The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency

The book I'm reading for April is The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. It's taken me a while to get in to it, but I'm really pleased that I have because I bought the second book in this series from the charity shop a couple of weeks ago.

I'm aiming to read at least one book each month. I mainly read in bed, but after a chapter I can feel my eyes closing so I don't finish books very quickly. Having said that, I took Eleanor and her friend swimming this morning and it made such a change, whilst they were in the pool, to sit in the spectators gallery and get my head in a book. It's a very easy to read book, once you've got in to it, so it shouldn't take me long to finish it now.

The book I read for March was The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I really enjoyed this book and was quite sad when I finished it, but I'm looking forward to watching the film now.

I think I'll take a trip to the video rental shop soon.

  1. Loved THE HELP too! Brilliant story.

Also liked the NO.1 Ladies Detective Agency too. Read loads of the series now.

And of course it's about Botswana! Yeah!

    Great choices Jo!

  2. Hi Jo, I enjoyed reading the No1 ladies detective agency book a while ago now.I have just finished The Prisoner of Tehran and it was also enjoyable if disturbing. It made me realise how lucky we women are living in a free society, the poor women in Iran(and certain other countries in the middle east) are treated appallingly.

  3. I love the Help, would like to see the movie. I watched the first one of the No1 Ladies Detective Agency when it was on TV and liked it but didn't keep up with it for some reason which is a shame. We are always getting this series in at the charity shop, let me know if you want some of the others and I'll keep my eye out for you.

  4. I also love to read in bed and sometimes it takes 3 weeks to finish a book but it's the best way to quiet the mind so I can go to sleep.

  5. I read while I was waiting at the garage for the car to be MOTd last week. It was wonderful not to feel that I should be doing something else instead!

  6. I haven't read either of these books so will definitely look out for them. I have read Alexander MaCall Smith's series that is set in Scotland. That was fun! Jx

  7. Hello Jo:
The Ladies' Detective Agency Series is a charming read. Alexander Mc Call Smith writes with such tenderness that one cannot help but feel warmly towards the characters and become involved in their lives and their concerns. The books also give a wonderful sense of place, so much so that one can easily be transported there as the pages turn!

We have discovered your most interesting blog quite by chance through Jan at Stand and Stare. We have signed ourselves as Followers.

  8. I watched the tv series and thoroughly enjoyed it - haven't read the books yet but have indulged in some other A.McCall-Smith books - his writing is so easy to read.

  9. Great book choice Jo, although I've never read 'The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency' myself, the stories were aired on Radio four not too long ago and I enjoyed them immensely........I shoul really find time to read more, it's always such a great way to escape for a while. xx

  10. Thank you for all your comments.

Anne - The Prisoner of Tehran sounds to be a thought provoking read. I read something similar many years ago and it does make you appreciate how we live.

Lisa - Thanks for the offer. I managed to pick up another three books from the series in the charity shops yesterday, but I'll let you know if I get stuck and can't manage to find any.

Jane and Lance - Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment. This is the first book I've read by Alexander McCall Smith and I have to admit that it took me a while to get in to it, but now that I have I'm really enjoying it.

  11. Great choices - I enjoyed both of them myself.

  12. I think I must be one of the last people to read these books, Paulette. I'm really enjoying them.
