A Crisp Autumn Day

We woke to a frost on Monday. The weather has got much cooler over the last week or so, though I'm not complaining when I see that my Canadian friends and some of my American friends too have snow now. It may be cold but a bright sunny crisp autumn day is preferable to a dull soggy one so as soon as I saw the sun shining, and with my back feeling a little better than it had last week, we decided on a short walk at Lotherton.

There's a marked difference now to how everything looked the last time I was there. Many trees are devoid of their leaves and there's no doubt in my mind that winter has just about arrived.

The woods look rather bright with few leaves to block out the light. It's a totally different outlook to that we see during the summer months.

Although Wildlife World is closed at present because of lockdown, the woods take us round the back of the pens and we can catch glimpses of various birds. The emus were quite inquisitive on Monday.

Our walk takes us through parts of the wood which looks stunning with all the vibrant leaf litter beneath the unclothed trees.

Archie managed to find the soggiest leaves in the woods, though it isn't as muddy at the moment as it has been.

There aren't many berries on the holly bushes we saw. Perhaps the birds have had their fill already.

Where there's holly there must be ivy, and here it is creeping up this tree.

Although my back was hurting as I walked, it wasn't as bad as it was last week and it's continued to improve throughout the week so I'm hoping it's on the mend again.

  1. I'm glad you felt able to go for a walk, that looks like a lovely place to visit. I do like autumn and scrunching through crisp fallen leaves underfoot. I'm sure Archie enjoyed his walk too. I hope your back continues to feel better.

  2. I love to see trees without leaves, their structure is always beautiful, I prefer the colder weather, it just feels right. The birds have stripped our neighbours trees and our small hedge of berries. They are pecking at the Olives on my tree, which I don't mind.

  3. What a difference, all those beautiful colours in your first picture to what it is now but still lovely nevertheless, that carpet of Autumn leaves looks stunning. I walked through the woods near me last week and everything looked so stark and bare after the lushness of summer but it will return. I'm pleased your back is improving Jo but don't overdo it. xx

  4. The holly and the ivy, one of my favourite hymns. Its is beautiful this time of year as long as you are wrapped up against the elements. Its another very cold, frosty and foggy morning.

  7. I'm glad that your back is easy enough to take a walk somewhere enjoyable for you and Archie. He looks as if he's having fun among the leaves. I've had a few good walks, but it's quite muddy and slippery on wet leaves so I try to stick to clear paths when I can. Those emus look friendly and something different to see on your walk through Lotherton.

  9. Most of the leaves are down now and it's very murky too but lovely to get out into the woods and take in the wildlife. There are so many holly berries here, maybe we're heading for a cold Winter.

  13. Lovely wintry walk through the grounds of Lotherton, but what a surprise to see the emu.....yes, they are ever inquisitive & love pinching & eating workers lunches out in the forest. Just ask my DH. Hope the back keeps improving, take care, stay safe & huggles. PS: blowing a gale here today & raining, more like winter than summer & very different to Friday which got to 33deg.
