Last Saturday, we visited Thornes Park in Wakefield. The main idea was to visit the Walled Garden for a post for my other blog, The Good Life. You can read about it on my Thornes Park In February post. We had Archie with us so after a look around the gardens we decided on a walk around the park. Archie came off his lead and had a good run around but as we neared the lake, we put him back on his lead otherwise he'd have been straight in the water.
It was a cold day and part of the lake was iced over, there looked to be some quite sharp pieces of ice jutting out.
Lots of birds use the lake.
The Canada Geese can get quite aggressive as you pass them, Archie wasn't very keen.
There was a man with his little boy throwing bread for the birds.
The rest of the Canada Geese couldn't come quickly enough when they knew food was around.
There was plenty for everyone.
This isn't a park we usually visit so it was a change to go somewhere different and Archie enjoyed himself.
I shall pop over and read about the garden, sounds interesting. The ice looks like shards of broken glass from a mirror!

The ice did look like bits of glass, I was rather worried that the birds may hurt themselves on it but I'm sure they're a dab hand at avoiding such disasters.
DeleteLooks like you had a lovely time Jo. Great photos too
ReplyDeleteIt makes a nice change to go somewhere different and Archie likes to try different places for his walks too.
DeleteI can not let Ben get anywhere near water off his lead, he is straight in and then becomes stone deaf to all commands to come.
ReplyDeleteArchie's the same. I'd swear he'd find a puddle in a desert, he just loves water.
DeleteLooks a lovely place for a walk!
ReplyDeleteIt is. I enjoyed watching all the birds on the lake.
DeleteJust catching up on your posts and will pop an email through tonight. Sorry about Monty. Talk to you soon. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThank you. It's a week now since we lost Monty and we're still so upset. He was a cheeky bunny and he'll be missed very much.
DeleteIt is really nice in Thornes Park especially in summer. Did you know they are excavating Wakefield castle which is in Thornes park? The work began the other week, they were doing the geophys ( I think that's what its called anyway) and hoping to excavate. It would be great to help out, they were calling for volunteers and I'd love to do it but as always time is against me.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about the excavation work of Wakefield Castle, it sounds as though there's lots going on at Thornes Park. I bet it would be really interesting to get involved.
DeletePlenty of action there as the birds rushed over for the bread! I like the shot of the gulls swooping in, as they do. You had a good walk with Archie despite the cold weather.
ReplyDeleteThere were lots of gulls around the lake, as well as other birds. They always seem to know when food is being handed out and take advantage.
DeleteI love Winter walks as there aren't so many people around, sound a right grump don't I lol x
ReplyDeleteThat's true actually. It's usually us seasoned dog walkers who brave the weather.
DeleteGosh, it must have been very cold to get those great big sheets of ice! A good day for a brisk walk though I am sure! xx
ReplyDeleteIt was funny seeing the birds stood on the ice in the middle of the lake, it looked like they were walking on water. I think a brisk walk on a cold day is good to warm you up.
DeleteI don't blame Archie I generally keep well away from geese as well. Flighty xx
ReplyDeleteThey can be rather aggressive to say the least.
DeleteThose are big birds, I would stay away too! The ice on the pond near our house finally melted, I think it was frozen for nearly 2 weeks. Congratulations on your award in you last post. :)
ReplyDeleteThey are big birds, they can be quite intimidating if they turn on you. Thank you, I'm always pleased when someone thinks I'm worthy of an award.
DeleteLovely to get out and about and blow the cobwebs away, wrapping up warm and perhaps a little toasty treat at the end xcx
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'd get out half as much if I didn't have Archie to walk, it doesn't matter what the weather's like, he still needs to go out. Sometimes I'd rather stay inside where it's warm but it's amazing how glad I feel once I've made the effort.
DeleteGosh it looks cold there, I hope you were all wrapped up warm Jo!
ReplyDeleteWe certainly did. This is when hand made woolies come in to their own.
DeleteLooks like a great place to walk.
ReplyDeleteWe certainly enjoyed it.
DeleteSpoilsports! Poor Archie being kept out of the water! And all for the selfish reason that (I'm guessing) he would shake himself after he came out.... all over you!!! (tee hee)
ReplyDeleteLove the ice sheets!
We're definitely spoilsports, but then who wants a dog who stinks of pond water? Not to mention, as you point out, being covered in it ourselves too.
DeleteI love to see the park, the birds and all the pictures! I'm glad Archie is fine!
ReplyDeleteSandra
It's a lovely place for a walk and Archie likes it there too.
DeleteIt's so nice to get out and about and have a walk - there is always something to see.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
There is. It may have been cold but at least it wasn't raining, a chilly but dry day.
DeleteWe have lots of geese in our local park and have to keep our dogs on their leads near them or they chase the geese! It must have been so cold to ice over... brrrr xx
ReplyDeleteGeese are usually quite good at defending themselves, Archie isn't keen to go near them at all and I have to say that I don't blame him. It was a very cold day but you don't really feel it once you get walking.
DeleteThose geese look rather scary! Nice to visit somewhere different for a change isn't it? I love walled gardens, will pop over and read all about it. x
ReplyDeleteThe geese are rather vicious, I didn't get too close. I enjoy visiting new places, there's so many different places to discover, we're lucky that there's some lovely parks near by.
