Charlotte

I don't grow many potatoes now but I do still like to have at least a couple of containers to empty out at harvest time, I don't think you can beat the taste of home grown potatoes boiled with mint and slathered in butter. My mouth's watering just thinking about it.

This year I'm growing Charlotte, mainly because I came across this packet in one of the discount stores and thought that eight tubers for a pound was a bargain. Charlotte is a second early salad variety and very popular amongst those people who 'grow their own'. I've grown them a couple of times myself in the past when I had my allotment but they were planted in the ground. I can't remember ever growing them in containers before.

It's time now to lay them out to chit, basically laying them out in the light (not direct sunlight) so that they'll start to sprout prior to planting. Let the growing season begin.

  1. I've never grown potatoes, we did think of buying some of those potato bags last year but we didn't really have anywhere to stand them.

  2. Exciting! Good luck with the containers, we use compost bags which work well as you can top up the soil as you go along.

  3. They're still my favourite variety so I grow lots on the plot. I've got mine in the spare bedroom chitting, and hope to be planting them out around the end of next month. xx

  4. Let the growing season begin, indeed, Jo. Planting potatoes in containers is a fine method. I have used grow-bags with success and I think that's what some of your commenters are referring to. Keep us posted! P x

  11. There's nothing better than new potatoes with plenty of melting butter. Your description makes me want to go and get the variety and have a go at growing some again this year. Surely we can squeeze a container somewhere on our small garden plot :)

  13. Salad? I'm confused, what does that mean when you're talking potatoes? I tried growing them once years ago...one and done for me. Mint on potatoes...not heard of that before. I do like early potatoes roasted in the oven with garlic and salt and pepper.

    1. Salad potatoes, as the name implies, are those potatoes which are well suited for use in salads. They usually have a waxy flesh which holds together well when diced or sliced, and delicious hot or cold.

  14. Good luck with your spuds. I;ve a few wayward ones that keep popping up in the untidy corner of this garden, but they don't amount to much. Must have originally been planted by previous owners. Lots of tiny tomatoes now & "heaps" of silver beet. Have a lovely weekend & take care. Hugs.
