Eleanor's Grey Day Socks

I've used Erica Lueder's Hermione's Everyday Socks pattern before but I had a feeling the texture would show up better in a plain yarn so I decided I'd knit a pair in some Cascade Heritage yarn in the charcoal colourway. I was right, this time round the pattern shows up much better.

I quite fancied this pair of socks myself but Eleanor was home a couple of weeks ago as she was going to an Ed Sheeran concert, she saw me knitting them and, just as I thought, she quite fancied them too. They'll be making their way to Nottingham in some Happy Mail to cheer up any grey days Eleanor might have ahead of her, it's exam time after all. Mick's working in Nottingham on Monday so he'll drop the box of goodies off in person and if Eleanor's really lucky, he might even take her out for tea.

Whoever said that students have it hard?

  1. Lucky Eleanor! I really like that pattern, & once I'm better at sock knitting, I'd like to try a pair. Take care.

    1. I thought the pattern would look good on a plain yarn and it does, it shows up beautifully. I'm a big fan of Cascade Heritage Sock Yarn, it's so soft and squishy.

    1. I'm really pleased with them, I'm definitely going to knit a pair for myself now that Eleanor's claimed these. I think you're right, Eleanor can wrap Mick around her little finger so I'm sure they'll enjoy a trip out for tea.

  6. Gorgeous socks. I'm not sure I could manage a pattern just yet. I'm still trying to get to grips with knitting socks at all. I could really do with replacing the shrunken ones but my knitting time has been passed over for sorting the garden while the weather is good.
Eleanor must really look forward to her happy mail. X

    1. This is a great choice for when you feel ready to tackle a pattern, it's really very easy. We do have to make the most of the good weather, we never know how long it's going to last, and once the garden's done you'll be able to sit out there and enjoy it whilst you knit. Eleanor loves receiving her Happy Mail, I think I know her well enough to fill the box with lots of things she likes and enjoys, she's always very happy with the contents of the box.

  7. How wonderful for Eleanor, a surprise box and tea out sounds like a good life to me. I jest of course there is always a lot of pressure at this time of year, hope all goes well for her.

    1. Thank you. She seems to be quite calm about things at the moment, most unlike her as she's always been stressed about exams up to this point, but I think some Happy Mail won't go amiss.

  8. Those are lovely, Jo. They look so intricate, I really don't know how people knit, it's a whole mystery to me! I tried it when I was a child, but made such a mess of it, I decided knitting and I didn't make the best of friends!

    1. I learnt to knit before I can remember, I believe my mum and my grandma taught me, though my dad will have had a hand in teaching me too I would have thought as he can also knit. My grandma taught her sons to knit as well as her daughter.

  11. I'm sure Eleanor appreciated the socks and time with her Dad. I hope all is going well with her at uni especially as it's exam time. Our granddaughter is near the end of her college studies. She has her place at uni and accommodation settled. We shall miss her when she goes away.

    1. Eleanor's loving her time at uni, thank you for asking. This year has gone by so fast but she's settled really well and is enjoying her course and all the other things which go hand in hand with being at university. I wish your granddaughter all the very best.

  12. I'm not surprised that Eleanor fell for those socks Jo. I hope that her exams go well. Do her marks count towards her final degree? Maybe you will just have to cast on again :)

    1. The exams that Eleanor takes this year don't count towards her degree but she does have to pass them otherwise she can't take her second year. It does make it a little more relaxed for her though.

    2. wow- that is very unusual - every exam taken at university in NZ from year 1 counts towards the degree - you can still pass the coursework here, but if you do a "no-show" for the exam , you fail the entire course (paper). We do 8 courses (papers per year) - usually 4 a semester (2 semesters a year).

    3. Yes, you do have to show for the exam here too and you have to pass it to progress to Year 2, it's just the grades which don't count towards the actual degree.

    1. Eleanor likes plain colours, especially grey and green, so it's no surprise that she's taken a liking to these socks, I'm sure she'll be happy when she finds them in her Happy Mail. Thank you, we're keeping our fingers crossed that her exams go well, hard to believe that it's that time already, it doesn't seem two minutes since she was involved in all the fresher's activities during her first week.

    1. Thank you. Although I love patterned yarn, textured patterns show up much clearer on plain yarn so I'm becoming more of a fan of it. I love the Cascade Heritage yarn, it's reasonably priced and is so soft.

  19. fabulous socks! I'm already dreading my one 3 hour university exam on June 15... I still have 2 x 4000 essays to write before them and am at the stage where I just want to quite my fulltime job too - mentally stuffed from work every day, then have to come home and do 25 hours of study a week.... Good luck to Eleanor!
