Red Lion

I've just realised that I haven't yet shown you my amaryllis bloom. This is the variety Red Lion, as you can see it has stunning bright red flowers.

It produced four flowers on the first stem but they're just starting to wither now. These photos were taken about ten days ago and since then, this second bud has grown some more and has now started to open.

They're stunning plants and definitely worth growing for their big impact blooms.

    1. They certainly make an impact once they're flowering.

  2. I always look forward to them blooming, mine always bloom in January when all the glam and glitter is packed away. The red flowers are just stunning.

    1. Eleanor bought me this one for Christmas and I didn't set it going for quite a while, that's why it's a late bloomer. Worth the wait though.

  3. I have never actually had one, I did buy one at Christmas for a gift though, they are stunning, perhaps next time I will get one, do they come again?

    1. I have heard of people keeping them and them blooming again but I've never kept one myself. I was going to have a go at keeping the last one I had but I never did.

  4. Gorgeous! How long does it keep producing blooms for?

    1. It will just open blooms on the two flower stems it's sent up and then that will be it. I've never had one with more than two stems and sometimes you just get one stem.

  11. Amaryllis can give such lovely blooms and yours looks stunning. What a glorious colour too - so lovely to see during the cooler winter months I always think.

At Christmas I always like the Red in Poinsettia too!

But now Spring is here ... just about ... I think the weather is quite changeable still.

    All the best Jan

    1. There's some wonderful flowering plants for the cooler months but none as dramatic as the amaryllis in my opinion. It's lovely and sunny here at the moment but showers are forecast for this afternoon.

  12. I have to admit that I find them a bit creepy - a bit Day of the Triffids!!

    1. Really? It must be the speed at which they grow, just like triffids.

  13. Hey Jo,
I grew a couple of Amaryllis a few years ago. It actually felt like Day Of The Triffids in the conservatory for a while. They kind of loomed up and out at you, and I haven't grown them since!

    1. They do need staking otherwise they're liable to grow all over the place, they're very top heavy. I love the fact that they're so in your face.

  14. They are gorgeous. I have read lots about them but never seen a picture. I can see the attraction now. I have a tendency to kill flowering plants so I will have to settle for the lovely pictures!

    1. They sell amaryllis around Christmas time all potted up and ready to grow, you really can't go wrong with them. All I've done with this is water it once a week and I've been rewarded with these beautiful blooms.

    1. They are, I think it's the sheer size of them but coupled with such a vivid colour as this red, it's a double whammy.

  18. Beautiful :-)
I bought a red lion this year and it didnt produce a flower stem. Neither did the pink one i saved from last year. Most disapointed. Funny you should post this today because i decided that although tbe leaf stems are still healthy and green i would give up and throw them away.

    1. How disappointing. I've read that it can be hard to get saved ones to flower again but the one you bought fresh this year should have definitely flowered for you.

    1. The second flower stem is now blooming away, it's gorgeous. I received the bulb as a Christmas gift and as I didn't set it going for a while the blooms are later than usual.

  23. Wow, it's stunning. I love the deep red colour. Mine has just finished flowering, it's lasted for a good long time and was more of an orangey red. They get so tall, don't they?
