Summer Flowers

We're back from our travels. I'll tell you all about our holiday in my next post but in the meantime I'd like to share some beautiful blooms from my garden. These were taken before our holiday but I just didn't get round to posting about them before we left so I thought I'd do that now.

The star of my summer garden is the astrantia. I just love these flowers, like little pin cushions. These plants come in white or cream and shades from the palest pink through to the deepest purple. I just love the white ones. I don't give them much attention, they care for themselves and reward me with these beautiful flowers.

After experiencing the scent of daphne when we went In Search Of Snowdrops at Dunham Massey earlier this year, I couldn't resist buying a plant for the garden. Many varieties flower from late winter to late spring but I did a bit of research and came up with Pink Fragrance which has a long flowering season, often from April to October. This is the plant in June, the scent is divine. I've planted this in a container so it can be enjoyed on the patio.

I always plant scarlet geraniums at each side of my back door. The intense red of the flowers are set off by the tall blue glazed pots I plant them in. This one was an extra I had no room for so it was popped in a different pot and displayed with some of my other potted plants. The colour is doing weird things to my camera, most likely because it's so vivid.

Peonies can be quite temperamental when it comes to them being moved, they can die but even if they live, they may not flower for a year or two afterwards, so I was surprised that after moving my peony in the autumn it has rewarded me with not one but quite a few blooms this year. No sulking from being transplanted at all.

I have a plant stand on the patio where I display lots of little different pots of flowers. This one is erodium Bishops Form and it flowers all summer long. You can see the little hedgehog pot hanger hanging onto the side which my friend Maggie from Needles, Greens and Everyday Things bought me in my Twelve Day Advent.

Another from the plant stand is this alchemilla Connoisseurs Choice. A cousin to the more common Alchemilla Mollis, this one is a dwarf variety and slow growing. Ideal for a small pot or container.

Just a few of the things I have growing in my garden, it's a joy to see things flowering throughout the different seasons, though we returned to absolute carnage, the sun and heat has done its worst and many things have suffered. We're now trying to nurture everything back to health. Time will tell if we succeed.

  5. I know what you mean about the garden carnage after coming back from holiday ourselves. I'm glad I took photos before we went. Most things have been salvageable but others.. I'll have to wait and see.
I love your Astrantia. It is a lovely plant. I have 3 different pink/purple varieties. The Daphne is looking lovely too and what good news that the Peony has not sulked and instead put on a pretty pink show for you.
Now I'm looking forward to hearing about your adventures away from home. Enjoy the rest of your week.

    1. I had some lovely bedding plants in pots at the front, they've all gone straight in the bin, too far gone. It's touch and go with some other plants, it's funny how some things fare better than others. I love astrantias, I'd like a pink or purple variety to go with this white one. I took so many photos on holiday, it's taking some time to go through them but I'll be back with a post about our travels.

    1. Some of these were casualties of the sun and heat while we were away so they're currently being given some TLC and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can manage to revive them. Thank you, we had a wonderful holiday.

  7. This summer has really been one for the record books, hasn't it??? Your garden flowers do look lovely though.

My day lilies already died back and Steve mowed them over. I should get another round of blooms in a few weeks. The hydrangea are going great guns. The hibiscus is just getting started.

Everything else is resting until next spring.

    1. There seems to be records broken every year now, we're getting more and more heatwaves. I bought a new hydrangea this year which has suffered whilst we've been away, not sure if I'll be able to revive that one, time will tell. I've never grown day lilies, it's nice when flowers give you a second flush of blooms.

  8. Such an interesting and lovely selection, Jo. The heat has been awful for plants and animals (as well as some humans!). I hope the ones affected will survive for you.
    Best wishes

    1. I'm not sure whether everything will survive, I had some bedding plants in pots at the front of the house which went straight in the bin, I'm not so bothered about those but there's a couple of plants I'm hoping aren't too far gone and which I can nurse back to health.

    1. Astrantias are one of my favourite flowers, they don't need very much in the way of care yet reward you with such beautiful flowers. They're a wonderful addition to the garden.

  11. Lovely display, considering this heat! I shall be looking for astrantia & daphne for my garden next spring. I heard Monty say that he doesn't water plants in the soil, just pots. If we hadn't watered our plants in the garden soil they'd definitely be frazzled by now!

    1. We're applying organic matter to our garden each autumn in the hope of improving the soil, in the meantime we water, not always but definitely in this heat.

    1. My garden isn't performing nearly so well now after leaving it for a fortnight during a heatwave. Still, things are beginning to look up, the plants have been well cared for this week and are beginning to spring back to life again.
