Stocking Up The Bookshelf

I often buy second hand books from charity shops but I'm noticing more and more places are accepting book donations and selling them for charity. There's a charity book stand in our local Tesco's and one in Wilko's too.

Our local chemist has recently set up a bookshelf for this exact purpose. The books are sold for 50p each and the money raised is donated to a local hospice.

Unfortunately, as yet, the shelves are not very well stocked so I popped back in to donate a couple of books which I've recently read. No books came home with me as there weren't any there which took my fancy, but I shall keep popping back in just in case something comes in which does.

  1. I am still trying to just get books from the library, 2 reasons, if we use ihe library, hopefully it will stay open, and good for the eviroment.

    1. I agree with this wholeheartedly and we should all be encouraged to use our libraries more otherwise we'll end up losing them.

  2. What a good idea. I don't have many books as I download to my Kindle. The books I do have are old and have sentimental value. My Complete Works of Shakespeare was a gift, a copy of a very old Grimm's Fairy Tales that was Mum's, a very old and tattered copy of Barnaby Rudge, also a gift. Best, Jane x

    1. I use my Kindle too but I love the feel of real books in my hands so I couldn't give them up altogether. My mum also had a lovely old copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales which she was given as a Christmas gift one year, I was hoping to have it after she died in March but we can't find it, I'm thinking that it must have got mislaid when my parents moved house a few years back.

  3. There's one in my local Tesco. You just have to leave a donation of any amount - I've seen some really good books there too!

    1. It's a great idea, passing on books when you've finished with them so that they can be read again, and charities benefit from it too.

  4. Lots of shops round here do that too, and it's amazing what you can find if you're in the right place at the right time. x

    1. I think that's the key thing, you have to be lucky and drop on something you want to read whilst it's there. I've managed to pick up a few books this way though, it's always worth looking.

  5. We used to donate our books to our local library as they had a book sale twice a year and used the money raised to fund events but they have stopped accepting book donations as have all our of local thrift stores. This sounds like a great idea.

    1. What a shame that places have stopped accepting book donations. I'd think that books would always be a good source of income for charity shops, so many people enjoy reading.

    1. I'm sure I will, I shall keep popping in and I'll enjoy browsing until something eventually turns up which I want to read.

  7. There's been one in my local Asda for quite a while, I always have a look when I'm in there though usually there's nothing I'd be interested in, but a couple of weeks ago I found one that's just my type of thing and it looks like new :)

    1. I think you have to keep looking, there's often nothing I fancy and then every so often I hit on something that's been on my list for quite a while. The good thing is that the books seem to change quite regularly.

  8. What a lovely new happening. People can get books at a good price, and charity gets money, and people have a place to take their read books.

We tried to cull our books, and use the library system. But his eyes are bad, so reading on his tablet, is the way he now reads. We are so happy for this!

I admit, I get some on my tablet too. But do love to hold a real book.

Plus, I try to turn off my screen, before near bed time. So I can have screen time, followed by reading a book, and do better by my getting to sleep. -smile-

    1. I'm the same, I read some books on by Kindle but I love holding a proper book too. The great thing about my Kindle is that I can read during the night if I can't sleep without having to turn the light on and disturb Mick. I think it's good to pass books on in this way though, as you say, everyone benefits.

  9. I haven't noticed any of these near me, I shall have to keep my eyes open as it sounds like a great idea. Hope you find a good book to read soon.

  10. I donate books frequently. I would rather do that than give a book to someone who really has not interest. I just got gifted 3 books i absolutely do not need, so I am going to give them to our little library in town.

    1. I always pass my books on too, it's very rare that I keep a book after I've read it, I'd rather someone else have the benefit of it who would enjoy it.

  11. Great idea. I haven't read that Alexander McCall Smith book but I always find them so relaxing.

    1. I enjoy The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency books, they're a nice relaxing read. I've only read one other Alexander McCall Smith book other than this series but I wasn't very keen on it, perhaps I just picked the wrong one.

  12. Sounds like such a good idea to recycle the books, unfortunately the postage costs prohibits getting books sent so have to rely on the tablet. Although there is something about actually holding a book whilst reading that transports me back to being a child with her nose always firmly glued inside a book. I always remember being asked one Guy Fawkes night, fireworks or a book, I chose the latter. xcx

    1. I often had books as a child instead of other things like Easter eggs, I've always been an avid reader. It's a shame it costs so much to get books sent over there, you should stock up when you come back over here.

    1. I think it's something which would do very well at the rescue. There's so many readers that we're always looking for books.

  14. Love that these book sales are popping up, we have one at our local Tesco too, although I donated, I haven't come across anything I want to read yet. I haven't read anything on my kindle for a while, my last book was from the library and I really enjoyed holding a book again, i think you take more in from reading a 'real' book than you do from a device.

    1. I've managed to find a few things from these book shelves in shops, it's a case of being lucky and dropping on something you want to read whilst it's there. I enjoy having a real book in my hands but I love my Kindle too, I like having both.

  15. I love when shops do that. We have a local diner in our small town and it does the same thing plus you can leave used magazines there, which others can then pick up for free. I love seeing books and magazines getting a lot of use instead of sitting on a shelf in someone's house.

  16. We have a few shops around that do this, but as you've found, sometimes there is not too many books available …
Charity shops seem to have quite a good selection and often from just .50p.

I do agree with the first comment on this post, we really should still use our local libraries as many have been under pressure and are closing …

    All the best Jan

    1. I don't keep many books I read so I always try to pass them on to places which will make a little out of them for charity and also so that someone else gets to read them too. I do agree that we should all use our libraries more though too.
