Reductions

The timing for my supermarket shop on Sunday was spot on, I arrived just in time to coincide with the meat being reduced.

I came home with lots of bargains, three pieces of brisket at £3.86, £2.97 and £2.96, two packs of chicken breasts at £2.68 each, a pork joint at £1.41, pork fillet at £2.84 and two pork chops at £1.72. The total cost was £21.12 but should have been £34.65, so I saved £13.53.

We had the least expensive piece of brisket for tea on Monday and there was plenty enough for all four of us, with some left over. Brisket is one of the least tender cuts of beef, so it's important to cook it slowly, but cooked properly it's one of the most tastiest cuts. I remember watching Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall cooking a piece of brisket on River Cottage alongside a more expensive cut of beef. I remember him saying that if he could only taste one, it would be the brisket as the flavour is so much better.

We've only recently started eating pork as a family as Mick has never been very keen on it. I did a pork casserole a couple of weeks ago which he really enjoyed so he's happy to have it more often now.

I'll see if I can get the timing for my shop just right again this week, who knows what I'll come home with.

  2. Very well timed indeed. I try and time it just right at our local Co op as they tend to do some good reductions. Good luck for this weeks shop.

  5. That's a really good haul of bargains! Meat has become so expensive that it's great when you 'hit it right' for reductions. My Mum worked for M+S when I was a kid so I was brought up on 'sell by' meat and cakes! Jx

  6. I love a bargain! We have a great shop near us (you have to have a card and they are strict about dishing them out these days) but it is bargain central. All meat is always half price and you can often get immense bargains on Waitrose meat.xx

  7. Who doesn't love a bargain.
I was trying to convert your pounds prices to our Canadian dollar to compare value but it got lost in translation.
    Enjoy your weekend!

  11. Were your bargains free range stuff? Sorry, but as you refered to Hugh F-W and he quite rightly champions free range meat...I was wondering.

  12. Thank you for all your comments.

Jan - I used to buy lots of things from M&S but it's so expensive. It's great if you can pick up some bargains though.

Mum - You can be sure about that.

Flighty - If it's things you're going to use, then it's still a bargain.

Compostwoman - I made reference to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in regard to his comment about the different cuts of beef. People often think more expensive cuts are the tastiest, but it's often not so.

  13. Ah - I understand. Yes cheaper cuts of meat and slow cooking/a slow cooker can transform even the toughest cuts!

Congrats to your daughter on the Distinction in her singing

  16. I'm always on the lookout for staff with their reduction stickers, Victoria. I didn't manage many bargains today, but did pick up some strawberries, yum!
