With the weather forecast looking very uncertain, we decided we'd still head off to the Yorkshire coast yesterday as we'd planned. We didn't know whether we were doing the right thing but as it turned out, it wasn't a bad day at all.
We headed over the moors and took a little detour through Goathland, the fictional village of Aidendfield in Heartbeat.
There's some really pretty cottages here but I'm not sure I'd want to live in such a remote place.
There was a steam train in the station as we passed.
Our next port of call was Whitby, one of my favourite places.
I love all the little streets with an assortment of shops.
Since we last visited Whitby, a full size replica of HMS Discovery has taken up residence in the harbour. The Yorkshire born explorer, Captain James Cook, began his maritime career in Whitby and the Discovery, which he used to sail to Australia and New Zealand, was built there.
We couldn't go to the seaside and not have ice-cream, vanilla for me, I don't think you can beat it.
After a couple of hours in Whitby, we moved along the coast to Sandsend. We love the beach here, it's often deserted and is wonderful for dogs to have a good run around on.
It's also great for beachcombing, we always manage to find lots of sea glass here.
Eleanor found a fossil this time.
The sea was a little cold for Archie's liking, especially as he had been to see the groomer at the start of the week so his fur is very short just now.
He did love the time he spent on the beach though.
He loves having so much open space to run around.
After an hour at Sandsend we got back in the car and headed down the coast to Scarborough.
After wondering if the weather would hold, it started to get a little cloudy and the wind had got up.
Even this gull was having problems negotiating the gusts.
The weather did hold though. It was a lovely day out and after a quick pound in the 2p slots, we headed home.
One little dog was so exhausted that he crashed out on Eleanor's boyfriend and even left half of his tea when we got home.
He slept well last night!
Don't forget, if you haven't already entered my giveaway, you've got until midday on Monday the 9th of September 2019 to do so, just leave a comment on my Ninth Blog Anniversary Giveaway post.
Bless Archie. I suspect that's one tired but very contented little boy.
ReplyDeleteYou've tempted me with your photographs of Whitby and Sandsend. It's been too long, so I'm thinking a visit in the autumn could be in order. I love the fossil Eleanor found. It looks like the sun! X
Archie does love his days out, he gets so excited when he knows he's going in the car, but he's getting old now and we have to slow down a bit for him. A trip to Whitby and Sandsend in the autumn sounds lovely, they're such great places to visit at any time of year.
DeleteWhat a lovely day out!
ReplyDeleteWonderful for little Archie too! It's good to get this tired, doing fun things. :-)
🍁🍂🍎🍂🍁
It doesn't take much nowadays to tire Archie out, but he's happy, he does love trips to the beach.
DeleteWhat a glorious post. I spent a year living just along the coast from Whitby, so many of the scenes in your photos were so familiar. I love sandsend beach we spent many an evening there. It was not very deserted in height of summer from my experience although I did live there over 20 years ago so maybe folks don't visit any more.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely part of the country to live. We always enjoy a trip to Sandsend when we're at the coast as it's such a great beach for dogs. We've always found it pretty much deserted, except for dog walkers.
DeleteYou take the best photos ever ! What a great road trip with history to boot ! I'm with you on the vanilla ice cream. It's my favorite also. I'm living inland in Georgia and haven't seem a fossil rock in almost 20 years. I grew up in Michigan and there were plenty up there. Luv the photo of the pooped doggy. Another great post. Enjoy your weekend !
ReplyDeleteIt takes us about an hour and twenty minutes to get to the coast by car so it's a very doable trip in a day, we're very lucky that nowhere in England is all that far to the coast when you consider some of the places in the US. Another reason for choosing vanilla ice-cream is that I share a little of it with Archie, it's not very good for him but he does love it.
DeleteLove that fossil
ReplyDeleteWe all enjoy beachcombing. Both Mick and Eleanor also found stones with a hole in them this time too.
DeleteLooks like a great way to spend a day...
ReplyDeleteIt was a very enjoyable day. I'm so glad that the rain didn't find us.
DeleteWhat a wonderful day out in such a lovely place. Poor Archie, he might have to have a lie-in tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteArchie spent most of yesterday sleeping, it really knocks him out these days when he's so worn out.
