Eleanor bought me an amaryllis bulb for Christmas, Red Lion, a most stunning scarlet red variety. I didn't set it going until in to the new year but within a couple of days, some fresh green shoots were already showing.
There isn't really very much to see at this stage and there's certainly no clues as to the magnificent flower that will soon emerge.
Once it does get going, it doesn't take long until you see some rapid growth.
Still a while to go yet until I get my beautiful bloom.
Morrisons have some great deals on flowers and plants. I picked up this hyacinth in a pretty little clay pot for just £1.35. I'm looking forward to it blooming as its beautiful scent will perfume the house. My favourite type of air freshener.
I'm not one who has many houseplants, in fact, I've only got orchids, but I do love to have fresh flowers in the house and at this time of year, I love bulbs too.
They are always so fun to watch. I have tulip bulbs on my table, can't wait to see them flower.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Meredith
It's an added attraction with bulbs, watching them break through the soil and grow. I have tulips outside but they're nowhere near flowering yet.
DeleteJust love the pot the hyacinth is in too ...
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing the 'Red Lion' in bloom.
Hope you are having a good weekend
Happy Valentines Day
All the best Jan
The hyacinth pot is lovely, isn't it? Something I can reuse. I'm looking forward to seeing my amaryllis bloom too. Thank you, happy Valentines Day to you too.
DeleteI have never had an Amaryllis, I love the Hyacinth pot, I ended up with one of the other ones, all three choices were really nice, it is worth having for the pot to use again xx
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy growing amaryllis, they're such a huge flower that they really make a statement. I was quite tempted to get the other two on offer at Morrisons, grape hyacinths and tete a tetes, the pots are so lovely.
DeleteSometimes I pick up a flowering plant like the hyacinth rather than a bunch of flowers. They last so much longer.
ReplyDeletexx
That's true, though I don't think flowers from the supermarket do bad, they seem to last quite a while. Hyacinths are a favourite for their scent, I can't wait for it to bloom.
DeleteI look forward to seeing your amaryllis when it flowers. That hyacinth and nice pot were a bargain. Flighty xx
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to the amaryllis flowering, it's growing well up to now. Morrison's plant shop is really good, I got my little fig tree from there, they often have soft fruit bushes and they're very reasonable.
DeleteGood Afternoon Jo, I love Amaryllis flowers, but do you know, I have never had any success. My neighbour bought me a bulb, with the pot and planting material a couple of Christmas' ago. I planted it, cared for it and I was rewarded with lots of green growth, but no flowers. I will cut it back this year as you have and keep my fingers crossed that it flowers this year.
ReplyDeleteMorrison's have some good deals at the moment and your hyacinth will smell glorious once it flowers.
Best Wishes
Daphne
What a shame about your amaryllis, they're really stunning flowers and usually, so easy to grow. We don't shop at Morrisons all the time as our nearest one isn't local but I always get some good deals when I do shop there and I always look in the plant shop as their flowers and plants are very reasonable. I'm looking forward to the hyacinth flowering, I adore the scent.
DeleteMy job this week is to tidy away the last of the leaves on the patio and move my bulbs. We find flowers dont last long due to the kitchen being so warm but love the smell of flowers.
ReplyDeleteThere's always plenty to find to do in the garden, even during the winter months. Perhaps your newly decorated porch may be a good spot for a vase of flowers, and you can enjoy them whilst you work.
DeleteLovely pot. I should get a hyacinth, I do love them.
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely pot, they do grape hyacinths and tete a tetes too, both in decorated pots. I wish I'd bought one of each now.
DeleteMorrisons are great for plants, when I get the chance I like to see what they have. The smell from fresh bulbs is always the best
ReplyDeleteI think Morrisons have such a good selection and the flowers and plants there are always really reasonable. Hyacinths are one of my favourites simply because they smell divine.
DeleteFor us, the Amaryllis will always be known as the "Emma Willis" which is what my oldest daughter, Emma, called it when she was little!
ReplyDeleteThat's so sweet. It's funny how things like this stick, isn't it?
DeleteI bought a really cheap amaryllis and it produced 3 flower spikes, with 10 flowers between them! I've never had more than 1 glower spike before. I love hyacinths but I've not managed to buy any this year yet.
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic, I don't think I've ever had one with three flower spikes before, certainly never ten flowers. I'm late with my hyacinth this year, I'm usually waiting for them to hit the shops but this is the first one I've bought this season.
