Winter's Arrived

I was woken in the early hours of Saturday morning by the wind howling. It was actually snowing too, it had been forecast but I thought it might miss us. There was a thin covering but most of it had gone by morning, just bits left here and there.

We decided to visit a park in Bradford which we've been to before. I wanted to see the botanical gardens there at this time of year and you can read about our trip in my Lister Park Botanical Gardens In November post over on my other blog, The Good Life.

I'm glad I got wrapped up warm, though the sun was putting in an appearance it was bitterly cold. Such a shock to the system after the mild autumn we've had up to now.

I don't think anyone will have ventured out for a game of bowls this weekend.

I'm pleased to say that there's no sign of snow left now, although it looks very pretty when freshly laid, I'm not a fan. Temperatures are set to increase again as this week goes on so I hope that's the last we see of the white stuff for quite some time.

  1. We haven't 'had any snow yet but it's definitely turned colder so I wouldn't be surprised if we do get some. I've burst out the thermals today. It's going to be a long winter, methinks!!

    1. I'm surprised we've seen snow before you have. I know it's turned colder because I've got my vest on, I don't like this cold weather.

  2. It was a really cold weekend, wasn't it! The sharp wind just makes it worse. It's nice to get out and get some fresh air though. Have you been to Sheffield Botanical Gardens? xx

    1. It was. That wind was awful, truly biting and I hear it's to return. I haven't been to Sheffield Botanical Gardens but it's on my list of places to visit.

  3. I'm not a fan of snow either. We went to a wedding party on Saturday night in Derbyshire and the country pub' s car park was icy, it was scary to walk on especially with high heeled shoes! I don't think anyone managed to walk elegantly across it. I certainly didn't - I gripped my husband's arm and hung on to him until we got to the pub door. Very glad to hear we're going to have milder weather again later this week ! X

    1. I don't mind snow when I can watch it falling from the comfort of my warm home but I hate venturing out in it, especially when it turns icy like you found it on Saturday night, or once it's turned to muddy sludge. I think a white Christmas would be nice though.

  4. I'm not a fan neither. Its pretty from a distance but totally impractical especially as part of my roster involves working outside.

    1. I do feel sorry for people who have to work ourdoors once the weather changes for the worse. It must be lovely during the summer months but balancing that with winter, I wouldn't fancy it at all.

  5. It's been a bitterly cold few days but hopefully short-lived and getting warmer during the week. I'm not a fan of snow either. Flighty xx

    1. We really shouldn't complain, autumn hasn't been too bad at all so far and as you say, this cold spell should be short lived. Fingers crossed that it warms up again very soon.

    1. We've had our fair share of rain too, luckily not today though. Let's hope we both get some better weather again very soon.

  7. We had snow on Saturday, but fortunately it was too wet to settle. The temperature has really dropped though, as you say, bit of a shock to the system had to dig out the electric blanket and bed socks xx

    1. I've still got my summer 4.5 tog quilt on the bed and I've only recently succumbed to socks and boots, I've been in sandals until a couple of weeks ago. It's so cold though now, I'm waiting for it to warm up again.

    1. Me too. I don't like this cold weather one little bit. Roll on spring, though I think I've got a long wait.

  10. You got snow! Winter arrived in just a couple of hours with you then. Here it was cold on the shade but pleasant enough in the sun, as long as you had a coat on of course! I do like a crisp winter walk.

    1. It was a shock to the system, I can tell you. It's a bit warmer again today which I'm pleased about. I don't like the cold weather.

    1. We've had our first frost too, much later than usual. I managed to get all the tender plants in to the greenhouse over the weekend, just in time. It's warmed up a bit here today, thank goodness.

  12. I always think it's exciting to see the first snow fall ... especially when it's not near you LOL!
No, seriously I do like your photo's and always best to dress in plenty of layers in colder weather AND bring out the delicious soups!

    All the best Jan

    1. Ha ha, I agree. The one good thing about this cold weather is the comfort food it inspires you to make.

  13. I knew that snow had fallen in some parts up North, but fancy it going to the extremes from your so far mild autumn. Our weather has been quite chaotic with both hot and cold this month. Forecast for today 33 and very windy, with fire bans in place, then tomorrow is only going to be 17 and overcast with a chance of rain. Mad! We do need the rain, as it's been so dry this year here. Keep warm and take care.

    1. I know, it was a bit of a shock to the system but it has warmed up a bit today with warmer weather still forecast. I don't know what I'd do in your climate, it sounds like you need a summer and winter wardrobe at the moment.

  14. I'm loving all the pictures of snow everywhere. It's something like 60 degrees here this week...ridiculous! It's cold in the morning, though. If it snows even a little here, the entire city shuts down for days, so after the holidays I'm going to start filling our extra freezer with food for the winter!

    1. Our country doesn't cope with snow very well either, you'd think it was something out of the ordinary as we're never ready for it. I'm hoping that we don't see any more for a while now, it's not my favourite thing.

    1. That wind was bitter, wasn't it. Bradford does seem to come off quite bad when there's any bad weather around.
