At the beginning of last year I made a decision to track the yarn coming into my house against the yarn I used up. I do have quite a large yarn stash and I was curious to know whether I was using more than I was acquiring. I'm not going to say buying as I also receive yarn as gifts, I've been known to win yarn in giveaways and knitalongs too.
So at the end of the year I added together the amount of yarn which had come into the house and found that totalled 2590 grams. Goodness, I'd have never guessed it would amount to that. When I added up what I'd used it came to 1152 grams. That means there's an extra 1438 grams in the house to begin 2026 than there was when 2025 began. Ooops.
Guess what, I don't care, haha. Collecting yarn is a hobby in itself, all that beautiful hand dyed yarn, though I'm rather partial to commercial yarn too, there's plenty of that in my stash. I wasn't trying to use more than I acquired, I was just interested to see what the result would be. I think I'll do it again and see what the figures are this year.
You have some nice brands and colours there, I see loads of shades of green, a colour I love, it was a dangerous study to make, I'm glad you added the 'haha', it's lovely to fancy to knit something and check to find you have the perfect yarn to use. I am trying to use up my odd bits and balls, my next post is a start of a new project.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have thought I'd gravitate towards greens but I have lots in my stash, blue is my colour really yet I don't have so much of that. Yes, it's nice to have just the right yarn already in stash when I want to start a project.
DeleteThey're a pleasure to you and I'm sure you will use them all. Such lovely yarns.
ReplyDeleteMy beautiful skeins are just as pleasurable as special trinkets, though I may never get round to using up all my stash, it's vast.
Deletemy weakness is anything to do with watercolours, art books and paintbrushes, I smuggle them in (so even I don't know how much I am caching - haha) but - like your wool stash, it brings me pleasure and I suspect it is not going to stop any time soon.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is it's just so hard to resist, so why try? haha. I know other hobbies cost so much more so I try not to dwell on how much I'm spending, it's a small amount compared to the pleasure it brings.
DeleteYou've got some lovely colours there, I particularly like the lilac.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I have so many colours in my stash yet never quite the right one when I come to search for something specific, Sod's law.
DeleteWhat a comforting hoard! I've got my eye on that dusky pink.
ReplyDeleteI've got quite a few different pinks, all so very pretty.
DeleteIs that ALL your yarn? I would say you've been quite restrained. I think a trip to the yarn store might be in order. LOL In any case --- lovely stash!
ReplyDeleteNo no no, that is not all my yarn, haha. That is a very small percentage of my stash. I may have to pull it all out one day and confess, though it would take quite some time.
DeleteI'm on a "buy no yarn in 2026" drive, as I'm fairly sure my yarn stash will outlive me.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with that. Although I would like to use up some of what I've already got, I'm just not strong willed enough to make no purchases at all, haha.
DeleteHa! Easily done. You can always build an extension - the wool room! All those lovely colours, who can resist.
ReplyDeleteMick won't thank you for putting ideas in my head, haha. I certainly can't resist beautiful yarn, that's for sure.
DeleteBuying supplies is an addiction, certainly one I am familiar with, but not as damaging as some addictions (except to the bank balance!)! Using what I have is my goal for this year and 'one in, one out' also. However, as you use your yarn supplies, it's not a problem for you, at all!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes
Ellie
I'm hoping to use more than I buy this year but we'll see what the figures are at the end of the year, I'm not promising anything, haha.
DeleteI might just keep track of my yarn in and out this year. I am trying to use what I have but I can't resist some pretty yarn. I would also be interested in knowing if I use more from my stash or more of what I've bought in the year.
ReplyDeleteYes, that would be interesting to know too, I may keep a note of that too this year.
DeleteThat's a whole lotta yarn but you have used a whole lotta yarn, too. Happy knitting/crocheting! Diana
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to use more this year. I've got a big blanket due to be finished soon so that will give me a head start.
DeleteWhat a good idea. I love the look of some of those skeins. My finger is just about to purchase another large bagful hee hee. B x
ReplyDeleteOnline shopping is just too easy, isn't it. I'm sure we wouldn't buy quite so much if we could only buy from actual shops.
DeleteYou have some nice colors.
ReplyDeleteI've got a good selection of colours and shades yet there's never the exact one I need when I come to start a project, haha.
DeleteI'm a bit like that with stationery... Somehow I tend to manage to buy more than I use (especially ink and cards!).
ReplyDeleteI can understand the stationery addiction, I could quite easily begin a stationery stash too.
DeleteYou have lots of beautiful yarn there, Jo. It is very satisfying knowing that you already have yarn for a project but it is always fun to buy more yarn loveliness.
ReplyDeleteI'm very lucky to have a beautiful yarn stash, it's a pretty collection, but there's always room for more, haha.
DeleteI love this idea! 🧶✨ Tracking your yarn like that is such a clever way to see how your stash is really growing — and it’s great that you’re including gifts and giveaway wins, not just purchases. It makes the whole process fun and insightful, and I’m curious to see what your numbers reveal! 💛

I've always loved facts and statistics so it's fascinating for me to track my stash in this way.
DeleteI also enjoy looking at my yarn pile and thinking of the possibilities. Yours is lovely, makes my fingers tingle.

I love to just look at it all, it's so pretty, but the possibilities of what it could become are endless.
DeleteHello! Just the picture itself makes me happy! It's so colorful! You are right, collecting pretty yarn is a hobby in itself! I like to collect pretty stationery. I have a whole drawer full!
ReplyDeleteI've always loved stationery but I've managed not to accumulate too much of it, that's definitely another rabbit hole I could disappear down.
DeleteYarn is so fun to buy and use and now that I'm back into sewing, it's fabric. In fact, I just took a small inventory of what fabric I have and what projects need finished. But there's something about going out and finding good deals on fabric (and yarn), for sure.
ReplyDeleteI did a declutter of my yarn this past week and 50% went to the donation store because I find the polyester messes with my hands too much and pills when done. So I kept the cotton that I loved the most and handed the rest off.
No declutter of fabric at this time. All of it is ear marked.
So fun to be creative. Wishing you a wonderful weekend ahead. Cheers, Ivy.
I have a small stash of fabric, even though I don't sew, haha. Well, you never know, do you. I find it hard to declutter yarn, that's why I try and use all my scraps, though I think scrappy projects are rather fun and they're always so colourful and jolly.
