Yoo Hoo, I'm Home

We got back from our holiday in North Yorkshire and Northumberland on Saturday. The weather has been mixed, mostly dull and cloudy but it's still been warm and we've managed days on the beach and had a nice relaxing time.

The base for our first week was Pickering. We stayed in a lovely cottage not far from the town centre. I took a few photos to show you, I always like to see where people have stayed.

It had a lovely garden too, plenty of room for Archie to run around and the neighbours were really friendly. We had a chat over the garden fence about the veggies they were growing in their own garden.

We had lots of days out...Whitby.

Robin Hood's Bay.

I had to laugh at this sign I saw in the greencrocer's window.

Goathland.
I've only seen the 60's tv drama, Heartbeat, which is set in the fictional village of Aidensfield but filmed in Goathland, a couple of times but many of the sights here are what you might see on the programme.

The sheep on the moors here just wander free. This one looks as though it's wearing a pair of earrings.

Scarborough.

We had a wander around Peasholm Park then sat and listened to the organist for a while.

It was a chilly day when we visited Scarborough but it didn't stop Eleanor donning her bikini. I think she realised she'd made a mistake though.

There were other places we visited too but I'll tell you about those in future posts.

Typically, it was a beautiful day on Saturday when we arrived home. It would have been nice to have that sunshine for the whole fortnight we were away but at least I got the washing straight in the machine and managed to get it all washed, dried and ironed.

  1. Hello, this is a most enjoyable post with lovely pictures.
It's a shame you didn't have a bit more sunshine but good to see that you enjoyed yourselves. Flighty xx

    1. The last time we went abroad was in 2008. I think you have to accept that when you holiday in the UK, there'll be times when the weather isn't up to much, however, we always make the most of it and we were lucky that we had very few rainy days, perhaps two. We did have a good time and visited some wonderful places.

  2. Welcome back and I'm glad you had a good holiday. We've never been right over to the coast in Yorkshire. It's looks great so must pay a visit the next time we're there.

    1. I may be biased living in Yorkshire but I think we've got some wonderful places to visit here. We have the best of both worlds, fabulous little bays on the coast as well as larger resorts, the North Yorks Moors and of course, the wonderful Yorkshire Dales. You must pay us a visit.

  3. You make the north look good, us soft southerners don't travel up very often.

    1. I don't have to try hard to make the north look good, it's wonderful up here. You should don your wellies and flat caps and travel up here more often. Don't forget to bring your whippets with you, ha ha.

  4. Love North Yorkshire and had really good times in Pickering; both times a daily trip to the station to wave at the trains was a must! (the children were a lot younger then!)

    1. We visited the station in Pickering but didn't take a ride this time. It's a lovely town and a great base as there's so much within reach of the town itself if you've got a car.

  5. It sounds like you had a very nice trip. I love the look of those beach huts, how pretty. Eleanor is a brave girl, she must have really wanted to try out that bikini, haha. I look forward to seeing more of your travels.

    1. I think beach huts attract many of us, especially when they're so brightly coloured like these ones are. We always hired a beach hut on our holiday when I was a child, happy memories. Ha ha, I think Eleanor regretted her decision to wear her bikini, she's braver than I am, in more ways than one.

  6. I don't think Eleanor was going to get much of a sun tan! We went to Goathland many years ago - we took my mother-in-law who was an avid Heartbeat fan and she loved it. They were filming on the day we went too. It is strange to see the sheep wandering free there, isn't it? They must be very sure that no one is going to drive very fast! Glad you had a good time, your photos are great! xx

    1. Believe it or not, Eleanor did get a little burnt while we were away, not on Scarborough Beach though. I'm sure your mother in law will have loved Goathland if she was a Heartbeat fan, especially since they were filming on the day. It was all a little wasted on me as I've only seen the programme a couple of times. I loved seeing all the sheep wandering free but my heart was in my mouth more than once when I saw them wandering across the road and a car coming in the other direction.

  7. Welcome back, Jo. I'm glad you had a good time even if the weather wasn't so great. Getting your washing done - and dried and ironed!! - on the same day you got back is an achievement indeed! :o)

    1. Thank you. We had a lovely time, as they say, a change is as good as a rest. I didn't quite manage to get the whole lot of washing done on Saturday but it was all done by Sunday evening.

  8. Welcome Home Jo ... lovely post and your photo's are lovely to look at.

Love the coloured beach huts at Scarborough, and those rowing boats too.

It's always good to get back, get the washing done, dried and ironed ... is this a woman's thing!!?? LOL

Hope you have a good week.

    All the best Jan

    1. Thank you. I loved those rowing boats, each one with its own name. Ha ha, I think getting the washing done when we get home from a holiday is definitely a woman's thing, I can breathe again now it's all done.

  9. OK Jo, I got a big lump in my throat and a few tears after seeing those photos. I know all those places so well and our daughter even leased one of those beach huts for a few years. Last year I had my birthday tea in Whitby and we visit there each time we come over. Love the notice in the window and we once watched a small truck trying to back up the cobbled street in Robin Hood Bay and he wasn't having much luck at all. Did you see the lovely carvings in Peasholm Park? Look forward to seeing lots more from you. Thanks and take care.

    1. There's so many lovely places to visit on the Yorkshire coast. Whitby is always a favourite and so is Scarborough. I didn't see the carvings in Peasholm Park but we didn't venture far, just round the lake. It's a shame the weather wasn't a bit nicer but at least we didn't have lots of rain, it was just dull and cloudy most of the time.

  10. Lots of lovely holiday photos! Of course I like the sheep best!
It is good to get all the washing done as soon as you get back - and yes, I think too that it is a woman's thing!!

    1. The sheep line the roadside along the North York Moors, I can hardly watch when they decide to cross the road in front of oncoming traffic. It's a relief to have all the washing done, though there seemed to be much less this year with there just being the three of us.

  11. Picture post card pretty.
I love the rows of beach huts.
I did smile at Eleanor wrapped up in the towel!
The cottage looks lovely and clean and very cosy too, what a great garden it had.

    1. There's some really pretty places along the Yorkshire coast, especially the little bays. Eleanor doesn't let a little thing like the lack of sun stop her getting her bikini out, perhaps that day wasn't the most sensible though. We thought the cottage in Pickering was lovely and we were made most welcome.

  14. Oh Jo it's looks like a lovely place. I shall bookmark this as my mum wants to go to Yorkshire for a holiday & this looks perfect + I'm watching old episodes of Heartbeat so it will be perfect for me too. Glad you all had a great time x

    1. These are all places we visit regularly but it was nice having a base a little nearer so we could spend longer days there, it's a wonderful part of the country.

  18. Hi, it is a lovely part of the world. I remember visiting it a while ago now, and we loved it despite winter weather. You should visit Galicia, Northern Spain, which is green but with guaranteed sun in the summer, especially where we are in Ribeira Sacra in South Galicia. All the best.
