A Rainbow Of Colours

Last week, I treated myself to a  Dinky Box from Lay Family Yarn.

These boxes contain five 10g mini skeins in an assortment of colours and are a great way to try out a dyer who you haven't bought from before or, as in my case, pick up a smaller quantity of yarn in different colours in order to add to my scrappy blanket.

I can't often tell how a colour will look knitted up when I see it in a skein but it's exciting to start knitting and seeing the pattern and colours emerge.

One thing which puts me off ordering mini skeins from many dyers is the postage cost. There's only 50g of yarn in small mini skein bundles yet they're often bunched together in a ball band, making them too big to send by letter post so the postage ends up costing the same as a parcel.

Just look how these mini skeins were sent. Genius! There was a large letter stamp on the box and they were sent as a letter. What's more, the packaging is recyclable, no plastic bags here.

A big thumbs up to Lay Family Yarn. It's little things like these which make for a great shopping experience. I'll definitely be back for more.

    1. I love little mini skeins, they're so cute and you can get a taster of the yarn which a particular dyer has on offer.

    1. I'm always more inclined to purchase something if the shipping costs are low, and it was lovely to see that the packaging was recyclable too.

  5. Its the postage that puts me off doing more shopping on line. We often make a list of our needs and do a big shop when we go to the mainland.

    1. I understand how postage costs have risen and companies having to pass those costs on but it's always refreshing when you see that a company have done their best to keep the costs as low as possible. I don't do all that much shopping online but it's lovely to get a little treat through the post every once in a while.

  6. Oh aren't they pretty!!!!!

Variegated colors, but soft colors. I'm sure what you use them for, will turn out beautifully. And very unique, as well...

  7. How thoughtful! I didn't know that you could buy such small quantities of yarn, that's really useful, thanks Jo. Please show us how they knit up. x

  10. I have to admit to coveting these myself, but have so far resisted as I have no current project to use them with. Kelly's yarn is beautiful and looks fabulous knitted up, I warn you that you could easily be tempted towards a full skein!

  11. I buy my yarns at the shop, but they don't stock independent yarns and as you say, the postage costs such a lot. Great idea the way they've sent as a letter. Best, Jane.

    1. I get tempted by things I see online which aren't available in a shop, it's just a shame that postage costs are so high now. I'm always grateful when companies look at ways they can make the costs as cheap as possible.

  14. They do look rather cute Jo. There's an independant wool shop in town that stocks sock WYS yarn. I saw 2 balls in a particular shade name that I wanted, took a photo with the item number on the band and they ordered them in for me. I payed the shop price without on-line postage. I think sometimes you just get lucky both in store and on-line. I look forward to seeing what you make, Cathy x

    1. That was great service. It's good if you can buy things locally but it's not so easy with hand dyed yarns, that's one of the things I love about yarn festivals, there's so much of it available all in one place.

  15. So pretty Jo & I'm with you on the cost of postage these days, especially parcels. Our postal service here in Oz is deplorable & expensive too. I'm also cutting back on plastic use, but it's so hard when shopping, as so many items are way overpackaged now. Have a good week, take care & huggles.

    1. I can't believe how much postage costs have risen. It goes by the size of the parcel now as well as the weight so small items can end up costing more to post than they're actually worth, it's madness.

  17. That packaging is wonderful & such gorgeous mini-skeins! I've never made a scrappy blanket - or scrappy anything else for that matter - but seeing so many lovely mini-skeins online makes me want to make a scrappy project, just to use some :)

    1. I know what you mean. I've got two scrappy blankets on the go at the moment but I've seen lots of people making scrappy socks and I'm itching to make some myself. These sort of projects are great for using up leftovers.

Well done the supplier on the packaging and keeping the postage low and recycle element too. The little box will be useful to keep and reuse if possible.

  20. oh, they all look so nice! And how lovely they've thought about the packaging in the way that they have, it's works both ways of course, it'll encourage people to buy and return for more, but how lovely it's not just chucked in a plastic postal bag.
