My New Bedroom

It's not actually a new bedroom, we've lived in this house for over twenty one years now and this has always been my bedroom, it's my newly decorated bedroom.

I should have taken some before photos but I didn't think at the time, you'll just have to imagine it, lemon walls, blue carpet and blue soft furnishings. We have fitted furniture, which may not be trendy or fashionable, but it gives us lots of storage space which is something I love in such a small room so we decided to keep it. There's three double wardrobes, one with three drawers at the bottom, and a run of nine drawers underneath the window.

We had wallpaper on the walls before but as we decorate each room, we're having the walls plastered so that they can be painted rather than us having to hang paper each time. I've gone for ivory walls which gives the room a clean, bright, airy feel.

We've got a new bed. I've always had a divan in the past but I loved this natual oak bedframe as soon as I saw it. It was rather more expensive than a decent divan would have cost but my mum and dad bought it for us as a gift. We're very lucky.

When I first thought about the new bedlinen I wanted, I thought I'd go with a small flower design but I saw this bedding set and knew immediately that this is what I wanted. It's embroidered with pretty flowers and little bees and butterflies. So pretty.

I wanted a second set of bedlinen and though I was tempted to buy two sets the same, I decided on a change. This time I've gone for a floral design with a contrasting polka dot.

The room isn't completed yet, I'm still looking for a lightshade and I want a picture for the chimney breast and a shelf for the wall to the side of it, you can see how bare it looks at the moment.

I also want a picture for above my bed head, that's quite a large wall so it will need to take up quite a bit of space. I'm not in any rush though, it will all come together eventually.

  1. Very pretty bedding. I wish someone would buy me a headboard, we've been here 12 years and still no headboard.

    1. I'd chosen a very similar oak headboard before making the decision to get this bedframe. I love having the footboard as well as the headboard.

    1. I'm not usually a very good sleeper but I've been sleeping much better just lately. I'm not sure if it's coincidence, my new bed or the new surroundings which has had an effect. Perhaps all three.

  3. I love how you've decorated your 'new' bedroom. The bed linen - both sets - is gorgeus. We have an oak bed and I really love how it looks. Yours is great and such a lovely present to get.

    1. I'm thrilled with my new bed, I love it. I've always had divans in the past but wanted an oak bedframe, we're so lucky having such a wonderful gift.

  4. Isn't it fun to redecorate? Love your new bedlinen - both sets, but especially those pretty embroidered flowers. Sweet dreams!

    1. I hate the actual decorating, I leave that to Mick, though Eleanor enjoys it so she helps with the painting. I like choosing new things though, I fell in love with the embroidered bedlinen set as soon as I saw it, it's so pretty.

    1. The bedroom itself is on the small side, but we've made the best of it with plenty of storage space and I think the light colours do make it a calm and peaceful place.

  6. All that storage space, how wonderful to have it and hide everything away inside!
I like both sets of new bedlinen, the embroidery is very pretty and anything with polka dots gets my vote.
Good luck with the picture search, you'll know it when you see it.

    1. I'm a bit obsessive about storage space, I'd hate to live somewhere without any. Fitted bedroom furniture isn't all that fashionable these days but we've got it in each of the bedrooms. I think it helps to keep the house tidy, as you say, everything can be hidden away inside. I've no idea as yet what sort of picture I want but you're right, we'll know it when we see it.

  7. Lucky lady! I want to decorate my bedroom this year, so to see how nice yours looks is a real prod.
I love the bedding, especially the embroidered set. And I am positively green with complete envy because of HOW TIDY IT ALL IS.
And of course your bedroom is ALWAYS THIS TIDY, isn't it?

    1. I hate decorating, even though it's Mick who does it, so it's quite hard to get motivated and rooms tend to get left but it's brilliant once it's all done. The room is tidy because I'm only just getting round to putting things back in it. If you look at the first photos, there's nothing on the drawers or bedside table but in the last ones, I've got round to putting a few things back where they belong. We can hide clutter in all the storage space, though I'm going to polish my halo now as I tell you that I've been through all the cupboards and drawers and had a good clear out so even they're tidy at the moment. Don't worry, it won't last long before the clutter's back.

    1. I must admit, I'm loving going to bed at the moment. I'm getting a much better sleep too but I don't want to get up in the mornings.

  9. I love the bedding you've chosen, so pretty. Our bedroom walls are an ivory colour too, makes it feel light and bright, but not in a harsh way. I know what you mean about waiting for just the right picture xx

    1. You're right about the ivory. I wanted something bright and did consider white at one point but I think that could be quite harsh. The ivory goes so well with the furniture too. I've no idea what sort of picture I want at the moment but I do love looking in galleries so I'm sure the right one will present itself at some point.

  11. A lovely restful room, the bed linen is very pretty. I have some embroidered pillow cases but do not use them very often, I want them to last me out as my Granny did the stitching for her bottom drawer. I went from divan to brass bed a few years ago and love it, although it is fiddly to dust.

    1. I'm pleased with my bedlinen choices, I think each set gives the room a slightly different look. How wonderful to have your granny's pillowcases, they're something to be treasured and used for best. Your brass bed sounds lovely, though the dusting doesn't.

  12. It's lovely to give a room a make over isn't it. I repainted the bedroom over the Easter break pre virus and back trouble. I got new curtains and I am now on the hunt for bed linen. There's not a lot of wall space being a cottage there isn't much height but instead of one big picture I've gone for smaller one's around the room. Although now the Sorceress is finished I will have to have a rethink as to where she plus the other two will go but as I've not started the other two yet (managed to find the right colour & size evenweave at last) I don't think I need to worry about that just yet:-)

    1. I've been wanting my bedroom decorated for some time so it's great to finally have it done. I've always had curtains which matched the bedlinen before but this time I've gone for plain curtains so that I can change the look of the room without having to change the curtains too. I think smaller pictures dotted about look lovely in a cottage, I think you have to go with the style of property you're living in really. I'm looking forward to having a look around some galleries whilst I'm on my picture hunt.

  13. Your newly decorated bedroom looks lovely. I'm sure it's been a lot of hard work to do the makeover, but I'm sure you must be happy with the result and pleased with the kind gift of a new bed. You can now enjoy adding the finishing touches.

    1. It's the upheaval and the mess it creates around the house which gets to me when decorating. At least it's done now, I'm happy with how it's turned out so it was all worthwhile. Just the finishing touches to go and we'll be back to normal again.

    1. I love the embroidered bedlinen, I like the plainness mixed in with a bit of beautiful embroidery. I don't think I could do without storage space, it's the first thing I think about when I'm decorating a room.

    1. I think Mick's done a great job, helped by Eleanor. I tend to stay out of the way where decorating's concerned. I really love the embroidered bedlinen but I think the second set gives the room a different look so I like that too. It really was time to have a clear out, I couldn't even remember what was lurking at the back of the wardrobes so they're all sorted out and tidy again and the charity shop's done well out of it.

  17. Your bedroom is beautiful! I really like the built-in furniture. I think it looks very neat and tidy, and it makes life a lot easier when you have a smaller space to work with. The bedding is very pretty. I think the whole look is very fresh and clean. Enjoy your lovely new room!

    1. The fitted furniture certainly affords us more storage space, we wouldn't have half as much if the furniture was free standing as there wouldn't be room for it. I'm really pleased with how the room looks now, it's bright and airy and this is the look I was after when we started it.

  18. Lovely and fresh Jo. Looking forward to seeing what pictures you eventually get. We've had the same large one over our bed for many years and I still love it. (pretty pink peonies). Our internet was out, we think because of 2 blackouts over the weekend. Take care.
