On The Go Update

It was last year when I told you about my On The Go Blanket and it hasn't been mentioned since then. That's because it hasn't grown very much.

The idea of this blanket is that it's made up of small granny squares which are very portable and easy to carry around, so it's an ideal project for on the go. None of the squares I crochet for this blanket will be made at home, it's a project that I can take from place to place and work on when I'm out and about. Once it's all made up, it will remind me of some happy days out.

This was the project which I took with me on holiday this year, and though I didn't get many squares made, I did crochet a few. I'm now at a total of fifty squares.

I'm loving the colours which I chose for this blanket, Meadow, Grape, Pomegranate, Soft Peach, Lemon, Cloud Blue and Cream. They're all from the Stylecraft Special DK range.

I can see this becoming a very long term project but I don't mind, it's great to have something there ready to just pick up and go with when I'm heading out the door.

Eleanor's ripple blanket is still on the hook too. It's been neglected lately as I've had my knitting needles out rather than my crochet hook but I'm starting to feel a tug to return to crochet so it may get a little attention this week.

I used to be a one project at a time kind of girl but that changed when I learnt to crochet, I'd have one knitting project and one crochet project going but now I seem to have at least a couple of each. I suppose it's good to have different things to pick up and go with as the mood takes me.

  1. I love your granny squares and I've yet to master the ripple. I can't get the double together, maybe I should practice again. Amanda x

    1. I love the ripple pattern, it's so easy once you get going with it so do give it another go. I'm using the one from Attic24, Lucy's written up a great tutorial for it.

    2. Like Jo says, give the ripple another go. Once you get it (and as long as you keep counting) it just takes off.

    3. It really does, and it's so relaxing once you get in to the rhythm of it.

  2. I only have one knitting project on the go but I do confess to having more than one crochet one on the go. Too many ideas and not enough hours in the day and work does get in the way too.

    1. I know exactly what you mean, there's so many things I want to have a go at but not enough time, and I don't work. If only we could magic a couple of extra hours in to our days.

    1. I think the colours go really well together, I'm sure it will look lovely once it's all joined together.

  4. The granny squares are lovely - I really like the colours you've used! I think it's nice having a long-term project like that on the go, no pressure and pure enjoyment!

    1. I'm not fast at either crochet or knitting so most of my projects are long term ones. I like it that way though, I like to take my time over things and savour each stitch, it makes the finished item so much more special somehow.

  5. Those little granny squares are very pretty, but I dont envy you putting them together. I do think it will look stunning when its finished though. I love how you have done your ripple blanket in random rows, mine are in 2 row stripes, we must have similar taste in colours :-) i need to do some more on mine....its getting heavy and it was a bit too warm to handle when we were having that heat wave. I used Lucy's tutorial too. x

    1. I do think they'll take some putting together, but I don't mind really, it will keep me busy. The ripple blanket isn't quite random, I've used interlocking stripes but the colours are repeated throughout. Eleanor chose the colours for her blanket and I wasn't really sure about them at the time but I actually think they go really well together now I can see them crocheted up.

  6. I am useless at keeping to just one project. I have a BIG thing like a blanket that I do and then a lot of little pieces that fit around. I found when I was rippling or granny striping that I would take time off, especially in the summer, to avoid sitting under something so warm. I should be making more granny squares now but instead I'M TALKING TO YOU!!!!
I love the idea of a grab and go project. Perhaps I should start crocheting snowflakes or stars for the dreaded C word every time I'm out?

    1. I think it's great to have a larger project on the go but smaller ones which get finished quicker too, I suppose it keeps the interest there for the larger one if you can see some smaller ones getting finished, if that makes sense. Eleanor's blanket is rather large now so it's quite warm to sit under but the weather has come cooler so I may just get it out again this week. Snowflakes would be a great grab and go project, I've been meaning to have a go at them for ages but have never got round to it yet, I always seem to have something else on the hook.

  7. What a good plan to have an on the go project. My chunky blanket started off like that and then I got impatient to see what it was going to look like!
Is Eleanor's blanket made from Stylecraft Special DK too?

    1. I found I was always looking for something portable to take with me on outings, having something solely for such occasions saves me having to think what I'm going to take. Eleanor's blanket is made from Stylecraft Special DK too, all my blankets have been made in the same yarn, I'm a big fan of it.

  8. I like the idea of only doing your granny squares when you're out and about. When it's done it'll bring back all the memories of the places you visited too. That's ingenious! :o)

    1. It will be comforting being wrapped up in all those happy memories, though I think I'm jumping ahead of myself, it will be some time before it's ready to be made in to a blanket.

  9. Both of your crochet projects are looking good and I love the colours in both. Our colours here of late seem to have been very dreary. I might have to Google that Stylecraft wool range. Having a few things on the go at least gives a variety of what you feel like doing at the time. I've always got lots on the go and do finish most. (giggle). Take care.

    1. Stylecraft is a good, budget yarn. It's acrylic but isn't so squeaky as some other acrylic yarns I've used, in fact, it's lovely and soft and great for blankets as it's machine washable.

  10. I like to have a few projects on the go. I've just ticked two off my list, but there's plenty more.

    1. The ripple blanket is now large enough to keep me warm whilst I'm crocheting. It will be a good winter project if I don't get it finished before then.

  12. I am late reading through my blog list, thanks to a lazy day yesterday, and you have just jogged my memory. I have a bag full of crocheted squares ready to sew together, they were intended for kaitlyn. I have made her another blanket and a quilt so maybe these will be sewn into a blanket for the Red Cross. It is a bit cooler now so I will dig them out and make a start.

    1. I usually crochet my squares together. It's not my favourite part of the project but nice to see the blanket come together. I'm sure the Red Cross will be very appreciative of a beautiful crochet blanket.

    1. I'm pleased with the colours in my On The Go blanket, I think they go well together. I'm really enjoying making the ripple blanket, it's my second one and I'm not tired of the pattern yet, I'm sure there'll be another one after this.

    1. They're both so different in pattern and colour but I'm enjoying making both. Eleanor chose the colours for her blanket herself and I think she's done a good job.

  15. I love both your projects, gorgeous colours. I too have gone from knitting to crochet this week. My mum is getting a new puppy so I've knitted her a blanket for her but decided to crochet the second one as it grows so much faster!

    1. Crochet certainly does grow quicker than knitting. I've crocheted a blanket for Archie in the past and it's still going strong, the Stylecraft Special DK washes well and wears well too.

    1. It's great to have a project I can just take with me wherever I go. I've been known to start something new just so that I have something portable to carry with me so this solves the problem.

    1. It's convenient to have something ready to take with me when we go out. I wish I was able to crochet in the car as the long journey to Cornwall wouldn't have been so boring, but I have to look out of the window otherwise I feel nauseous.
