What I'm Watching - November 2019

TV and film that I've been watching this month.

I watched both season 1 and season 2 of The Crown earlier this year and since then I've been looking forward to the release of season 3. It's finally here! Olivia Coleman has succeeded Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II and Tobias Menzies has taken over the role of Prince Philip. I'm trying not to binge watch so that I can string out the new series and so far I've watched two episodes and I've enjoyed them as much as the earlier ones. The new cast have taken on their roles well as we embark on a new era for the monarchy in this third series.

Cold Call is a four part mini series which was shown on consecutive nights this past week. Sally Lindsay stars as June, a woman who becomes the victim of a cold call scam. It was frightening to see how easy it is for these fraudsters to get people to believe in their rackets. It was a bit far fetched and a ridiculous final episode, but I thought it had a good plot and I did enjoy it.

I'm not a lover of sci-fi but I saw that War of the Worlds had been remade as a mini series so decided to give it a go. I began watching but it soon became apparent that even in this format it just wasn't for me. I think Mick will watch it though, it's much more his genre.

Mick was visiting my dad in hospital last Sunday (by the way he's home now and doing well, thank you for all your good wishes for him), and Eleanor was out with friends so I had the house to myself. I decided to watch a film, something I don't do very often. I had a look on Sky to see what was available and decided on Christopher Robin. Ewan McGregor stars as an adult Christopher Robin who is reunited with his old bear, Winnie the Pooh, and the animals in Hundred Acre Wood. I wasn't sure it was for me at the start and nearly turned it off but I'm glad I stuck with it as I actually found it quite charming. The perfect movie for a Sunday afternoon when you want to just sit and watch and not have to think too hard.

Have you been watching any of these? What else have you been watching this month?

  1. We loved Christopher Robin, great film. I have watched 3 from the crown and like you I am pacing myself to make them last. We have recorded but not watched war of the worlds.

    1. I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy Christopher Robin when the film started but I'm so glad I kept going with it, such a lovely story and I'm a sucker for Pooh and his friends.

  2. Like you, I watched 'Cold Call' and enjoyed it. 'War of the Worlds' will be given a second chance but if it still annoys me I shall ditch it, lol
How about 'Gold Digger?' I thought that was brilliant. You should be able to get it on catch up.

    1. I've recorded Gold Digger and started it twice but I can't seem to get going with it. I'm not sure if I'll give it another go or not.

  3. We do like sci fi and enjoyed the first episode of War of the Worlds. I've read some quite sniffy reviews about it written by critics - but I always think well it's just someone else's opinion.

    1. That's very true. If I enjoy something I don't care what anyone else thinks, I think most of these critics write what they think they ought to right rather than what they actually think anyway.

  4. They show a not-old woman, in this "Cold Call" still. Do not-old people fall for those things...????????

They constantly target older people. We let all calls go to Answering Thing. Any one with good intentions, will record. Of course, some with bad intentions, will too. But we only pay attention to those, we know of.

Our family and friends, record and we call them back. We know which are our medical offices, and their appointment reminder calls. Etc.

We do not pay attention to any other calls...!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope the film is done well, and it saves a lot of people, from being scammed, and worse.

I have Netflix again. Binge watched "Stranger Things." And nothing else. -grin-

    1. I used to work in a bank and believe me, all people fall for scams. The scammers are very clever and seem to be able to get so many people to part with their cash. I haven't watched Stranger Things but my Netflix subscription is worth the price for The Crown at the moment.

    1. I watched the first two series in record time but I know we'll be waiting ages for Series 4 so I'm trying to make this one last longer than the last two.

  7. I went to the cinema to see Christopher Robin and enjoyed it but preferred Goodbye Christopher Robin out of the two. I haven't watched Cold Call yet but will get in on catch up when I have chance. I started to watch The Crown but it didn't really grip me, i didn't like the way the Queen was portrayed as a weak person, when I think the opposite is true. I do have trouble watching any sort of history programme that is not the whole truth, I could never watch The Tudors for that reason either. Having said that I will probably carry on watching it if I'm stuck for something to watch any time. I haven't come across War of The Worlds so might look out for that.

    1. I shall have to look out for Goodbye Christopher Robin. I enjoyed Cold Call but it was very far fetched, worth watching in my opinion though. I'm surprised you wasn't gripped by The Crown, I usually just take programmes for what they are, it's not meant to be a documentary, it's a drama, so that's what they've done, dramatised the royal family. It does encourage me to find out the facts about the events that are shown though, I enjoy learning more about history.

    1. I really enjoy podcasts, I have some favourites which I follow and others which I dip in and out of. I haven't heard of Patient Zero, I shall have to look that one up.

  9. The transition to the new actors in The Crown has gone well hasn't it. It's such a well written show. I've given up on War of the Worlds too! So glad to hear your Dad is back home again.

    1. I think the new actors have taken on their roles well in The Crown, though it helps that it hasn't been on our screens for a while so there's been a gap. My dad is glad to be back in his own house again.

  10. So many good sounding programmes to watch, I have added them to my list. I have been watching Secret Life of the Zoo with my daughter this month, she loves programmes about animals and this seemed to tick the box for her.

  11. Christopher Robin was indeed charming, i saw it a while back and really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to starting season 3 of The Crown. I have to set aside some time to watch when I am not so tired and won't be interrupted. Have a wonderful week.

    1. Sometimes, the best films are those we have no expectations of. I'm just the same, I like to set myself all up when I'm watching The Crown so that I know I won't be interrupted and I can really enjoy it.

  12. I loved the first 2 seasons of the Crown, but haven't yet watched the 3rd, as I tend to like to binge watch, and often my 2 friends and I watch things like that during one of our girls weeks together. My hubby doesn't enjoy those types of movies at all so I rarely watch them here with him. But, I'm always disappointed when they change actors and actresses mid series, so was disappointed to see The Crown had done that. But, you're not the first to say the change worked; so have my fingers crossed on that. Haven't heard of Cold Call, but it doesn't sound like my cup of tea and I never watch science-fiction; just don't enjoy it, but found it interesting to see the picture you posted showed the lady who played Desmelda (sp) from Poldark. I really enjoyed her. No sure I have an opinion of Christophere Robin since I wasn't much into those childhood books, but sounds like it's worth checking out for the upcoming Girls Spring Week.

    1. Watching programmes together with girl friends must be fun. Mick doesn't watch things like The Crown either so I watch it on my own when I know I'm not going to get disturbed. I was a bit disappointed when I heard they were going to change the cast but I can see why they've needed to, so much time has passed in the programme so the characters are all getting older now and it has worked. I still enjoy Disney films even at my age, I don't think I've ever grown up really.

  13. The Crown seems very popular … but it's not something I have watched.

So pleased to read that your Dad is back home again.

    All the best Jan
