Netflix

We've been umming and ahhing for quite some time now wondering whether to get Netflix. We've subscribed to Sky for a very long time, mainly for the sport, but we also have our phone line and broadband with them so we do get quite a good deal, but I often hear people mention the programmes they've watched on Netflix that they've enjoyed so we thought we'd give it a go.

So, what I'd like to know from those of you who have Netflix is what programmes can you recommend? I haven't started watching anything yet as we only signed up last night so I'm open to all suggestions.

We've got a one month trial so we'll see how it goes, whether we want to continue with it after that remains to be seen.

  1. We are on Virgin, and are at the point of coming away, so I will watch your comments, it will help us know what to do.

    1. You could always get a free trial like we've done. It can be cancelled after a month and you pay nothing.

  2. Can't help you I'm afraid. Husband would love Netflix (or even a film channel on our BT package), but as our signal strength is so bad, there's so much buffering and it takes so long (hours, literally) to download anything it's just not worth it. People are always talking about watching box sets, so I assume that's popular.

    1. That's a shame. I shall have a look at the box sets and see what's on offer.

  3. Happy viewing. I can't recommend anything as I don't subscribe to it. xx

    1. We've always had Sky so it's new for us, we thought it was worth a try for nothing.

  4. We had Netflix. He watched just about nothing. I watched some.

The neat British tv shows, which we both like, are on Prime, which we have also.

I did enjoy "Tidying with Marie Kondo" which was new on Netflix. And in the past, I have watched some gritty crime series. Very, very gritty! And I have become tired of them.

Even things like the much acclaimed "new Anne" (of Green Gables), I did not watch. Read it was soooooo far from the books, that it was awful.

Their highly acclaimed new "Bird Box"! Yikes! A story, featuring 2 of the greatest fears of humanity... being unable to see your surroundings, and trying to get your children, from danger..... WHY???? Why watch such a horror?????

I admit, I was curious enough, to fast-forward through it, and see the ending. (it's happy of course!) But watch terror? No!

If you really search on Netflix, you will find, that they offer so much crap!!!!! Things, which I would never even try to watch. Ughhhhh....

And the interesting videos on nutrition, minimalism, etc., I can get free, from my library.

As a disenchanted used of Netflix, I suggest you really look around, for the first month.... And then get rid of it, before your free month is up.

And look into Prime! It offers much more, which I like, anyway. Plus your library.

And I am no prude!!! -grin- I really searched and watched a lot of Netflix. And have come away, with the feeling, that I did not want to put their stuff, into my mind, any more.

Will be interesting, to see, what others will comment, on this topic!!!!!!!!!!

    1. An interesting point of view as I've heard such good things about Netflix, but I suppose we're all different and we'll all enjoy different things. I'm very disenchanted by Sky, we only keep it really for the sport which Mick watches otherwise it could go for me, so I'm looking for something better. We'll see how we get on this month.

  5. My son has Netflix so I can watch it through his subscription, I enjoyed watching the new series of Star Trek last year, the new series has just started. I watched quite a few Christmas films over Christmas but to be honest I spend ages scrolling through the endless rubbish and rarely find anything I really want to watch but then I'm very choosy. I prefer Prime too but not enough to get a subscription. Have a great weekend. :) xx

    1. I suppose it's a case of looking to see what you want to watch and seeing if it's worth the subscription. The monthly trial is a good way to work out if it's worth having or not.

  6. I'm afraid I can't help either. We don't have SKY or anything like that. There's enough TV channels without adding more!! We like quiz shows, documentaries, wildlife, educational and a few of the less grisly crime programmes like Vera, New Tricks, Poirot, Maigret and suchlike. Hope you find what you're looking for. Best, Jane x

  7. Can't help I'm afraid, we don't bother with anything these days. We only switch the TV on when there is something that we actually want to watch, which is rare.

