I'm often lucky when I visit our local supermarket, I seem to arrive just at the right time when yellow stickered items are being put on the shelves.
We don't eat lots of salad so I only grow bits and bobs, so being back on my healthy eating regime, I decided I needed to fill up the salad drawer in the fridge.
I don't think I've ever got bargains quite as cheaply as these.
A continental side salad for a penny, a bag of sweet alfresco salad for 2p, an iceberg lettuce for 2p, a bunch of spring onions for 7p and two little gem lettuces which the yellow sticker has dropped off but they were either a penny or 2p.
That's not only healthy eating but healthy shopping too, my purse is very grateful.
That's economising for you isn't it. We are lucky that our local markets in Lincolnshire still do a lot by the bowl and plate and whatever they contain is £1. Yesterdays treat was two large punnets of red and green grapes £1. There was so many in each punnet I gave one punnet to a neighbour. I do so love a bargain or at the very least value for money. Think your 1p & 2p bargains beats mine though.ReplyDelete
I wish we had a local market, I suppose our nearest would be Leeds or Castleford, neither of which you could call local. I do enjoy nipping in to the market when I go to Leeds though, it's huge and you can get anything you want there. Sadly, many of the stalls stand empty now, a sign of the times.Delete
At those prices they might just as well have given them away! Flighty xxReplyDelete
That's very true. I don't know why food which is going out of date isn't donated to a food bank or a soup kitchen. Just because it may be past its best, it doesn't mean that it's inedible.Delete
Well Done!! it must have cost the supermarket more than 13p for all the yellow stickers!! xxReplyDelete
I know. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite so cheap before so I made the most of it while it was on offer.Delete
A lovely bargain Jo, I buy the ready mixed stir-fry packs if I ever see them reduced, normally about 10p & stick them in the freezer. They are fine cooked from frozen.ReplyDelete
You can get some great bargains if you hit on the supermarket at the right time. I remember Mick coming home with two packs of cubed organic beef once, they'd been reduced to just 28p per pack, I couldn't believe it. It was delicious too.Delete
Wow Jo! You did so well. I never find things like that, it must be because I tend to go early in the day before it gets too busy so they haven't reduced things. Definitely a bargain dinner or two there. xxReplyDelete
I'm quite lucky dropping on things like I do. It's all made some lovely salads for my lunch this week.Delete
I love getting a great deal at the super market!! Especially with the way that my kids eat!ReplyDelete
I'm interested in how you got the link up at the top of your page? The one where you click it and it takes you to another blog with a giveaway? Do you by chance have the information on how you did that? If you don't mind that is.
I hope you have kept well, I have been dealing with some things and have been away but I'm back :)
Do you have any awesome plans for this summer?
Lovely to hear from you. I'm not technically minded at all, but I managed to fathom it out so it must be easy to do. OK, I'll try to explain it and of course I don't mind, click on Design in the very top right hand corner, click on Layout on the left hand side, click on Add A Gadget on the right hand side, a pop up will come up so scroll down until you see Image and click on +. You'll then have the option to add a title, caption, link and image and then click on Save. That's all there is to it. You will need to save whatever image you want to use to your computer first. If you get stuck give me a shout and I'll try to help. Glad to hear your back with your blog, I'll be popping over to see you soon. We're going away for a couple of weeks in the summer to Cornwall again, I can't wait.Delete
Thank you very much, I'm going to have a go this weekend!Delete
I hope your weekend is wonderful!
PS... I MUST visit Cornwall!!! I have heard so much good stuff!!Delete
You're welcome. I hope I've explained it well enough but if not, give me a shout and I'll try again.Delete
You really must visit Cornwall, it's beautiful there, we love it.Delete
I always try to buy foods this way. Sometimes I get excellent deals on meat! If I'm going to put it in the freezer anyway, I see no reason not to buy the reduced packs when they have them.ReplyDelete
I think we have to do what we can these days to buy food a bit cheaper, it's so expensive. I often find reductions on meat too, it's a good way to stock the freezer up.Delete
Lucky and healthy... good combination!ReplyDelete
It's pure luck if you manage to drop on these bargains, but I have to say that I do quite well on the whole at finding yellow stickered bargains.Delete
Great bargains. I must try and find out just the right time to go in the supermarket down the road.ReplyDelete
Love from Mum
I think different supermarkets put out their reduced food at different times. Saying that, our local one doesn't seem to have a set time so it's just pure luck if you drop on bargain time.Delete
You did really well there Jo. I never seem to be in the right place at the right time for the bargains.ReplyDelete
That's a shame. It's the other way around with me, I'm quite lucky when it comes to finding yellow stickers. Perhaps that means that I'm in the supermarket too often.Delete
Wow, those are incredible bargains, Jo! Well done! :o)ReplyDelete
I think they just wanted rid of them, they must have done to reduce them so much.Delete
Great price for salad ingredients. We never see anything like that here.ReplyDelete
It's great to drop on some bargains, food is so expensive now, things seem to increase in price every week so it's a help if you can pick up some bargains now and then.Delete
what bargains.............things are never reduced like that in my local tescosReplyDelete
I've never seen anything reduced down to a penny before either, I hope they continue with it.Delete
That is crazy cheap! I have never seen things reduced to 1p, bargain.ReplyDelete
I haven't either, I couldn't believe it when I saw the prices.Delete
I work for a well known food retailer and back in the day we would always donate food to charities. Unfortunately some of the volunteers kept some of the food and would sell it to friends or family, denying the charity of it.
There is also the health and safety aspect as you can't guarantee the charity store the food safely, ie keep the cold chain constant.
Many ways were tried to donate to charity over the years, now it's made into compost and fuel, so at least it's not being piled into landfill
It's dispicable that people would do that, isn't it? You have to wonder what the world is coming to. You'd think that with more and more people unable to afford to feed their families, there'd be some way of getting the food to them without composting it, though what the answer is, I really don't know.Delete
What a haul! I must admit, I think that getting bargains like these is the way to go to save money. The only problem is that it isn't reliable and you have to shop more often, but that's not a problem if you live near to, or pass, a supermarket. I think the waste is horrid. Have you heard that Waitrose are going to be selling the non-beautiful/ imperfect fruit and veg in an attempt to cut waste?
I myself go to a veg wholesaler for all of mine - it is a quarter of what supermarkets charge, very fresh, and local wherever they can - really great stuff!

It's a shame we can't drop on bargains like these more often, but I have to admit that it's a bit of a thrill when I do. I hadn't heard about Waitrose, it's about time that one of the supermarkets made a stand, I just hope that the rest follow suit now. It sounds like you get a great deal on your veg, and all the better if it's local too. I'm looking forward to harvesting from my allotment again soon, it won't be long now.Delete
I am never lucky when I visit the supermarket! But, my mother in law is and she often brings us lots of bargains with similar yellow stickers. She often stands next to them when they put them all on and then puts the right into her trolley. :)ReplyDelete
I don't blame her, you have to be quick off the mark to get any bargains. I'm glad your mother in law thinks of you while she does her shopping, at least you're not completely missing out.Delete