DeleteWhat a lovely day out. We visited Whity, Filey and Scarborough on one of our holidays a few years ago. The NYMR is a beautiful steam train ride. I got thrown out of the 'Aidensfield Arms' when we visited Goathland. I popped in hoping to take some photos and was promptly shooed out unless I was going to buy something! :O Best, Jane x
ReplyDeleteHaha, that made me chuckle. I can just imagine you being escorted off the premises! The Yorkshire coast and North Yorks Moors is a beautiful part of the country, we really enjoy our trips.
DeleteArchie looks exhausted! Looks like a lovely day. CN x
ReplyDeleteHe was totally worn out, but we all had such a wonderful day.
DeleteLovely post and pictures. Good to see that you had an enjoyable day out and about. I agree with you about vanilla ice-cream. xx
ReplyDeleteThe weather turned out much better than expected so I'm really pleased that the forecast didn't put us off. I must admit that I was very tempted to have a second ice-cream in Scarborough but I managed to resist.
DeleteThat looks like a lovely, lovely day out. I am envious of Eleanor's fossil. I had a wonderful holiday in North Yorkshire nine years ago - funnily enough, I was looking at our photos this afternoon - and visited Whitby and Scarborough and took a trip on that railway...and I found a fossilized Devil's Toenail on the beach at Runswick Bay. Happy memories indeed. x
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely stretch of coast, and it's so beautiful inland across the moors too. We always enjoy our days out here.
DeleteIt certainly looks like you had a good day. I would love to make it to Whitby one day :)
ReplyDeleteYou'd love Whitby, I think it's got something for everyone and is steeped in history too.
DeleteWhat a lovely day out, so glad the weather held for most of the day. I love that fossil and as always it's wonderful seeing Archie out with you all. Bless him, he does look worn out. Ours are like that, they suddenly crash!xxx
ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting the weather to be as good as it was so that was a bonus. It doesn't take much to tire Archie out now, he slept well on Friday night and spent all day Saturday recovering.
DeleteWhat a lovely day out - I love the windblown seagull :) I've been to all those places and like them all, especially Sandsend as it's a lovely little place.
ReplyDeleteThe seagull was battling to stay perched on the fence, the wind had certainly whipped up. I love Sandsend, it doesn't have the hustle and bustle of the more livelier seaside towns.
DeleteHi Jo- I love seeing your country and the cottages and villages and the ocean. I love the rock fossil and try to find a rock wherever we go to bring home and remind me off the time I spent somewhere.
ReplyDeleteShame on you for tiring that poor pup out like that---Hahahaha. Have a great week- xo Diana
I remember always collecting stones and pebbles from places we visited when I was a child, I don't know what happened to them. Haha, poor Archie was totally worn out, I think he was glad to finally get back in the car and head home for some rest.
DeleteIt looks like a wonderful adventure for all of you. Archie looks so exhausted from all the fun.
ReplyDeleteWe all enjoyed it, even Archie, though he was extremely worn out.
DeleteSept. 9th
ReplyDeleteRe: your comment on my blog... You don't like the feel of wearing tights either!!!!! So glad I'm not the only one. :-)
🍁🍂🍎🍂🍁
I think there's many of us.
DeleteLooks like an awesome day was had. The seashore looks so pretty and the little villages so quaint and interesting. Would love some day to visit there.
ReplyDeleteSandy's Space
We love this area, it's somewhere we visit often and there's always something new to see.
DeleteWe spend a lot of time on the North Yorkshire Moors - especially as, Martyn likes filming the stean trains - it's a lovely area
ReplyDeleteIt is. We're so lucky to have so much beauty around us.
DeleteAww Archie is just so sweet.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed seeing your photographs, what a lovely day out.
What a great fossil find.
Here's to a good week ahead, although it's started with rain!
All the best Jan
We had a lovely day and so did Archie. It's nice that we're able to take him out and about with us, he loves the beach especially.
DeleteThat's one tired pup! Beautiful scenery.
ReplyDeleteArchie was worn out, though happy and contented.
DeleteWhat a lovely little trip! Thank you for sharing it with those of us who are firmly at home for the next little while. :)
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely to get out and about, we do enjoy having little day trips.