    1. I must admit that it's very rare for me to turn on the TV and flick channels, I usually look at the week's viewing in advance and record anything I'm interested in and then watch it later.

    1. Sky was good when we first subscribed, many years ago, but we only really keep it for the sport now. It will be interesting to see how Netflix compares.

  11. We've enjoyed watching movies now and again at our local daughter's house as she subscribed to Netflix at one time. It was for the benefit of the children, but now that one is at university, the other is busy studying for exams and she is busy in an evening doing paperwork for work I think she has unsubscribed. We are behind the times and watch box sets of DVDs and have to pick and choose what we watch on television with inbuilt Freeview so can't really help on this one. At least you can unsubscribe if it's not what you're looking for.

    1. I think it's really good that you get a free trial and also that you pay month by month so you can unsubscribe at any time. You have a contract with Sky which keeps you tied in, especially if you renegotiate each year as we do to keep the cost down.

  12. Great idea to try for a month. We can´t get it over here, but Rebecca and Antoni have it and seem to enjoy various programmes and series on it. xcx

    1. The way people watch programmes these days is very different to how we used to watch them. Gone are the days of waiting a whole week for the next episode, people seem to want to 'binge watch' these days and watch whole series in one go, which you can do with Netflix. I think this month's trial will be interesting.

  13. It's not something we subscribe too so I'm not able to recommend anything.
I wish you happy viewing though, and keep us posted about how you find it.

    Enjoy your weekend.

    All the best Jan

  14. We do have Netflix, but my husband is much more the tv watcher. We haven't had it for long - probably only a year or so - and I don't think I've seen much on it at all. I do enjoy crime/police/detective dramas and we are currently watching Elementary. I wasn't sure if this was on Netflix or not, but apparently it's on Prime.

    1. The trouble these days is that there's probably too much choice when it comes to TV subscriptions, there may be something you want to watch on one provider and other things on others, you could end up spending a huge amount of money each month. I think it's a case of weighing up which has more of the things you watch and stick with them.

  15. Hello Jo, I remember visiting your gardening blog a few years ago - saw you on Tales from a Happy House and thought I would say hello. I've decamped from blogging to Instagram as @occasionalscotland.
We don't have Netflix, and are currently on Sky but without any fancy extra film packages. A bit cross with them, as the only reason we moved from a while on Freeview back to Sky was to access French tv programmes, which I told them when we signed up, and they removed them very shortly after!! Husband is a great film watcher, but I'm not - hate horror, crime, Scandic-Noir, and am bored by most films. I have Prime through doing a university course, where there are French films, but again I find not much else to watch - a huge amount of dross. Eleanor will get free Prime as a student. You could take advantage of that??

    1. Lovely to see you. It's so annoying when you sign up to something only for them to remove the thing you've signed up for. We have Sky for the sport but some of that has been taken away over the time we've had it and moved to BT Sport but Mick keeps it going, it could go for me as I watch very little on Sky. I believe students only get a six month trial on Prime and Eleanor has already taken advantage of that.

  16. The reason I subscribed to Netflix is Designated Survivor (Kiefer Sutherland's current series!), but it's great for new films, TV series and old ones too. It's amazing what you can find on there.

    1. I shall have a look at that. I'm glad I've found someone who's happy with Netflix, I was beginning to wonder, though I've heard so many other people say how they're happy with it and find plenty to watch on there.

  19. Can't help with any recommendations on Netflix as we don't have it. We got rid of our Virgin TV subscriptions over 4 years ago because we thought it was so expensive and the channels were mostly the same sort of programmes or old repeats, and I can honestly say that we haven't missed it at all. Mark does watch some sport but he's not a big sport watcher really. I can go all week and not put our TV on at all when he is away, I usually just watch what I want on catch-up. Hope you find something you enjoy.

    1. I find it the same with Sky, so many old repeats and very few programmes I want to watch but Mick keeps it for the sport. We don't get a bad deal on the TV package as we have our phone and broadband with them too.