DeleteLove hyacinths the perfume is lovely. I love free flowers too but only buy flowers now and again. My chrysanthemum didn't flower this year. ;0(
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame about your chrysanthemum. I always look out for reduced flowers when I'm in the supermarket, I used to find quite a lot which had been marked down in price but I'm not as successful in my search just lately. I can't wait for my hyacinth to bloom, I love the scent.
DeleteI bought the red amaryllis but unfortunatly dispite lovely tall leaf stems there is no flower stem :-( i was looking forward to seeing a lovely red bloom too. I planted my pink one from last year agin too and not having any luck with that either. Morrisons had some nice plants this weekend too i treated myself to some tulips, resisted the house plant this time.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why your amaryllis hasn't sent up a flower spike, I haven't had that happen before. I usually discard the bulbs after they've flowered but I should have a go at trying to grow it again next year. I love tulips, so many gorgeous colours to choose from, I'm always spoilt for choice.
DeleteI'm not one for plants inside at all...I usually just end up killing them. I do currently (and amazingly) have 3 house plants though. One is an orchid, one is an aloe vera and the other is a bonsai tree. They all live on the bathroom windowsill and are do surprisingly well whether I remember to water them r not!!
ReplyDeleteI don't keep any long living plants in the house except for my orchids but I do like having bulbs at this time of year. I find orchids are very forgiving, I just leave them when we go on holiday for a fortnight and they've never suffered for it.
DeleteWhen our amaryllis was growing, we swore if you watched it for long enough you would see it grow! It'll be gorgeous when it blooms! :o)
ReplyDeleteThey grow so fast, don't they? I'm looking forward to the bright red blooms appearing.
DeleteWatching the flowers come up is so exciting and it seems to happen so quickly, or at least that's what I recall; it's been a long time since I've had any winter bulbs. And what a bargain - around here, just the bulb would cost more than that and if it comes in a lovely pot, it's triple the price.
ReplyDeleteThey do grow really quickly, they're like triffids. Morrisons is a supermarket and they do some great bargains on flowers and bulbs, you can't go wrong.
DeleteWill be waiting to see your amaryllis flower and also the hyacinth. What a pretty little pot. Hope you get this comment as I'm having a few problems with them appearing, so I'll email about your cross stitch as that one has gone somewhere into the ether. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI think half the beauty of bulbs is the anticipation waiting for them to bloom. I'm sorry you're having problems with your comments again, I haven't received the one you sent on the cross stitch post.
DeleteThanks for the tip, the pot alone is worth the money. My house plant collection is growing, hubby has not yet noticed.
ReplyDeleteYou may be spoilt for choice if you decide to go to Morrisons to buy one, they've got grape hyacinths and tete a tetes too so your house plant collection could swell even further.
DeleteI don't have any house plants but I've always wanted an amaryllis. I meant to buy one last year but forgot xx
ReplyDeleteI like to have bulbs at this time of year but apart from some orchids, I don't have any houseplants either.
DeleteYou will have lots of beautiful flowers and colour!! xx
ReplyDeleteI hope so. I do like having flowers around the house.
DeleteWe haven't got house plants because of the cats, but I've bought an amaryllis or three for my grandparents in the past.
ReplyDeleteWe could never have any plants in the house when we had a cat, luckily Archie leaves them alone.
DeleteWe bought a couple of bowls of hyacinths from s local garden centre and are enjoying the perfume.
ReplyDeleteThey give such a gorgeous scent, I can't wait for mine to flower.
DeleteI bet your amaryllis has sprung up a bit already, they grow very fast don't they? Mine is red too, on the mantelpiece away from the cats. I love hyacinths too, I'll have to look out for some xx
ReplyDeleteIt has, it's growing so quickly. The hyacinth doesn't seem to be doing much at the moment though, I'm sure it will come in to bloom when it's ready.
DeleteI'm going to look for amaryllis next time I'm in Morissons. They do have great deals on plants and flowers. I got two small pots of daffodils this week for just 50p per pot.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure they'll still have amaryllis in now as they're usually out around Christmas time but I'm sure they'll have something to take your fancy, as you say, they have great deals on plants and flowers. That's a great deal you got on your daffodils.
DeleteI'm waiting with anticipation to see the amaryllis when is produces flowers. It has such a great name.
ReplyDeleteMe too. I don't think I've grown a bright red one before, I can't wait to see it.
