I love knitting baby clothes, so when I found out that a neighbour was expecting, I was only too glad to cast on, and cast on I did, 243 stitches! The jacket is knit in one piece up to the armholes, so there's a lot of stitches. It saves on sewing up though, which is my pet hate.
Matinee jackets don't seem to be very fashionable these days. This pattern is from Sirdar and I remember knitting it when I was in my teens for various members of the family when they had their babies. I still think it's pretty.
I hope the neighbour likes it. She's only sixteen and it was only a couple of years ago that she used to come and call to play with Eleanor, and now she's a mum herself.
I think it's lovely. Call me old fashioned but I think babies should be dressed like babies. I've seen newborns in jeans and denim jackets which can't feel nice against their delicate skin, but my pet hate is shoes on babies.I used to love knitting matinee coats and cardis. J's niece had a baby 3 months ago but I didn't knit for her as she wouldn't have appreciated it :(
ReplyDeleteThat's so pretty! I love the traditional, delicate baby patterns... especially for a baby born in the summer months. Isn't it lovely to have a bit of summer weather?! Jx
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Looks so soft and cuddly. I love the traditional patterns too. I'll have to look up some for our two new grandbabies due in the next few months.
ReplyDeleteI never did knit a baby top when I was knitting back in the day. The delicate gorgeous top that you made took tiny needles and small thread and a lot of work. What a beautiful intricate pattern. Well done, Jo!
ReplyDeleteThat is lovely and I'm sure that Mum will be very happy to put baby in it - I would

That is a gorgeous cardigan! My little one had one like that in yello and it was my fav piece of clothing for her :-)
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful J and will make a lovely gift.
ReplyDeleteSure hope you're enjoying all that Spring has to offer.

Just catching up on your previous posts Jo.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to your son with his AS levels.
Loved No.1 Detective agency (of course-set in Botswana). Is Sister gory?
Great Lunch Ideas. And to have lost so much weight is amazing. You are an inspiration!

oh my gosh..that is a beautiful perfect gift!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your lovely comments, they're all very much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteSft - Sister isn't gory. It's a book which makes you want to read on to find out what's happened and why. Do look out for it, I'm sure you'd enjoy it.
I love a proper matinee jacket. When I design baby stuff I always try to take a classic silhouette and give it a modern twist. And to knit in a way that means as few seams as possible :D
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed knitting this, Annie. In fact, I can't wait to knit another baby garment, though I'll look out for something with very few seams.
ReplyDeleteKnitted baby clothes are always adorable!
ReplyDeleteI told my cousin I'm going to knit her some booties (the extend of my knitting capabilities!) for her baby due end of the year!

This matinee jacket is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. What knitting talent you have.

Do remember to show us the booties when you've done them, Victoria. I love knitting baby garments.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stephanie, what a lovely comment.
