Working 9 To 5 (Or 8 To 4)

I posted about Eleanor's Graduation ceremony, which was last Thursday. Well she had a job interview the following day and on Monday she got a phone call telling her that she's got the position she applied for.

Her degree is in biomedical science and ultimately, she wants to become a Biomedical Scientist, but she has to complete an Institute of Biomedical Science Certificate of Competence in order to apply for Health and Care Professions Council registration as a Biomedical Scientist. Her degree counts as her academic training but she also has to complete the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio in a laboratory which holds IBMS pre-registration training approval before she can become registered.

Eleanor (on the left) in the lab during her first year at uni.

The job she applied for is a Medical Laboratory Assistant in a haematology lab in Leeds and she will be able to complete her portfolio whilst working.

It's all happened so quickly. She hadn't seen a job advertised, she just sent some letters off on spec. Some hospitals answered saying that there were no positions vacant, some gave her some advice about where to look and this one called her on the Wednesday, telling her that they had this position vacant and asking her if she'd like to attend an interview the following day. Eleanor had to tell them that she would be unable to attend as it was her graduation so they invited her in on Friday instead. From receiving the phone call asking her to attend an interview to getting the job offer was just five days.

She hasn't got a start date as yet, she has to be DBS checked first, which shows details of any convictions or cautions held on police records. I believe that can take a few weeks.

We're all thrilled that she's managed to secure a job so quickly, it's so hard for young people today to find suitable work, especially something they really want to do and in an area which is convenient. Daniel didn't start work for about four or five months after he finished university, and even then he had to move south to obtain a suitable position.

Perhaps the Bank of Mum and Dad can finally close down, though I suppose that's just wishful thinking!

  1. Wonderful news, as you say, it's hard to get any job, but to secure the role she wanted is brilliant. As for the bank of mum and dad, start saving for new houses, weddings and grand children, because you will always want to help them.

  16. What a whirlwind week! I'm so glad that Eleanor was able to get a job quickly - it can be such a stressful time, not only finding suitable positions, but all the interviews & possible rejections that go with that.

    1. It was a bit of a whirlwind what with the graduation, the interview and then the job offer. I think it's really tough for young people these days, they study hard and then find it hard to get suitable work. We're so grateful that Eleanor isn't having to go through endless interviews.

  19. That's excellent news! It's good to hear that Eleanor has got a job that will help her progress in her chosen scientific career. Our granddaughter will be in her third year at university in September and so far she's worked so hard to pass her assignments and exams as well as doing jobs in between studies to help with finances. Her boyfriend, who she's known since high school days, has just graduated. The graduation ceremony was enjoyable, but now the applying for jobs in the engineering field begins and it's not easy. Once again, well done Eleanor!

  22. Congratulations Eleanor! My son will finish his degree at the end of the year - has been totally self funded by him, so he will come out debt free! He has worked 40 hour weeks sometimes with uni on top and earns more than me teaching at 30 years younger..... Lots don't even bother going to lectures (It/commerce/business) - they binge uni in 2-3 days a week watching the lectures on line!

    1. Thank you. Well done to your son for working so hard, it will be make a huge difference to him coming out without any debt. Eleanor worked part time in the student union bar whilst she was at uni, she wouldn't have had time for anything full time as science degrees mean lots of hours in labs etc. I remember Daniel having thirty plus hours scheduled in uni per week at a particular time whilst some of his flatmates had just five or six. I think it's a shame though that students miss lectures and catch up on line, they're missing the essential element of student life and after all, you only get out what you put in.
