Wetherby

Mick took a half day holiday from work yesterday so we decided to make the most of the extra time we had together and go on our date day.

It's a while since we've been to Wetherby, a small market town about ten miles from where we live, so we decided we'd head there, have a mooch around the shops and call for something to eat.

The car park by the river was very busy but we eventually found a space.

A family of ducks were having a snooze at the water's edge.

The main roads through the town are always busy, though quite a few shops have closed down over the last couple of years which is sad.

There aren't many high street stores in Wetherby, I love all the little independent shops.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre, the streets are much quieter.

The cottages in this row are so pretty, tucked away in the back streets.

There are many different eateries in Wetherby offering a selection of different types of cuisine, so we were spoilt for choice.

In the end, we decided to have our lunch at the Wetherby Whaler, a Yorkshire chain of fish and chip restaurants. The take away shop is downstairs whilst the restaurant is above it.

Mick's not a huge lover of fish, in fact, I can't remember the last time he ate fish, but we both thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and didn't need anything else to eat for the rest of the day. Just as well really as I'm supposed to be trying to lose a few pounds before my holidays.

It was another lovely date which we both enjoyed.

  1. Looks like a great place to visit and you can't go wrong with fish and chips. It's a shame that there are some empty shops, I commented to KP only the other day how many shops now seemed to be empty in our once thriving town and they say we haven't seen the worst of it yet. I like e idea of your date days.

    1. I'm loving our dates. I've never been one for leaving the kids with babysitters so it's been a long time since we've had so much time to ourselves. It's a little sad in one way though, I do love our family time too yet it gets scarcer as they get older. I noticed quite a few shops to let, and there was one I noticed which has stood empty for quite some time.

  2. We havent been to Wetherby for years. It looks a lovely place, such nice shops and like you I much prefer independant ones than the big chains. How I would love some fish and chips from the Whaler!! I am going out tonight with the girls from work but have told them to watch that I behave myself!!

    1. I love Wetherby, some really lovely shops, especially down the side streets. The fish and chips were delicious, I really shouldn't have had them, but what the heck. Have a great night tonight.

  3. I look forward to our holidays in Wales, each little town has its own character and selection of shops, one of my favourites is Lampeter, maybe for the wonderful fabric shop.

    1. I think when you get to know a little town, you have your favourite shops there. I love the book shop in Wetherby, and the stationers too. There's some great little gift shops there as well.

  4. I'm not one for mooching round shops but the fish and chips would more than compensate! Flighty xx

    1. Poor Mick is long suffering when it comes to mooching round shops. He never moans though, he must love me.

    1. We did. Wetherby isn't a town we visit often, but I do like a few trips each year, it makes a change from large towns like Leeds.

  6. Jo, the photos are just lovely and even though I went to a wedding last time in UK, which was at a venue in Wetherby, not sure I've ever walked around the town. Must rectify that if we come again, but then I want to see so much I'm sure we'll never get it all in one holiday. How's your Dad coming along?

    1. I love Wetherby, there's some lovely little towns dotted around. I can imagine your list of places to visit growing and growing as you visit different blogs and different places are mentioned. Thank you for asking about my dad, he's got an appointment through, which, unfortunately, is while we're on holiday so I won't be here. Something else to stress about. Never mind, at least he's getting seen and isn't hanging around for seven months like he was last time.

    1. We had to really, didn't we? The fish and chips are delicious. I didn't realise until recently that the chain has taken over Harry Ramsden's in Guiseley.

    1. It is a lovely place. It's not somewhere we go often, usually two or three times a year, but I always enjoy spending time there.

  12. I'm glad you have managed to get out together, such a treat you needed after your very busy time recently.
Can't beat a good fish and chip meal I reckon!
Shame about the shops closing, sign of the times just about everywhere but nice that Wetherby has so many independent places.

    1. I like places with independent shops, you can find some real gems in them rather than something which everybody's got. I do enjoy fish and chips but I shouldn't eat them really, they're a treat.

  13. That looks like a really nice day out. I'm not sure I've ever been to Wetherby but we do have a Wetherby Whaler locally and it's a firm favourite for all of us. x

    1. There's quite a few Wetherby Whalers around Yorkshire now, apparently they've taken over Harry Ramsden's at Guiseley, I didn't know until recently. I enjoy my days out in Wetherby.
