Ribbit Ribbit

We got the first lot of potatoes in to buckets at the weekend, we're growing Arran Pilot and Anya again this year. Mick went off to fetch the watering can to give them a good water and this is what he found.

There was a bit of water in the bottom and a frog had jumped in. Not only did we find the frog but there was also some frogspawn.

We've got a teeny tiny pond in the garden and though there's often frogs in it, there's never been any frogspawn. They obviously prefer our watering cans because when Mick looked in the second one we've got there was a frog in there too.

We carefully tipped both frogs and the frogspawn in to the little pond, I'm sure they'll be much happier in there than in a watering can. When I looked yesterday, the frogs has been busy, not only was there the frogspawn we'd emptied in from the watering can, there were fresh clumps too. You can see some here right on the surface of the water and if you look closely, there's some submerged too right by the side of it.

I'm not sure that this clump on the side of the pond is going to make it though. I tried to slide it in to the water but it's well and truly stuck to the plastic lip of the pond.

Perhaps we'll get some tadpoles this year.

    1. I don't know how the frogs would have got out of the watering cans had we not found them. I do hope that the frogspawn turns in to tadpoles.

  2. How exciting! We get frogs in our garden, we don't have a pond but next door does. Molly, one of our cats is fascinated by them and spends hours searching them out and watching, (making) them jump.

    1. We've always had frogs in the garden even before we got our little pond so I think someone nearby must have a pond in their garden. We used to have a cat who was fascinated by them too, he used to pick them up but he never hurt them. He'd just lay them down and watch them jump about. It must be a cat thing if Molly does it too.

    1. I do too. I've hoped for baby frogs ever since we put the little pond in.

    1. It is. I wasn't sure the frogspawn would survive being moved but I've got higher hopes now that fresh frogspawn has been laid in the pond.

  5. It is amazing that they prefer a watering can to a pond, fingers crossed for the tadpoles.

  6. How exciting! Frogs are one of the many reasons we want to get a pond into our garden - probably not this year, but perhaps next.

    1. My pond is tiny but it's amazing how much wildlife it brings in to the garden. A couple of years ago I found a newt underneath a log I've placed at the side of the pond.

  7. how exciting! On my walk there is standing water on the roadside and we see tadpoles every year. I've been looking this spring and so far nothing yet.

    1. I'm sure you'll see some soon. Frogs tend to go back to the same places year after year to spawn.

  9. I'm sure you'll get some frogs, Jo, there's quite a lot of frogspawn there. That'll be good for the garden! what will Archie make of them? xx

    1. I hope so. Archie will probably run away from them, he's such a wimp.

  10. I hope you get lots of tadpoles - then you can spend hours watching them as they develop! When we lived in Indonesia, we lived in a company compound, which had a swimming pool. The dopey frogs used to leave frogspawn in the pool!!

    1. Tadpoles are such fascinating things, the way they change in to frogs, I do hope we get some so that we can watch them. Urghhhh, I don't suppose many people used that swimming pool once the frogs had done their stuff.

    2. Hi Jo
Don't worry, the pool was cleaned out every morning by the pool boy!

  11. Oh, I hope you get some tadpoles and then some frogs. We've never had a pond but neighbours have and I can remember being out tending the flower beds with frogs jumping around, they certainly surprised me and made me jump - but great to see - yes, they came into ours from next door!

    All the best Jan

    1. Me too. We do get quite a few frogs in the garden even though we've never had frogspawn in the pond before, they do make me jump when they suddenly spring.

    1. I know. I've learnt my lesson now, the watering cans are being left empty and on their sides. I don't want to be responsible for any froggies being trapped, or worse.

  14. Hi Jo,

How exciting for you - hope you have lots of tadpoles and then frogs.
Only seems the other day I used to take the children to a pond and we would watch the tadpoles and then see the frogs - they loved those trips.
    Happy weekend
    Hugs

    1. I'm hoping for an increase in the frog population so that they can help me keep down the number of slugs marauding around my garden. I remember learning about tadpoles at school. We had a tank in the classroom where we could watch them evolve and we too took our kids to different ponds to see them. I'm not sure what it is about tadpoles but kids seem to love them.

  15. How exciting Jo. I haven't any frogspawn in my pond as it's small like yours but we have plans for a bigger one this year so fingers crossed. I hope it develops into tadpoles for you & more excitingly baby frogs xx

    1. Extending your pond will be a great project. I'm a big fan of having water in the garden, even if it's a teeny tiny pond like mine, it still attracts so much wildlife.

  16. Well it must be a good time for frogs all over the place, as we had hundreds of tadpoles in our pond this summer too and saw quite a few of them leave as wee little frogs. Have a good weekend and take care.

    1. We had tiny frogs all over the garden a couple of years ago, they hadn't come from our pond though so I think one of the neighbours must have a pond in their garden. I do hope we get our own this year.

  19. We sometimes get the odd frog in the garden. No idea why as there's no water anywhere near us that I know of. Thomas would love watching the frogspawn to see what happens. We thought about a raised pond a couple of years ago but never got around to doing it. Shame really, I like a bit of water in a garden. xx

    1. I'm not sure what it is which captures children's imaginations where frogspawn is concerned but they all seem fascinated by it. My two loved pond dipping when they were young but we never had frogspawn in our own garden. You could always put a small pond in the garden, ours is only 84cm x 64cm but it's amazing how much wildlife it attracts.
