Little House In The Big Woods

Little House In The Big Woods is the first book in the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I used to love watching Little House On The Prairie when I was little and have now started collecting each series on DVD but I'd never read the books so I thought it would be nice to do so.

I've so far read Little House In The Big Woods and Little House On The Prairie and I'm half way through On The Banks Of Plum Creek. I'm enjoying reading them very much.

Before I started reading the Little House books, I read One Day by David Nicholls.

After meeting on the 15th of July 1988, the day of their graduation, One Day tells the story of Emma and Dexter with a snapshot of their lives on the same day each year for the next twenty years.

Eleanor's watched the film version of One Day numerous times so I've caught bits of it, but it didn't spoil the book for me.

I'm hoping to find a Kindle in my Christmas stocking this year. It will be handy to use when I'm awake during the night but I'm sure I'll continue to read proper books too.

Don't forget to enter my Sewing Book Giveaway if you haven't already done so. You've got until twelve noon on Saturday the 13th of December 2014 to leave a comment on the appropriate post.

  1. Hope you get your Kindle :}
I've had mine a year after saying I'd never use an e-book reader. I still occasionally read a 'real book' when it's something which doesn't translate (quilt books, gardening and so on) but to my surprise 90% of my reading is now electronic.

    1. I'm pretty sure that it's on Santa's list, I've given out enough hints. I never thought I'd use an e reader either but I wake during the night and don't put the light on for fear of waking Mick, so it will be great for that. Like you, I think I'd prefer the actual book for non fiction, I don't think it will replace every book I buy.

  2. I still have all my Little House books from the 1970s and get them out every now and again to re-read them. Most of them are worn and tatty, but that shows how much I have read them over the years!

    1. They're such lovely books, and suitable for any age. I'm really surprised that I've never read them before, they're certainly keeping my interest and are quite different from the tv series.

  3. You will love all the books I am sure Jo, I have them all and read them again from time to time, my favourite - that you haven't got to yet - is The Long Winter, it is so wonderfully descriptive you can just imagine the scenes playing out. Happy Reading!! xx

    1. The books I've read so far are beautifully written, I can just imagine myself there alongside Laura. It's the sign of a good book when they're read time and time again.

  4. I love the Little House books too. I collected all the series on DVD and occasionally indulge myself with them...particularly the Christmas episodes at this time of year. The Kindle is great and you will get a lot of use from it especially when you are on holiday. There's nothing like a book though!!

    1. I love the Christmas episodes and remember them well from my childhood. I do like the feel of a book in my hands, I don't think a Kindle will appeal to my senses in the same way, but it will be more practical in a number of situations.

  5. It's good to have plenty of books to read at this time of year.
I'm reading about a book or two a month on my eReader but still prefer proper books. Flighty xx

    1. There's a few books on my wish list but I'm waiting for my Kindle now before I buy them. I'm hoping that Santa will leave a gift card with it so that I've got some funds in my account to start me off. I do like proper books still, I don't think you can beat them, but the Kindle will be more practical in certain situations.

    1. I've found the books I've read so far to be quite different from the tv series, but still as enjoyable. It's so interesting reading about how they lived and the books are so descriptive, they answer any questions I have about their way of life. I'm really enjoying them.

    2. I didn't read the Little House books as a child, but rather as an adult. When I was teaching one of the books was part of our grade level's reading curriculum and that got me started. I liked them all.

    5. I just wish I'd found them a long time ago, they're the type of books I'd have really enjoyed as a child.

  7. Did you enjoy 'One Day'? I couldn't decide whether I liked it or not. I suppose quite a lot of the social context rang true because I graduated in 1988 but..... it didn't grip me quite as much as I thought it would. Jx

    1. I did enjoy One Day, though I did wonder if it would be a book which I could really get in to. I'm looking forward to watching the film now.

  8. I hated One Day with a passion. I'd waited to read it for ages and was so disappointed with it. I must look out for the Little House books, though I think I used to have them when I was little. I have just bought myself the WIzard of Oz books so look forward to reading those.

    1. I wasn't sure it was going to be my kind of book but I did enjoy it once it got going. I've seen The Wizard Of Oz so many times but never read the books.

    2. I never even realised that there was more than 1 Oz book!!! Then I found 5 of them. They are on my to read list once I have finished my Christmas makes.

    3. I think it's because we're so used to the film, the books tend to get forgotten. There's so many films I've seen but never read the books, yet the books tend to be better than the films.

  9. I'm thinking of a kindle - but need to get to grips with my mobile phone first. Perhaps next year then?

  10. The Little House books are some of my favorite books of all. My husband loves them too, and we each brought our own childhood set into the marriage. :) I haven't read or watched One Day yet but I remember when the book came out and I've also noticed that the movie is on Netflix's streaming options so I may watch it one evening soon.

    1. I can see why the Little House books are some of your favourites. I've only caught bits of the film of One Day but now I've read the book, I'd like to watch it properly.

  11. I hope Santa's paying attention, Jo. I love my Kindle - although I can't read mine in the middle of the night as it doesn't have a light in it. If you do get one, be sure to check out the free books. I hardly ever pay for books these days. Okay, some of them aren't that great but ... free? Fabulous! :o)

    1. I'm sure he is, I've been a good girl this year. I did say that I wanted an e reader with a light in for middle of the night reading so I hope it's what I asked for. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can get for free.

  16. I loved the Little House books when I was a girl and bought the set for Miss.M for Christmas last year. Although she's now 10, she still likes being read to, so I read a chapter a night to her. I'm enjoying them just as much this time round and it's nice to hear that you are too.

I wish that schools made children read the classics still like we had to when we were young, I have kids in my class that had never even heard of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn!
Much love to you Jo and Merry Christmas! Tammy xx

    1. They don't do too badly in school regarding the classics here. Obviously, they don't get round to introducing them all but I think they make a pretty good selection. It's just a shame that so many children don't grow up with a love of reading, my own two included. They were happy enough to be read to but lost interest when they started reading themselves, even though they were reading before they started school. Thank you and Merry Christmas to you too.
