York Ice Trail

York was hosting its annual Ice Trail last weekend and we decided to visit on the Saturday. We haven't been before, and though some of the sculptures were amazing, I doubt we'll visit again, it was just so busy. I thought it would be enjoyable wandering around the city looking out for the thirty three different sculptures but it was anything but, it seemed to just bring out the worst in people when they were jostling for a photograph. I've never encountered so many rude people in one place in one day in my life. I love York, we visit often, but I'll give the Ice Trail a miss in future.

The sculptures were sponsored by local businesses. You can pick up a map which shows you their locations.

Anyway, here are the photos I took before I gave it up as a bad job.

Our City of Dreams provided by Make it York.

Floating Dreams provided by Lucia Bar.

Dreaming of Cut and Craft provided by Cut and Craft.

My favourite of the day was Train of Dreams by National Railway Museum.

City of Trees provided by Dalby Forest.

A Journey in Ice provided by Grand Central.

Bradley's Jewellers Christmas Robin Egg provided by Bradley's Jewellers. I would have loved to have got a better photo of this, there was a second egg and a robin in the middle of it.

There was also a live carving but there wasn't a hope in hell of being able to see what was happening, the crowd was about ten people deep in places.

Not our most successful day out but we'll chalk this one down to experience, haha.

  1. Sounds a perfect day out, other than rude people, these days they crowd around things with their phones out, in our day (God am I that old) we took our photo and moved out the way. Lovely photo's, York is not a city for crowds.

  2. Crowds are not an enjoyable sight. Since Covid, they are also dangerous. However, it seems your camera has captured some nice sculptures.

  3. Beautiful sculptures. How are they kept frozen?
Such a shame about the crowds - people seem to feel so entitled these days. We are more selfish and self-centred by the day.

    1. They're not kept frozen, only by the weather. I think this is why they host it in February. They use a second, identical sculpture on the second day.

  8. The ice sculptures are amazing, just a shame that your experience was marred by others being selfish and rude.

  9. There are too many people in the centre of York some days. You are OK in Leeds, but the increasing centralization if sucking the life blood out of a lot of other large Yorkshire town.

  11. I love that egg! What a shame you didn't have a fun time with so many people around but hopefully the City shops and cafes made some extra money attracting everyone there.

  14. What you were able to see of the ice sculptures were very nice. That train was quite impressive and the carved egg was beautiful! I am sorry the actual experience was so disappointing. There always seems to be so many people everywhere these days and manners seem to have gone by the wayside.
