk Traveller's Notebook post on her Notes of Life blog, something clicked and I decided that I'd like to give a Traveller's Notebook a go. I'm still really happy with my Filofax so I don't want to change my system of organisation but I thought I'd like to try a Traveller's Notebook in conjunction with my Filofax.

I mentioned this to Nikki and asked her advice about buying one and she kindly offered to make one for me.

A Traveller's Notebook is basically a book-like cover which holds one or more smaller notebooks with elastic bands.

I'm absolutely thrilled to bits with the Traveller's Notebook which Nikki has made. Isn't she clever?

It's in the most beautiful soft purple leather and Nikki has added a little charm to the band which keeps the notebook closed.

The binder holds four notebooks in the Field Notes and Pocket size and Nikki has very generously supplied the first four to get me started. There's one with plain purple pages, one with plain green, a lined notebook and one with dots.

It's a lovely size to hold in the hand and won't take up much room if I pop it in my bag to take it out and about with me. Nikki said that she prefers a more rigid leather but if I'd bought one, I'd have gone with a soft leather so I'm really pleased with this.

I always love reading Nikki's Stationery Sunday posts, I'm a bit of a stationery freak and have always loved paper and pens. If you're the same and haven't yet checked out Nikki's blog I would urge you to do so.

Thank you, Nikki, I'm thrilled to bits with my Traveller's Notebook and I'm looking forward to using it.

  1. I always carried a Filofax when I was working, in fact I had two, an A5, which was my bible, had everything in it, plus A4, which I kept all my equipment for meetings, it had a zip closure. so I could tuck loads of things in. I am very organised, so when visiting customers, I liked to stay looking tidy. Love your one, the colour and texture looks perfect.

    1. I've used a Filofax for a lot of years, there was a period when I went on to a diary but I came back to Filofax again in the end. I love how versatile they are, the pages can be moved about, which I love.

  2. I love my Filofax too. I've used them for years, since I was a vicar. Did you know that Filofax was invented for clergy use?

    1. I didn't know that Filofax was invented for clergy use. I knew the main users of Filofax in the very early days were clergy and the military but I didn't realise that was their original intended use. To think that they're used by people in all walks of life these days.

  3. It's beautiful Jo. I feel quite ashamed of my cheap notebook (drawn on by Lily) with loose bits of paper held in it by an elastic band! 😃 I might just need to up my game now. X

    1. Ha ha, whatever works for you. As much as I love notebooks, and I have many, I keep any lists, important information, or things that I know I'll need to refer back to often in my Filofax.

  4. I do love a nice notebook, although I prefer lined paper to plain.
i have a filofax and intended to use it properly this year but I haven't. I have a to do list book though which i keep in the kitchen and jot down jobs that need doing, or things Mark needs to do at the weekend, it has little tick boxes and we both love ticking those jobs off, lol there is something very satisfying about ticking a chore off a list isn't there :-)

    1. I prefer lined paper too, even the diary inserts in my Filofax are lined. I keep my to do list in my Filofax and agree, it feels so good to tick each chore off.

  5. Being a stationery lover too, I'll try & get to Nikki's blog at some time. Look forward to see how you use your new notebooks. I have a to do list notebook, like Maggie above, which I also keep in the kitchen for household tasks & other bits I need to do during the day. Most appointments outside home are kept on the calendar. Thanks for sharing & take care.

    1. Most of my friends use a calendar and my mum and dad do too but I've never been able to get on with them, I much prefer a personal diary of some sort. My Filofax enables me to keep all my appointments and notes together in one place. I'm not sure how I'm going to use my Traveller's Notebook yet but it's so beautiful, I'm looking forward to doing so.

  6. You've got us all thinking about notebooks and filofaxes now Jo. Enjoyed your post, interesting. I have a wanna be filofax (teen phrase), A6 in size and quite small really, so it doesn't get used much. I have an A5 diary from Oxfam which I love. It's simple, clear and I tend to use it so for me that's got to be good. Maybe one day...

    1. I went through a phase of using a pocket size Filofax but it just wasn't big enough so I changed to an A5 for my household planner and a personal size for my everyday planner. It gives me more space to write and I find it a better size for me.

  7. It looks a great idea, a lovely colour and jolly useful. I have a filofax that I use for Christmas present ideas from one year to the next but a notebook would be just as good really.

    1. I love it, I'm sure it will be well used once I figure out how I'm going to utilise it. I have my Christmas present ideas in my Filofax too as well as lists of what I've bought everyone in previous years.

  8. I tend to use a small notebook, and the diary I'm usually given every year doesn't get used much. I like the idea of the Traveller's Notebook. xx

    1. I've come across Traveller's Notebooks in the past and never had the urge to give one a go, I'm not sure what clicked on this occasion but I'm looking forward to getting started with it. I wouldn't be without my diary, I use it all the time.

  9. Interesting, since I am not at all familiar with a Filofax.

Learn something new, every day! :-)

    1. Filofax was a very big name in the 80's but many people have gone over to electronic organisers now. I still like my pen and paper.

  12. I'm a stationery lover too, and enjoyed reading your post today. Last week my daughter gave me a bullet journal, for my birthday. The Filofax has the advantage of being able to take out papers, the bj is like a book, so I wonder whether I'll like that part of it. Read your post back in 2014 again today, and I love how you use your Filofax. Thanx for the ideas!

    1. I remember loving stationery from being a little girl. I've never tried a bullet journal but I know what you mean about being unable to move the paper around, that's what put me off a Traveller's Notebook in the past but I'm looking forward to giving it a go now. I have an A5 Chameleon Filofax which I use for all my household things as well as my everyday Filofax, perhaps I should write a post about how I use that.

  13. I have a mini one and still find it useful. I enjoy having notebooks and specials pens. Last christmas I was given a lovely left handed fountain pen, writes like a dream. I have a little notebook in the kitchen to jot down recipe ideas as I cook xcx

    1. I didn't know that you could get left handed fountain pens. I love my fountain pen but I can't write a neatly with it as I can with a ballpoint pen.

    2. I had a left handed calligraphy set once, still didnt get on with it as the teacher couldn´t show me how to use it properly. You can get quite alot of dedicated left handed gadgets, ideal for me but frustrates everyone else lol.

    3. Having dedicated left handed gadgets must be good for those who are left handed, there must be some things which are really awkward to use otherwise.

    4. I once had one too, but somehow I could not write very neatly with it.

    5. I think it probably takes practice. I don't use my fountain pen enough to get used to it really.

  14. That does look very nice, I love the colour.
You are going to enjoy your gift.

    All the best Jan

    1. I love notebooks but I also like everything kept together, hence the Filofax, but I think the Traveller's Notebook may work for me too. I really like my Bic 4 colour pens, I use them to colour code things in my diary.
