Ghostly Goings On

Eleanor and I went to see Ghost The Musical on Thursday evening. To be honest, it wasn't a show I was particularly keen on seeing, but Eleanor had been wanting to see it for a while so we bought the tickets as part of her Christmas present last year. I love the film but wasn't bothered about seeing it live on stage. It turned out to be a fantastic show and I'm so pleased that I got tickets.

The lighting, special effects and stage trickery were amazing. The film has people walking through doors, objects moving of their own accord and spirits leaving bodies, and I wondered how on Earth it could be recreated on the stage, but it was fantastic, all these things happened, and more, which left me open mouthed.

The acting and singing was excellent. In my opinion, the star of the show was Wendy Mae Brown who took the role of Oda Mae Brown. She brought the character to life just as Whoopi Goldberg had done in the film. She had the audience in fits of laughter.

The show was on at The Grand Theatre in Leeds. When I posted last month about going to see Blood Brothers there, I had a comment about the inside of the theatre. I had intended to take some photos so that you could see how beautiful it is, but even before the show and during the interval, the lights were so low that taking any decent photos was out of the question. Eleanor managed to snap this one of the stage before the performance though.

Eleanor loved the show too, she hasn't stopped talking about it since. If you get a chance to go, I would definitely recommend it.

  1. Another great night out at the theatre!
I was wondering how it would transfer to the stage, but from what you say it sounds like they did everything wonderfully well.
Glad you both enjoyed it so much.

    1. I was really surprised at how well thought out the stage version is. I'd definitely see it again and can wholeheartedly recommend it.

  2. It sounds fantastic. Ghost is one of our favourite films. Tonight I'm going to see KL's boyfriend in Schindler The Musical which has been written by one of the musical theatre students at his uni. Apparently people were in tears after watching it on the opening night, so I will make sure I have plenty of tissues in my bag!

    1. It must have been good as Eleanor now prefers the show to the film. I hope you have a wonderful time tonight, there are some really talented people out there who, as yet, are undiscovered, yet they have a fantastic talent. It sounds as though this student is one of them. Enjoy the show.

  3. Like you I have been a bit apprehensive about going to see this one but you may have changed my mind! What I would really love to see is Billy Elliott. I may try and get some tickets as aChristmas treat!

    1. I think you'd like it. I've never seen Billy Elliott and it's one I've never really fancied, though like Ghost, I'd probably really enjoy it if I saw it.

    1. I know what you mean, tickets can be so expensive, yet the theatre is something I love so I do try to go when I can. We're going to see Priscilla the following week, I'm really looking forward to it. I hope you have a great time.

  5. I liked the film, so I would probably love the musical version if it is that good, but I doubt know whether we'd ever get it here in Oz. You must try and get some photos of the theatre maybe in daylight hours. Glad Eleanor liked it too.

    1. I can only get photos of the inside of the theatre when we go to a show, and it's usually pretty dark then. I'll have to see if I manage any better ones when we go next time.

  7. It sounds like you had a great time. There must have been huge technical challenges in bringing this story to the stage! Jx

    1. It was very clever how everything was done, nothing was missed out, not even the potter's wheel. We had a fantastic time.

  8. It sounds fabulous ... the trickery that is possible on the stage never ceases to amaze me, but of course the phrase 'smoke and mirrors' had it's origins in the performing arts :)

    1. The trickery was fabulous, I thought they'd miss out lots of the ghostly effects, but they managed them brilliantly.

    1. It was excellent. The film was on tv again the other night, we watched a bit of it, but Eleanor didn't think it was as good as the show.

    1. I usually know one or two of the actors when I go to see shows, but I hadn't heard of any of them who were in Ghost but they were all really good. It was a brilliant show.

  12. This was the first film I saw with my DH as an official couple. I asked him out and it was lovely.... better than Rambo or Terminator as a 'romantic memory'. The musical sounds excellent, too. If only....

    1. What a lovely memory. The first film I saw with Mick was Three Men and a Baby, any man willing to sit through that drivel is a keeper.
