A Blustery Weekend

We didn't do much at the weekend, not only was it cold but it was blowing a gale too. I could have quite happily stayed indoors but when you've got a dog, hunkering down and hibernating isn't an option.

It was the Big Garden Birdwatch over the weekend and though I didn't take part this year, we decided to take Archie to RSPB Fairburn Ings for a walk. There were plenty of birds to be seen there. We just managed a quick walk before the heavens opened and it poured down.

The wind picked up a pace on Sunday so it was a bit foolish of us to head over to Pontefract Castle for a dog walk as it's quite open and we nearly got blown away. We didn't stay long but it gave Archie a chance to stretch his legs and get a bit of fresh air, though it was a bit too fresh for my liking. I didn't take many photos as my hands were nearly dropping off with the cold but you can read more about the castle and its history in A History Tour In Four Parts, a post which I wrote back in 2013.

Today has dawned sunny and bright and the wind has dropped but looking at the forecast I think we're in for a week of frosty and, possibly, icy weather.

  1. It was certainly "fresh" over here too. Good you made the effort to get out, although as you say, with a dog it is not like we have any choice :-). xx

    1. I think it's a good thing really that Archie needs a walk otherwise I think I'd be inclined to shut myself away for the winter. I always feel better if I've been out, even if it's for half an hour.

  2. It blew down here as well, sunny cold morning, we have had an hour outside with Will in the garden.

    1. I don't think it's going to get any warmer any time soon.

  3. The weather's been quite mild here. Occasional morning frost, but otherwise quite mild. We did have high winds and torrential rain over the weekend. I was glad I was working all weekend as there wasn't much else to do otherwise; though poor John gets stuck at home alone with Ginger :( Our Friday morning walk along the prom was quite timely weather wise. Best, jane x

    1. We didn't get that much rain over the weekend, I think the wind blew it all away.

  4. Without the wind it would have been quite nice, and nowhere near as cold. It's the same here today, and a similar forecast. xx

    1. The wind certainly makes it feel colder. It's been a pleasant day today, but still very chilly.

  5. Brrr - your photos certainly reflect the cold, windy weather! We are in for a cold week as well with a possible snowstorm this afternoon/evening. With no dog to walk, I think I will be in hibernation mode :)

    1. I think hibernating is the best thing to do if snow's on the way.

    1. The rain wasn't too bad here, it was the wind which was the worst.

  7. When I see people out, walking pets, in awful weather..... Oh my! Glad we never had a dog. :-)

Our oldest child was very allergic to dogs, but not to cats. So our pets, were cats.

    1. I must admit that I often don't fancy dragging myself out to walk Archie, especially when the weather's bad, but I'm glad once I get myself going, I always feel better for having a walk, even in bad weather. Daniel's allergic to cats, we had one when he was born and he was fine with him but he became allergic after our cat died and when we got another one he ended up having asthma attacks so we had to take her back. He's been fine with Archie though.

  8. We were out in Leicestershire on Sunday and it was perishing. The wind really was biting. Have you been to. St Aidans too?

    1. It was a very cold wind here too. We haven't been to St Aidans, dogs have been poisoned there after drinking the water due to toxins so we've kept away.

  9. You've got to be brave and go with the flow of the weather when dogs need walking. I'm reading a book at the moment about Battersea Dogs Home & they walk them in all weathers. It's quite a good book, called Rescue Me. Take care and stay warm.

    1. We're lucky really, Archie doesn't like bad weather any more than we do so we can get away with a quick walk when the weather's bad. I read Rescue Me a long time ago, it's a lovely book, I wrote about it here:- http://jo-throughthekeyhole.blogspot.com/2011/06/rescue-me.html

    1. That's the good thing about walking in bad weather, there's a nice cosy home waiting for us at the end of the walk.

  11. Good incentive to take Archie out but even nicer to go home and snuggle down and be warm xcx

  12. Well done for getting out and about, even if you were blown about!
Nice lot of ducks in your first photograph …

Keep warm, and have some soup - that's my motto this week!

    All the best Jan

    1. There's always lots of ducks at Fairburn, they're used to people feeding them and they're such greedy things. Soup is just the thing we need in this cold weather.

  13. It was very windy here at the weekend too. I'm glad Archie had a nice run. We have had some bright days this week, but on venturing out I found that it was bitterly cold. Nevertheless I was grateful to get out in the fresh air, go for a short walk, meet people and do some necessary shopping. Now we are stocked up with basic food supplies again we don't have to go out if we get ice and snow. Take care Jo as I know you have to go out and about even in bad weather.

    1. We've got up to a cold and frosty day today and snow is forecast tomorrow but I doubt we'll get much. There's a heavy fog which hasn't lifted yet. I think winter has finally arrived after the mild start.

    1. Sometimes, having Archie is my only reason for going outdoors but I'm usually glad I've made the effort once I'm out there.

  15. The wind was horrific here too so I do admire you venturing out in it! Why do dogs want to go out in such awful weather? xxx

    1. Archie really doesn't like going out in bad weather but it's a case of needs must. It does ease my guilt when I don't want to take him far.
